Together we've climbed hills and trees. Learned of love and abc's. Skinned our hearts and skinned our knees. Goodbye my friend it's hard to die When all the birds are singing in the sky. Now that the spring is in the air. Pretty girls are everywhere. Think of me and I'll be there. We had joy, we had fun. We had seasons in the sun. But the hills that we climbed Were just seasons out of time. Goodbye Papa, please pray for me. I was the black sheep of the family. You tried to teach me right from wrong. Too much wine and too much song. Wonder how I got along. Goodbye Papa it's hard to die When all the birds are singing in the sky. Now that the spring is in the air. Little children everywhere. When you see them. I'll be there. We had joy, we had fun. We had seasons in the sun. But the wine and the song. Like the seasons have all gone. Goodbye Michele, my little one. You gave me love and helped me find the sun. And every time that I was down You would always come around And get my feet back on the ground. Goodbye Michele it's hard to die When all the birds are singing in the sky. Now that spring is in the air. Look for flowers everywhere, I wish that we could both be there. We had joy, we had fun. We had seasons in the sun. But the stars we could reach Were just starfish on the beach All our lives we had fun. We had seasons in the sun But the hills that we climbed Were just seasons out of time. by Rod McKuen Agawam High School Agawam, Massachusetts Volume 49 Sachem 1976 TOGETHER WE'VE CLIMBED HILLS AND TREES SEE THE FLOWERS EVERYWHERE wv.v. v WE HAD FUN •- c YOU TRIED TO TEACH ME ntittiHtttttituiftiitiiiii Mlllllllllllimlll; RIGHT FROM WRONG at yoot CH . iskV MAHSA VA26USZ ADMINISTRATION Dr. Robert Gardner — Superintendent — gave cloclic ation and energy to the Agawam school system from 1971-1975. Donna Lapton, vice-president, was absent when picture was taken. Each year a new sophomore class is intro- duced to Agawam High School. The Class of 78 quickly became accustomed to its new sur- roundings, memorizing the new faces and corri- dors, testing the lunches and trying the patience of many an upperclassman and teacher. In adjusting to the AHS routine, the sophomores proceeded to elect officers, assigning a year's work and responsibility to Laurie Moirano, pres- ident; Donna Lapton, vice-president; Tina Gravel, secretary and Ann Barry, treasurer. The sophomore class initiated its three year fund-raising drive by collecting dues, and later padded its bankroll by assisting the juniors with the Monte Carlo Night. Heeding the suggestions of Miss Mary Wolochowicz, advisor, and her assistant, Mr. Richard Joseph, the Class of 78 wisely attempted to defend itself against the onslaught of expenses that will come forth dur- ing the next two years. Despite the bills and problems these years may bring, the sopho- mores may look ahead to the rewards of being upperclassmen and the enthusiasm and endless activities that this status entails. Following tradi- tion, the junior class assumed the responsibility of organizing and funding the Junior-Senior Prom in May, in addition to preparing for their long-awaited senior year. Under the leadership of Cindy Fedora, presi- dent; Phil Vecchiarelli, vice-president; Donna Cebrelli, secretary and Sue Sardella, treasurer, the junior class resisted financial set-backs by collecting dues, holding the school's first ping- pong tournament and conducting the second annual Monte Carlo Night. The efforts of Mr. Wayne Morse, advisor and his assistant, Mr. Joseph Fitzgerald helped the juniors to con- clude this busy year satisfactorily. The Class of 77 made an impressive show of vitality and spirit this year, proving themselves to be strong vocal competition for the seniors at the West Side Rally. If this unity and enthusiasm persists, the Class of 77 may anticipate a senior year not easily to be forgotten. Maturity, experience, and drive were all blended together in providing an exciting squad. Under second year head coach Roger Leclerc, the Brownies scored impressive victories over Wahconah and Tech, also a justified upset over Greenfield before pulling it all together against West Side. The entire Agawam school body, wanting des- perately to win back the rivalry trophy from West Side, stood behind the team with exhuberant spirit and pride and got what they wanted. Exce- Mike and Dave discuss previous play. Ilent teamwork and individual performances resulted in a stimulating 34-14 victory over West Side and provided the definite highpoint of the season. A new history of Agawam's dominance has just begun. Solid performances by captains Karl Ekstedt, Phil Jensen, and Skip Stuart helped to provide the nucleus for the much improved team. Other key senior lettermen included Mike Aequaro, Paul Byrne, Rich Gallerani, Steve Geiger, Chuck Gir- ard, Rich Gloster, Tom Guarnieri, Bill Marganti, Mark Poggi, Kevin Quick, Dave Stratos, Dave Trehey, and Brian Troie. Though they concluded the season with nine wins and eight losses, the net men played better than their record shows. Depth and consist- ency were the main elements backing the team's performance. Under the first year coaching of Jack Fahey and Mike Monterro, the varsity squad played with consistency and was a tough competitor for their opponents. The first win was over Greenfield with the lone score coming from junior Gary Nolin. The second triumph was an impressive come-from-behind rally in the final game against Greenfield. Goals from Steve Houlihan and Dennis Conway helped the team to round up the season on the winning side. To the delight of Coach Carol Capitani, the highlight of the season occurred when the Agawam girls handed Ludlow their only loss in league action. The 1976 season will be sparked with experience and high hopes when seniors Anita Fontaine, Celeste Gal- lucci, Cheryl Gardner, Martha May, Janice Reutt, and Cheryl St. Germain return in the spring. There were no limits to the squad as Cindy Berger and Karen Thomas, the only female run- ners, joined in the contests for the love of the sport. School records for the high jump and triple were bro- ken by Phil Losito, while a new pole vault record was set by Matt Mason. The strong underclassmen should provide an exceptional team this year. The team is one of the more recent additions to Agawam High School athletics and is as yet underdeveloped. Nevertheless the flippers maintained fairly high standards of achievement. With stiff upper lips and physical exertion they engaged themselves in contests with Western Mass, teams which were more highly qualified than their own. During the season they succeeded in performing on an elevated level of competition. Senior Tom Cassidy, a foremost AHS swimmer, as well as seniors Bob Gardner and Tom Robinson provided much of the team's power and incentive. However, the bulk of the thirteen underclass- men, will return in '77 with the benefit of experience. Indeed, the setbacks which they encountered this year may have heightened their proficiency, in which case the coming season will see dramatic improvements. Coach Smith announces the days work. The sophomores were the backbone of the team, but the experienced co-captains Cathy Andrews and Mic- helle Bussiere proved to be the major strength. The first eventful meet over Chicopee sparked the confident swimmers into four other enthusiastic wins. The muscle-men were able to use a newly purchased piece of equipment this season, the univer- sal set of weights. The 1976 successful season will undoubtedly start Agawam's dominance in the league. The team will suf- fer a great loss when six talented seniors end their high school basketball career: Judy Bozek, Laurie Clark, Les- lie Clark, Martha May, Robin Saliba, and Denise Tetreault. With competent, returning juniors Diane Mercadante, Mary McKinney and Peg LeClair, nothing but success should prevail in 1977. Of the senior players, catcher Steve Lasky proved to be the ace of anticipation for Skip Stuart's overpowering pitch- ing. Skip had an impressive 2.14 E.R.A. standing. Senior outfielder Mark Drouin also excelled, boasting an impressive .273 percentage in the spring of '75. With one of the highest batting averages, Mark should play an important role at the plate in '76. With Agawam's superior senior lineup. Coach Gerald Smith can expect another top-notch season in '76. BOYS' BASKETBALL The 1975-1976 Boys' Basketball Team encoun- tered serious difficulties early in the season and was soundly slapped by defeat, taking a poor 0-5 standing in independent play against leading Divi- sion I teams. However, once into 'Wheel' play the squad progressed without restraint and rolled to a 6-2 lead over three teams tied for second place. A big win over Minnechaug Regional was a major step in the team's march toward the champion- ships and the wait for the second Brownie-Falcon battle was accompanied by assurance. A disap- pointing loss to powerhouse Putnam, the only other top contestant for the trophy, proved to be only a temporary set-back, as Putnam itself suffered a defeat and restored the Brownies to first place. Spectators and players mutually enjoyed the tri- umphs of the 75-76 season, setting sights on the Western Mass, play-offs, which eventually led to the co-championship in the Valley Wheel! Propelling the hoopsters throughout this fabu- lous season were Coach Wayne Morse and aides Mr. Conte, Mr. Connelly, and Mr. Blodgett. Co-cap- tains this year were seniors Mark Winne, playing his third year on the varsity team, and second year member Karl Ekstedt. The performances of these two players, as well as those of senior Phil Losito and juniors Ralph Myers, Gary Buynicki and Rich Ackerman, certainly deserve acclamation. With the return of Coach Ralph Merullo and his assistant John Whalley, the squad was vastly improved, hut the victories seemed hard to come by. One of the biggest highlights of the season was a 2-2 tie with powerhouse Cathedral after the Agawam ice- men had been drubbed 17-2 in the first outing. Facing its fifth year in the more demanding Berry Division, the Brownies were expected to progress through the season with success. Senior co-captains Brian Keeley and Mark Faucette led the team not only in spirit but also in scoring ability. Special recognition is also given to seniors Kevin Cook, Paul Dahlke, Dan Denoncourt, Kevin Donovan, Bill Ferguson, Dave Kamyk, Glen Kutzenko, Chuck Marquis, John McNamera, Tim Morrissey, and Dave Trehey for their contributions. The 1976 senior lineup consisted of Tom Cirillo, Rick Curry, Steve Houlihan, Chris Meister, Mike Mutti, and Tom Sta- pleton. The rookie squad, composed of only seven girls, all under- classmen, was supervised by Coach Goldsman and Keith Lawrence. Each member competed on two pieces of equipment and co-captains Maureen Murray and Lisa Roy assisted their teammates in preparing smooth routines. Despite their limited number and training. Coach Goldsman anticipated a rewarding year for her gym- nasts. The girls participated in only five meets for their first season, but a heavier schedule may be expected next year. With the assurance that seven girls will be return- ing and the likelihood that the popular sport will attract new talent to the squad. FRESHMAN YEAR It's hard to believe we entered the hollowed halls of Agawam High four years ago. I can remember how nervous I was and how my stomach was in knots that first day. There were so many new faces and new places to see that my head was constantly moving from side to side to see and record as much as possible. Without that map on the first day I would have been completely lost. Everything fell into place quickly for our class, however. We began our school busi- ness by electing Marc Most president; Maria Preterotti vice president; Caroline Walsh secretary; and Paula Hardina treasurer. The year progressed smoothly as the officers began their duties of collecting dues and planning the year's projects under the direction of Mrs. Pricilla Andrews, class advisor. Just as the routine of every day school life fell into place, everything was suddenly interrupted. Agawam High School became an honored guest of Senator Ted Kennedy. The whole school sat in the gym overwhelmed with awe. The personal body guards and the press made us feel important to know we were a part of this excitement. Once Mr. Kennedy left we again returned to our everyday routine only to be interrupted again. In January we found that the rumors that the freshman class were being shipped out were true. We were being sent to the newly built Junior High where Mr. Paul Tatro was principal. Our class was being completely rejected by the Senior High. Not only had we not been able to attend rallies, but we were non-existant to the yearbook staff. I remember how resourceful our class was. In order to make amends for this rejection we passed quietly from the halls of A.H.S. and entered our own little world at the Junior High School. From this point on we were in complete power, no longer were we under the upperclassmen's rule. We proved to others, as well as to ourselves, that we had the integrity and stamina to do as much as the upperclassmen. We held our own rally for the freshman basketball team; we wrote our own newspaper and even put out our own yearbook. Considering all these trivial difficulties the first year revealed, the Class of 76 was on its way to a very powerful and successful future. TBE BATTLE OVER BUSING IN BOSTON: SOPHOMORE YEAR In the fall of 1973 we entered Agawam High for the second time. Faces and places were somewhat familiar, but there was still a feeling of anxiety as we were again the underclassmen. There were no freshmen for us to be superior to. Everywhere we went we were surrounded by upperclassmen. There was no way of escaping the fact that we were the babies of the school. The only consolation of being sophomores instead of freshman was that we now had the privilege of attending rallies, which seemed to be fixed by the seniors as they always won the class competitions. Business of the sophomore year began as we elected Marc Most, Caro- line Walsh, and Paula Hardina to their second year in office along with newcomers Patty Liddell as vice-president and Mr. Wayne Morse as class advisor. They were a hard-working and dedicated team of officers who first set forth their talents in their tasks by putting on a concert featuring Punk. I can remember Smoke on the Water being the one song the audience really got into. Our class also sponsored a bake sale that year which helped add to the financial standing of the class. The year progressed quietly but the excitement began to arise in May when it came time for us to order our class rings. There were many choices to pick from. It was hard to decide between the white gold and yellow gold and the numerous colored stones. But the final decision was made. From that point on, we knew we were well on our way to being upperclassmen. gasoline problem JUNIOR YEAR As our junior year rolled along we were finally able to walk the halls with a feeling of confidence. We were now upperclassmen and we flashed our rings to prove it. We showed our standing in the school by putting up a fight at the ral- lies. Even at the West Side rally we were filled with spirit and proved our- selves worthy of the prize for best decorations, but somehow the seniors won again. Not only did spirits fly high at the rally, but they flew the fol- lowing day at the game. It didn't help, however, as the West Side Terriers overpowered Agawam and sent us home with the first defeat between the two rivals in thirteen years. As we left that game all we could think of was how we would get them back the following year. In our third year of high school life we selected Laura Tomaszwski pres- ident; Maria Preterotti vice president; Caroline Walsh secretary, and Paula Hardina treasurer. These four officers had a busy schedule to fill. They were constantly holding meetings with Mrs. Hamilton, class advisor. First on the agenda for the building of the bank account was the bake sale at the annual Senior-Faculty football game. Other plans from the creative officers included a stationary sale in which half of the stationary ended up in Mrs. Hamilton's spare room. We never seemed to hear the end of that. One activity which did prove successful was the Monte Carlo night, held in conjunction with the sophomore class. Much planning and hard work went into that one night which turned out to be a fun and profitable event. Mr. T. lucked out that year and won the television set which was donated to the class to use as a prize. The junior class followed the tradition of previous years as they plan- ned and prepared for the Junior-Senior Prom. The prom committee selected Your Song as its theme and made May 2nd a night worth remembering for those in attendance. As it came to the end of the year and the graduation of 1975 we, as juniors, realized it was now our turn to assume the special status of being labeled Seniors. Feminists Get Both Victories And Defeats SENIOR YEAR Senior year, the one of endless activities, seemed to begin as soon as our junior year was over. Summer passed so fast it was almost as if we were having a couple of weeks off instead of the usual summer vacation. President Teresa Braica along with vice president Linda Simpson, secre- tary Caroline Walsh, and treasurer Paula Hardina, started collecting the final year of dues early in the year. For many it wasn't the final year for they hadn't even paid their dues from the three previous years! Paula acted quickly. There were endless announcements and threats of not receiving a free yearbook at the end of the year. She even posted the names of seniors who owed money and placed them in all home rooms. Out of embarrassment and for the sake of attending the Kid Party, which was held in December, many seniors finally paid their dues. Like magic we started winning the class competitions at the rallies. Even as a senior I couldn't figure out how all of a sudden we began winning. I wonder if it had anything to do with the senior cheerleaders being the judges? Although the seniors were unable to pull a victory at the Senior-Faculty football game, the varsity squad was able to keep their promise by defeat- ing West Springfield. The overwhelming defeat put pride back into the students of Agawam. The year seemed to be a decent year for the various teams. There may not have been many championships but the records definitely improved from the previous year. Everyone decided it was time to get involved and really put an all out effort into what they were doing. The ordering of caps and gowns made being seniors a reality. For eleven years we all anticipated our senior year, but it didn't hit us until it came time to be measured for our orange and brown gowns. Throughout our high school years we held to the general conformity of other classes, but in our senior year we changed our ways and became a unique class. Instead of waiting until mock graduation, we presented our school with the gift in January. Our finances enabled us to purchase and install a beautiful clock for the parking lot. This clock proved to be a real help to seniors returning from their Max Ed activities. We also changed the location of our Senior Banquet. It was much better having an atmosphere and a meal different from that of the Prom, and Valle's Steak House seemed like a good place. The fact that this affair at Valle's was almost completely paid by the senior class made it even more appealing. Encountering many trials, tribulations, successes, and failures, we, the Spirited Class of '76, have made it through our 12 years of school. The time has come for us to leave our status as seniors and become freshmen in the outside world. 66 LET'S HEAR IT FOR AMERICA.99 The senior class initiated 1976 with a strong start both financially and enthusiastically. The arrival of class shirts enhanced the feelings of class unity and strength. At the annual West Side Rally the seniors not only exhibited vocal harmony but also decorative talent. The Christmas season was highlighted with the Kid Party which instilled a great amount of joviality and merrymaking, as the seniors enjoyed their last chance to revive past childhood memories. The class gift was presented early during the school year, which enabled the privileged seniors to make use of the clock during Max-Ed time. Under the capable leadership of president, Teresa Braica; vice president, Linda Simpson; secretary, Caroline Walsh; treasurer, Paula Hardina; and advisor, Mrs. Evelyn Hamilton, the seniors definitely had a superior year. A great amount of recognition and gratefulness is attributed to these four seniors and advisor, for their time and effort during a hectic 76. A murdered friend, my dying heart, I wonder why a friend so close, to God I ask this question most. As I often wonder why, tears come frequently to my eyes, and now I think, I finally see, fearing death is fearing thee. O God, how beautiful it must be, to meet thee Lord finally. To meet my friends and all the rest. To meet Jeff, My Lord, and Everlasting Rest. Kurt Richard Fields Jeffrey McCarl 1957-1975 141 M2 SENIOR ACTIVITIES. . . Gregory Abbey, 226 Colemore St. F.H.
