Coach Smith s Brown- ies settled for a first place tie in the Valley Wheel. Although the team failed to get past the quarter-finals in the Western Mass, playoffs, there were some eye-opening moments. The highlight of the baseball season occurred when senior Tom Quinn pitched a no-hitter against Ludlow. Roland Denoncourt, Marty Davilli. and John Moccia, also seniors, provided solid pitching for the Brownies throughout the season. Senior out- fielders Doug Miller and John Knowlton, along with infielders Randy Economidy and Rick Mastroianni were also there to catch a bit of the action. Seniors Greg Forsman, Jeff Carmody. John Sapelli, John Conte, and John Fedora, along with junior hopefuls Skip Stuart, Dan Denoncourt, and Marc Drouin hope to make the 1975 squad after rigorous practice on the J. V. team. With the combined experience and talent of Coach Smith and his players, the Agawam Brownies have achieved the potential for an inspiring 75 season. Rill Slum' — Get it here! GOLF Despite a 8-9-1 record, the 1974 golf team had its share of individual talent. Agawam golfers who qualified for the Western Mass. Individual Championships included: Dave D’Amours, Jeff Orr, Lance Poirer and Paul Vanasse. In the coming 1975 season. Coach LeClerc will undoubtedly rely on the experienced abilities of seniors Jeff Orr, Cedric Pisegna, Paul Vanasse, and junior Chuck Marquis. The potential of new additions Matt Bickford. John Cirillo, Mark Consolini, RickConlin, Dave Kerr and Gary Kerr is expected to bolster the team’s ability to tee off in winning style. Senior Dave Kerr — a change of pace. 51 TRACK The AHS Track Team had a superb year. Although the team finished third in the Valley Wheel League with a 6-4 record, the members ran over their opponents at the Western Mass, meet as they took second place. The efforts of Joe Ramah captured first place in the Western Mass. Class A discus event with a new school record of 158 ft. and 2 in. With returning seniors Eric Brown, Ken Hedges, Matt Mason and Rich Snyder, Agawam is sure to remain in the running as a tough competitor. Young and Mason (L To R) hurdle the odds a leisurely moment after a grueling run 53 CROSS-COUNTRY The AHS Cross-country team suffered through a dismal season. Although under the capable leadership of captains Kevin Coughlin and Phil Losito and also under the fine coaching of Mr. Joe Haggarty, the team finished their season with 2 wins and 6 losses. Despite their record, the team entered the Valley Wheel Tournament. Here, Phil Losito placed fourth in a competitive and exausting run. Losing only one senior. Tom Bassett, next year's team will be led by experienced returning underclass- men Tom Colson. Kevin Coughlin. Tom Bassett. Coach Haggarty. 54 We re off to see the Wizard FIFLD HOCKEy High hopes and spirited players boosted the Field Hockey team to their first victories. Agawam’s hoc- kettes scurried by Minnechaug 2-1 and hammered Classical 4-0. Although the team was composed of virtually all green members, their exceptional defense and team work efforts resulted in four shut outs, the last of which occured in their last game. The team was led this year by first year coach Freda Brown. As coach she worked-out with the girls during practice and increased their stamina through hard conditioning. Assisting Coach Brown with their know-how were Coach Cardina and Coach Cook. Senior Varsity hockettes this year included Dori Chmielewski (co-captain goalie), Laurie O’Connor (co-captain). Jane Benerakis, Marie Dufault, Sue Oliver, Patty Sands, and Leslie Smith. With returning veterans leading the way, next year’s team should continue on the road to victory. Although the team had to be rebuilt after the loss of five graduate starters, the team’s success can be accredited to the fine coaching ability of Miss Car- ol Capintani. Exceptional double and triple plays were only a few of the many highlights of the sea- son. Only over-confidence led the team into a 4 game slump, producing a final record of 6-8. With their experience and all around know-how of the game, seniors Jane Benerakis, Debbie Fuller, Rhonda LaVallee, and Linda Pisano should successfully shut- out any possibility of an uneventful ’75 season. pre-game chaos 1974 Softball Team — FIRST ROW (L TO R): Brenda Devine. Cheryl! jane questions a play GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The 1974-75 Girl’s Basketball team had a good sea- son this year prompted by its highly skilled and well spirited players. Leading the team with an unlimited knowledge of basketball was first year coach, Carol Capitani. With Coach Capitani’s un- derstanding of the game, the varsity squad improv- ed over past teams with the best team in five years. Cindy Ecksteadt, the first coach the Girl’s Junior Varsity team has had, also did an impress- ive job this season. Varsity squad co-captains this year were seniors Jane Bencrakis and Marie Dufault. Rounding out the seniors on the squad were Dori Chmielewski, Leslie Smith, and Penny Webster. With head-coach Capitani and Coach Eckstedt, along with talented players, future Agawam Girl’s Bas- ketball teams should be hard to beat. Jane streaks in for another Agawam score. 57 Senior Tom Quinn shoots for a sure layup BASKETBALL Although the 1975 Basketball team had a slow start, rookie coach Wayne Morse did an excellent job of leading a talented but undersized squad. Morse com- pensated for this lack of size by turning to a fast break defense. Also, during this season, senior Tom Quinn headed for the 1.000 point of his high school career by maintaining a twenty point average per game. Seniors Jeff Carmody, John Conte, Greg Fuchs, John Knowlton, Wayne LaBranche and Tom Tatro also did their parts through good rebounding and defense tactics. Doug Miller and Pete Young, on the other hand, were forced to ride the bench because of injuries. Coach Morse was also able to rely upon the talents of un- derclassmen Karl Ekstedt, Ralph Myers, and Mark Winne whose potential is sure to be the strength in future seasons. Coach Dave Smith had hoped for a winning season, but injuries to key swimmers accounted for a slow start. The senior members on the team that distinguished themselves in the swim meets were Frank Ball, Eric Brown, Ray Carestia, Bill Gamelli, Dave Theodoro- wiczand Danny Williams. Returning underclassmen include Tom Cassidy, Bob Doucette, and Pete McLaugh- lin who hope for a winning season next year. GIRLS’ SWIM TEAM 1974 was the second year since the initiation of the Girl’s Swimming team on a varsity level. Coach Roger LeClerc’s descent from the professional ranks to Agawam’s helm, coupled with an outstanding freshman team from the previous fall, inflated the hopes of Agawam’s faithfuls. The outcome, however, is best described as a tre- mendous disappointment. When asked the reason for such a record, one player remarked, “What else can I say. There’s no pride on the team. We didn’t try hard enough. We just didn’t seem to give a (explicative deleated).” This disappointment is reflected not only in the team’s dismal 1-8-1 record, but also in its first loss to West Side in over a decade. The lone vic- tory resulted from a dramatic last minute one yard plunge by Dom Pisano in a 7-0 win over West- field. Senior quarterback Tom Quinn turned in what was probably the finest individual performance of the year in a 20-20 game against Tech. However, what most fans agree was the Brownies’ best showing of the year resulted in a loss. Despite the defensive efforts of middle guard Scott Brown and company, Agawam failed to hold off a late charge by a pow- erhouse Holyoke Team, losing 18-12. Apart from their less than mediocre record, the Brownies did receive solid performances from Sen- iors Brown, Capponcelli, Steve Darnell. John Fed- ora, Matt Mason, Doug Miller, and Quinn. Notable underclassmen contrabutions came from the Junior linebacking corps of Karl Ekstedt, Phil Jensen and Skip Stuart who also saw action in the offensive baekfield. Sophomore strength included Dan D’Alma, Myron Littlehale, Jeff Nelson, and Dom Pisano. Next year’s team is expected to be more promising with the maturation of the underclassmen and also with Coach LeClerc’s adjustment to the high school level of play. Among their list of activites were selling refreshments for the Senior-Faculty football game, a stationery sale, and Monte Carlo Night which was held in conjunction with the sophomore class. Class rings were delivered early in the year to the juniors who were impatiently waiting to of- ficially become upperclassmen. Under the leader- ship of president Laura Tomaszewski; vice presi- dent Maria Preterotti; secretary Caroline Walsh; and treasurer Paula Hardina, decorations for the West Side Rally were among the best exhibited this year. It was the first class of AHS to elect a girl as its President since the mid 1950’s. It was also the first class to graduate on the football field, rather than in the Coliseum. Unlike succeeding classes who attended the ninth grade in the new Junior High School, this was the last class to re- main in the High School building for grades nine through twelve. However, like many Senior classes before it. the class of 1975 seemed plagued by student apathy and the resulting financial difficulties. This problem healed itself as new and different activities were planned to encourage students to pay their dues and to take part in fund raising activities. These included a Sock Hop and a Senior Day at MacDonald’s when the profits for the day were donated to the class. Although the class of 1975 had many difficult mo- ments, the class successfully produced a standing equal to AHS tradition under the capable direction of Jane Benerakis, president; Carol DiClementi, vice president; Lorri Daudelin, treasurer; Gail Arsen- ault, secretary; and Mr. Richard Joseph, advisor. 97 Ford Expects Price Rise Relief by ’75 Freshman Year '72 was a year to remember. For a new step was taken. In that September. With schedule in hand and maps to find classes. Five minutes were Riven without any passes. Once settled down in a mass of stranRc faces. We soon became familiar with quite a few places. Smoke filled bathrooms and lunch line races. Were only a few- of those we soon knew. Yet. being a Freshman w as not all that bad. Officers Tourville. Arsenault. Brodcur, and Avrc. Kept very busy yet. were always there. The All-Star Review and Free Fare were new . But the Harlem Diplomats really were cool. As they whipped the AHS faculty, cheerful but blue The Winter Olympics were zany and fun. But the Rallies were puzzling; we never won! Sophomore Year '73 was a special year too. It was in this year that the Freshman knew two. Both the High School and the new Junior High were Their places of learning. Though there really was no difference In their academic yearning. Mastroianni. Osolinski. Brodeur, and Ayre. The officers this year. Just kept right on truckin' doing A job more than fair. In politics, the Viet Nam War had just ended. While Nixon — his troubles only impended. Kissenger just kept going full blast. We sat back and wondered. How long will he last?” With two years gone and two years to go. We tried to guess what the future would be As we looked back upon 1973. Junior Year '74 — We could never forget. Administration changed hands. With nothing upset. And though we weren’t free. Good-bye. Mr. Tatro, Hello, Mr. ’TV’ And at this same time, streaking was cool . Though not very often in this high school. The West Side Bicentennial was still another treat. With marchers and floats and a spirit hard to beat. Golda Meir of Israel soon resigned; Nixon and Watergate not too far behind Hank Aaron decided to break The Babe’s record. While our own coach Cliff Kibbe. semi-retired. Throughout this fast year how could we forget. In the coining and going of all that we knew. There was still Senior Year (it had not come yet). Senior Year '75 was the ycar.among many. We had known so much yet. Not really any Looking back and trying to remember. We could barely recall that first September. Wc were at last winning Rallies. We could hardly believe it The fun was just beginning. And wc would soon leave it. In this same year of the‘75 class. All were aware of 60c gas. Nixon resigned, severely degraded His successor, G. Ford was soon then instated. Rocky, his vice, to no surprise elated. Depression and recession were the country's main ills, Out of sight prices gave everyone the chills.
