Cheerleaders If not seen decorating the cafeteria or the gym, the A.H.S. cheerleaders can be heard after school practicing their crowd-pleasing cheers. The leaders of A.H.S. spirit began the year with a victorious soccer rally and game. One of the highlights this year was the West Side rally where our cheerleaders lost the rope pull, but cheered our team to victory the next day. Special thanks to Miss Hastings for her helpful guidance. 48 Cheers! Marilyn White Cheerleaders make a valiant effort in the annual Agawam-West Side tug-of-war. 49 VARSITY CHEERLEADERS: Joanne Leger. Leading the way was Captain Mike Simonds, a star performer, assisted by veteran junior John Doyle. A promising runner was freshman Hal Stuart, who was the team's second man. Rounding out the top seven runners were three newcomers, Ralph Morin, Louis Ramah, Frank Grabinski, and a fourth, Dave Harriman. Senior harriers were Mike Simonds, Peter Kinsley and Ron Fecowicz. The team was hampered by inexperience and injuries and finished with an overall record of 3-6. Our cross-country team placed thirteenth in the AA Division at the Western Mass Competition. With the nucleus of its runners returning next year, the team should be the best Agawam has had yet. Steve Cimma Football The Brownies, led by All-League selections Don Young, and Lou Conte and All-Western Mass choices Mike Drewnowski, Nick Longhi, and Dana Raymond brought Agawam football back to a respectable position. This was accomplished by establishing the first winning record in four years. The Brownies scored impressive victories over Greenfield, Tech, Westfield, Cathedral and West Side while losing only by a total of 22 points to Chicopee, Holyoke and Chicopee Comp. Throughout the season our players showed pride and teamwork as they fought each game to the closing seconds. The highlights of the year were Agawam's continued dominance over its rival Westside, with a 32-6 victory, and an outstanding effort against the league champion, Holyoke. Agawam gave the Knights their toughest battle in what was termed 'The Game of the Year . With seconds to go, the Brownies trailed by two points. Agawam will miss captains Mike Drewnowski, Bob Morin and Mike O'Brien and senior lettermen Lou Conte, Randy Cushing, Mark DiClementi, Nick Longhi, Mike Losito, Paul Murphy, Dave O'Malley, Dave Quintal, Dana Raymond, Gary Safford, Kevin Sullivan and Dave Tangredi. We aspire to success next year with returning standouts Ed Daudelin, Brad Hedges, George Hill, Tom Locke, Dave Michalak, Frank Santinello, Peter Shibley and Don Young. The Brownies look the part as they bring back the old tradition of victorious Agawam football teams. Nick Longhi crushes Tiger runner on the 40-yard line. Mr. Kibbe looks on triumphantly as Agawam gets a first down, and Mike Drewnowski loses his chance to snap the hike for a punt. Brownies Dana Raymond and Don Young firing-out to halt Tech offense. 54 Mike O’Brien romps toward paydirt against West Side as the referee points the way. Gary Safford barks signals to start drive deep in Agawam territory. Brownies defeated Tigers by a sizable margin. In Agawam, football means giving 100% effort or it's not football. When you play Brownie style Gary Safford heads for the sidelines after something has to give, usually it’s the opposition, but when it's a Brownie it hurts more just to watch. engineering a six-point drive. With second down and two inches, it doesn't take long for the Brownies Agawam goes straight up the middle. The Brownie ground game has always been hard to get a first down with ten fresh yards to eat up. hitting, as these West Side linemen are about to find out. 55 Soccer Agawam High's varsity soccer team added new experience and ability to the drive of past years as the squad tacked losses to the records of six of its toughest competitors. Forward linemen Jeff Leporati, Steve Zambelli, Steve Atwater, Don Wheeler and substitutes John Liptak, Ron Sipitkowski and Gary Webster proved to be quite potent. Steve Atwater stormed into second place in league scoring with seventeen goals and six assists. The valuable halfback line was led by returning starters John Cheslawski and Mike Presz, and included Glenn Tatro, Dave Boissonault, Tom Case, and Doug Favreau who were indispensible. Co-captains Tom Davilli and Wayne Gates assisted by Steve Monkiewicz and Steve Roberts used their efforts to stop the ball from reaching sharp goalie Doug Janik. Unfortunately, fine reserve goalie Walt Milewski received a knee injury and was lost for the season. Steve Atwater snaps off j powerful penalty shot as Jeff Leporati and the West Side defense look on. 1 70 Agawam High Varsity Soccer Squad Ron Sipitkowski warms up for duty on the left wing of the Brownie forward line. 56 Don Wheeler does some fancy ball-handling as Doug Favreau screens out an on-rushing half-back. [ Steve Zambelli smashes a quick shot on goal. left Leporati slams on the brakes after a fine cross-field pass. MM Coach Willard plans strategy as the team awaits the second half. John Cheslawski arches a shot over a West Side defender. Basketball The 1970-71 Agawam High basketball team, lead by senior tri-captains Ben Cheslawski, Lou Conte and Don Taddia, enjoyed another successful season. As defending Valley Wheel champions the team hoped to improve last year's 13-8 overall record and gain an outright berth in the Western Mass Tournament. As Coach Cliff Kibbe stressed, this year's squad had to use brains and speed to make up for its small size. Although the team was smaller than most of its opponents, rebounding and hustling defense were strong points. Leading scorer, guard Lou Conte, injured his ankle in the West Side game and was out of action indefinitely. Pete Shibley, John Cheslawski, and Tom Davies gained experience and confidence and the whole team became a more cohesive unit. Junior Steve Roberts was second to Conte in putting Agawam points on the board. Don Taddia also developed into a top scorer and assistant to Ben Cheslawski in rebounding. Bob Morin turned in excellent hustling performances under the boards, too. Sixth man, Tom Davies, could be called on to play well either as a forward, or in the backcourt. Peter Shibley and John Cheslawski shared a guard spot and displayed good ball handling and outside shooting. Chip Johnson, Ted Oliver and Jim and Carl Roberts are excellent prospects who will work next season with Steve Roberts and Pete Shibley to continue Agawam's winning basketball tradition. Prtc Shibley pulls up on a f4sĀ« break and pops for two points. Lou Conte Ben, Don, Bob, Tom, Lou and John ask, Where's the other team. Coach? Don Taddia pulls down a rebound as Steve Roberts stands attentive. Pete Shibley fires over Bob Morin's screen while Taddia works for a rebounding position under the boards. Don Taddia flips in an underhanded layup as West Side defenders helplessly look on. John Cheslawski drives for a layup, following the handwriting on the wall. Don Taddia tosses in a free throw at a crucial moment in the game. 60 IL'NIOR VARSITY TEAM Standing: |ohn Davies. Steve Skiba. Greg Fortier, Bob Toushette. Bob Liptak. Paul Henault. Coach Smith. Girls' Basketball This year Agawam presented its first girls' varsity basketball team. Leading the girls were Coach Hirschhaut and senior members Carol Rossi and Pearl Puskey. Other varsity members included Janet DalMolin, Laurine Greguoli, Rosalyn Wright, Susan Ghedi, Pat Parchick, Toni Veronesi, Holly Garvey, Nancy Knowlton, Lynn Dahlke and Karen Carruthers. To show no favoritism, the team rotated captains and starters. Although the team has not yet won a game, this has been a year to build hopeful and high-spirited players. The girls will continue to play in the Valley Wheel, the top league in Western Mass. Rosalyn Wright and Laurine Greguoli jump it up during practice. 62 The great ones, our first gjrls' basketball team. Paul Houlihan prepares to push off with help from a friend. Ski Team The 1969-70 ski team ended its season with an impres- sive 11-3 record. This gave the team, coached by Mr. Zabielski, third place in the Western Mass League. This year's veteran team had the pleasure of breaking in a new coach, Mr. Paige. As yet, returning seniors Paul Houlihan, Jim Flynn, Paul Berard, Dave Hare, and Craig Damon have established a fine record. Helping to retain high status are skiers Bob Meister, Greg Toczko, Bob Castellanos and Dan Caroleo. Agawam should rank high again this year with a powerful team. Mr. Paige, Craig Damon, Jim Marcus, Danny Caroleo, Bobby Meister, Greg Meister, Jim Flynn, Bob Castellanos, Paul Berard. 63 Hockey Much like the 1970 hockey team, Agawam's 1971 skaters had jumped off league-leading 5-0 record as they defended their title. Under the direction of their fine coach Ralph Merullo, and his assistant John Whalley, the Brownies were led on the ice by the sure hands of Captains Mike Drewnowski, Steve Kamyk, and Tony Barbato. Senior skaters Kevin Keeley, Mike O'Brien and Steve Atwater were assisted by Mark Sullivan and Mike Losito who i played in their final season. ' At mid-season the hockey team led the Wright Division as the result of a key 4-2 victory over a tough Westfield team. Trailing through most of the first two periods, the Brownies came roaring back when Tony Barbato completed his hat trick in the third stanza. The victory rocketed the Brownies to first place, a spot they hoped to maintain for the remainder of the season. Mark Sullivan Agawam and Westfield position themselves for a face-off in one of the few slow-moving moments of their crucial match. Baseball The end of the drought has come. The 1970 Agawam Baseball Brownies captured the Valley Wheel title after waiting nearly twenty years. Led by seniors Pete Ronchi, Rich Skowera, Bill Walsh, Bob Eldridge, Don Progulske, Andy Ouimet, Bill Vinesett, Ed Dahdah and Bob Leopardi, the team trailed Easthampton throughout the first half of the season. But the players went on to pursue and finally overtake the Eagles, winning the championship by defeating them 10-1 on the final day of the season. Credit is most certainly deserved by Coach Gerald Smith for his brilliant efforts to form a team of champions in his second year of coaching at the varsity level. A promising 1971 season awaits the baseball team, as they will be led by returning seniors Lou Conte, ]im Gibson, Tom Davies, Bill Rivers, Kevin Keeley, and Gary Safford. Also lending a hand will be Pete Shibley, Rick DeVall, Billy and Eddy Daudelin, and Walter Ugolick. Best of luck to Mr. Smith and his 1971 team as they defend their Valley Wheel title. Agawam should field a strong weight squad and the runners and field men are expected to show a marked improvement. Bright performances should come from Mike Simonds, Dan Sullivan, Lou Ramah, and Ralph Morin, while points in sprints should fall to Dave Tangredi, Dave LeGrand, and Bob Meister. The field events are accented by performers Bob Morin and Wayne Gates. The weight men, Nick Longhi, Dana Raymond and Kevin Sullivan, return from overwhelming last year's competitors. Tom Davilli will face competition in javelin throwing along with possible newcomer, Joe Pisano. Prospects are good for the new season as many underclassmen are expected to join the team. Golf The 1970 golf team, under the direction of Coach Roger LeClerc, battled to a successful season record of thirteen victories and six losses. The highlight of the season was a match at Crestview Country Club against the golf team from Brock Township High School of New Jersey. This year Agawam's golf team will travel to New Jersey for a rematch. Individual successes of last season include Bobby Brown's finishing in the top ten per cent of the State Tournament and Paul Osypuk getting an eagle on the tenth hole of the Western Mass Tourney. The 1971 team has several strong golfers returning and hopes to improve last year's record. Golfers returning from last year's squad are Paul Osypuk, Mike Stefanik and Sam Tarnauskas. They are joined by lettermen Dan Caroleo, Ed Tyburski, and Jay Collina. Careful aim, a slight tap and Mike Stefanik sends the ball off to the hole Sam Tarnauskas' fine putting makes the long shots look easy and the short ones certain. BROWNIE GOLF SQUAD; Sam Tarnauskas, Paul Osypuk, Jay Collina, Mike Stefanik, Coach LeClerc and Dan Caroleo. 75 Tennis The 1970 tennis team posted a 12-6 season record and earned second place in the tough Greater Springfield Area League. The team consisted entirely of underclassmen and wasn't invited to participate in the Western Mass Tourna- ment, despite its excellent record. Number one man Paul Houlihan, entered the singles tourney, however, and reached the semi-finals. Coach Zabielski expects 1971 to be a great year. Jim Houlihan, who was undefeated as Number One when he was a sophomore, has returned to lead the team. Experi- enced and improved seniors Paul Houlihan, Joe Russo, Tom Wyatt, Glenn Tatro and George Easter, along with juniors Steve Duplessis and Don Wheeler make up Agawam's strong delegation. The team feels it should make a good showing in the State Tournament this year. A snappy backhand shot by Glenn Tatro, and the ball is off to an George Easter demonstrates one of his valuable assets, Agawam sets for a day's action in competition, a powerful forehand return. 97 AGAWAM TENNIS SQUAD: Tom Wyatt, Stew Duplessis, Joe Russo. Paul Houlihan. Billy Scott, Glenn Tatro, George Easter, and Coach Joe Zabielski. Members of the tennis team head for a workout on the courts Girls' Tennis Last year girls' tennis was formed with the purpose of acquiring skills and playing the game socially. The girls, under the leadership of Mr. Aitobelli and officers Donna Morassi, Linda Fontaine, Lee Ann Hart, and Pat McCormick, planned a great season. This spring Mr. Aitobelli stressed playing doubles. Although the team was not competitive, they played schools in the surrounding areas. 77 Girls' Tennis, 1971 a time of INVOLVEMENT • • • Clubs and Organizations National Honor Society The Society's purpose is the intellectual development of its members. Tom Davies, president; Carol Cimma, vice-president; Debbie Wallace, secretary'; and Judy Malanson, treasurer organized committees to present speakers for assemblies, to tutor children at the Northeastern Educational Service and to plan field trips. This year, junior class students who qualified as National Honor Society members were installed at mid-year for greater participation in activities. All of these responsible Honor Society members were awarded with the privilege of complete freedom within the school building during their free periods. 80 Student Patrol Agawam High's police force, led by Ed Adamski worked to full capacity this year maintaining law and order. Traditionally, seniors and juniors make up the twenty-three regular members who faithfully patrol the cafeteria and corridors. A new addition provided for nine auxiliary patrol members to assist in cafeteria control and to substitute for absent student officers. Mr. Zavarella is accredited with the excellent supervision that has made the Student Patrol an effective regulatory body. As Schools Match Wits Tom Davies, Vicki Catchepaugh, Louise Spear, Greg Balsewicz and alternate Charlene Rawson composed one of the year's most successful and noteworthy teams. After defeating Easthampton, Chicopee, and Northampton High Schools by wide margins, the Whiz Kids qualified as finalists and later went on to compete in the championships. Mr. Fitzgerald, coach, and Mrs. Stratton and Mrs. Dugan, assistants, are commended for the many after- school practice sessions that made our team so triumphant. AGAWAM 275 EASTHAMPTON 60 Student Council The Student Council, perhaps the most important organization, has divided into two committees. The Student Government and the Student Activities Committee were formed for better organization and functioning. President Bob Morin, vice-president Susan Affleck, secretary Maureen Amaral, and treasurer Mike Ramah succeeded in acquiring a Student Appeal Board and sponsored the Winter Carnival. Council members also attended the Western Mass Association of Student Councils. Serving as a mediating body, the Student Council worked for the best relations between Agawam's students and faculty. Mirror Staff The job of keeping the school informed on matters ranging from student opinions to the latest cartoons was capably handled by the Mirror Staff. Activities included selling stationery, holding the Shout or Pout dance and morning doughnut sales. Editor-in-Chief, Carolyn Stefanik and advisor Mrs. McGovern saw to it that the eight issues a year were rolling out on time. 84 85 Personality Club Under the supervision of Mrs. Reed, the Personality Club had a productive year. Among the activities were an annual Sadie Hawkins dance and a food sale. Money raised from these events was awarded in scholarships to deserving seniors. President Carol Rossi, vice-president Sharon Suffriti, secretary Mary Morin, and treasurer Nancy Walsh were commended for directing this active organization which is so vital to the social functioning of Agawam High. 86 Environment Club The Environment Club under the supervision of Mr. Gage, was significant in informing the public of pollution circumstances. Activities included selling anti-pollution stickers and petitioning President Nixon to consider the dangerous results of the Supersonic Transport System. This Wipe-Out Pollution team headed by Calvin Phillips, president; Jeannie Kudlic, vice-president; Evelyn Pisegna, Secretary; and Debbie Ploof, treasurer; conducted a Spring Clean-up and a field trip to an atomic power plant. Drama Club The purpose of the Drama Club was to produce plays mainly for the enjoyment of its members. Mr. Plasse and his actors took advantage of the theatres in the area and worked on a series of one act plays. This group reincarnated the excitement of live theatre at AHS. 87 Ski Club a Day trips to Killington and Brodie Mountains and skiing on Wednesday nights at Mt. Tom were part of the Ski Club's activities. President Paul Houlihan, secretary Jeansie Wiley, and treasurers Donna Labun and Sharon Suffriti organized a five day trip to Canada during the February vacation. This was one of the year's main highlights experienced under the guidance of Mr. Joseph. V ā–  • -V X SH 88 89 French Club Guided by president Brenda Walker and advisor Mrs. Strasberg, the French Club provided its members with insight into the language and culture of France. Attendance at the Stage West production of Tartuffe and a Christmas party which included the recitation of The Night Before Christmas in French, were two highlights on the Club's busy agenda. Spanish Club In all their true beauty and mystique, the Spanish-speaking countries of the world are lain before the Spanish Club. Under the supervision of president Susan Gillan and advisor Miss Ida Moggio, the club obtained speakers, held meetings, and enjoyed its annual Christmas party which included the breaking of the pinata — all in an effort to introduce Spanish language and culture to its members. Future Nurses Club Dedicated and beautiful are the people of Agawam's Future Nurses Club. By arranging hospital tours and obtaining speakers, the FNC shows its members the responsibilities which the rewarding profession of nursing entails while instilling in them the qualities of charity and unselfishness. Chess Club Advancing and blocking kept the Chess Team on its pawns as active participants in the Western Mass and Connecticut Valley Chess Leagues. Mr. Stentaford was head check as president Calvin Phillips, vice-president Michael Huba and secretary Mary Loss put forth their best in daily practices and weekly games. Art Club Active is the word for the Art Club. Under the supervision of Miss Schilling the members made and sold Christmas trees, jewelry and vases. On their annual field trip to New York, the officers Cathy Mahoney, Marcia Reed, Celia Fontaine and Cindy Mathias planned to visit the Metropolitan museum, Lincoln Center and view the Broadway musical Applause . 93 Future Teachers Association The role of the Future Teachers Association is to encourage and guide its members in exploring the realms of modern teaching. Under its president, Maryann Klimaj, the group sponsored a coffee hour with the teachers and scheduled trips to various schools to observe different teaching methods. 94 Biology Club The high point of the year for the Biology Club was a trip to the Berkshires to observe foliage. Supervisor Mrs. Snyder and president Tom Gentile, vice-president Jon Reske, treasurer Margaret Avezzie, secretary Jo Ann Lavallee and activity committee chairman Robert Watson arranged to show films and sell Christmas candles. 95 Literary Club This year the Literary Club was involved in seeing different plays at Smith, Amherst, and small stage companies in the area including Stage West. The highlight of the year was attendance of the Shakespeare Festival in Stratford, Conn. Senior members include Sue Affleck, Paula McLeod, Brenda Walker, and Charlene Rawson. Library Staff Those essential to the successful functioning of the Library include senior members Liz Kana, April Royer, Diane Knowlton, Bill Donovan, Terry Hill and Nancy Cobleigh. Along with Freshman orientation, their activities included holding a Book Fair, a Valentine's Day party and their annual trip to a college library. Mrs. Holmes was the responsible and inspiring advisor. 96 Business Club Anyone who is seriously debating a career in the business world may find instruction in the Business Club. Through president Rosalie Placanico and advisor Mr. Altobelli, the club scheduled a trip to Western Mass. Electric where its members observed the processes of general clerical work. Math League This team competed with students from twenty-five area high schools in five competitions this year. The mathematically-minded members of the league were Don Taddia, Scott Skolnick, Annette Doyle, Carol Gillan and Sherry Horacek. The results of each competition were used to rank schools and students for the awarding of prizes. Try to remember the kind of September when grass was green and grain was yellow . . . Freshman Class — 1974 Despite all the problems that accompany adjustment in a new school, the freshman class managed to withstand the strain. Electing class officers was its initial effort to make roots. Elected were Nancy Prystupa, Walter Kane, Elizabeth Norman, and Denise Pepper. To establish a treasury, they sponsored a bake sale and scheduled a dance for the spring. The Class of '74 shows great promise, mainly because of its trememdous desire to belong. In September of 1967 the hallowed halls of AHS welcomed another bewildered group as the class of 1971 entered Agawam High. But the bewilderment faded as the expectations of the remaining four years brought us happiness and melancholy — peace and agitation. Under the guidance of the newly appointed principal, Mr. Raymond E. Harris, our freshman class proved itself capable of handling its new responsibilities. September elections appointed Lorraine Matthews, president; Kerstin Holve, vice-president; Binky Algar, treasurer; and Susan Affleck, secretary. The election of five representatives to the student council and the success of the Olde but Goode dance gave our class its first impressions of authority and progress. Our sophomore year with class officers Sheila Kida, president; Binky Algar, vice-president; Susan Affleck, treasurer; and Linda Higgins, secretary, was a year of change and innovation. The successful Satanic Majesty's Request dance featuring the Fifth Generation and Crimson Sky was the first dance, besides the Prom, ever to be held in the gym. The soccer team was born and nurtured under the direction of Mr. Walter Willard and during our sophomore year the first annual Winter Carnival was held. There were elements of change in the ordering of our class rings when we introduced the Dartmouth Indian head as the ring emblem. Jim Gibson had one of the leads in How to Succeed and we ended our year with a class trip to the Bushnell to view the production of Man of La Mancha . In our junior year we experienced continued success in class undertakings and a year of championships. Class officers Tom Davilli, president; Robert Morin, vice-president; Susan Affleck, treasurer; and Sheila Kida, secretary, reveled with us in the joy of receiving our class rings. We held our class dance, featuring Fat, in the gym and had more than one-thousand in attendance, which proved it a profitable event. Our greatest undertaking, the organization of the Junior-Senior Prom, was capably handled by chairman Binky Algar. The theme, MacArthur's Park, was expressed in the splendor and elegance that is the Prom. Sports victories were a part of our junior year and AHS stunned the area by gaining hockey, baseball and basketball championships. Government and personal involvement was part of the scene as Donna Morassi and Tom Davies were respectively chosen to go to Girl's and Boy's State and Jim Gibson had the leading role in Carousel . The vitality of our junior year was saddened by the announcement that Mr. Raymond E. Harris, after forty years of service, would retire. Senior class officers Tom Davilli, president; Robert Morin, vice-president; Susan Affleck, treasurer; and Sheila Kida, secretary, led the class through a year of nostalgic tradition and active involvement. Our opening activities included a Back-to-School concert featuring Flight and the receiving of class hats and shirts. We won the annual West Side Rally decorations competition and celebrated the Kid Party and Senior Banquet. On December 4 the Agawam High Chorus presented Sing Out Agawam with an original script written by Deb Grant who also had the lead opposite Jim Gibson. The production of Pajama Game saw Laurie Paton and Jim Gibson with the leading roles. After a three year absence from the sports scene, football experienced a return to success with an impressive season record. Sharing the sports spotlight was the innovation of a girls' basketball team. Our senior year represented the finale of the course of proceedings of the last three years. This last movement was swift and wonderful. Though we look to our future with anticipation we will reflect upon our past with fond memories of four satisfying years. The acting troupe went to Waltham and gave four presentations of Carousel highlights to music educators of Massachusetts. Once again, Mr. Davis is credited with directing a very successful play. 194 Pajama Game The 1971 production of Pajama Game starred Jim Gibson, Laura Paton, Kathy Jones, David Neill, Kirsten Holve, Nancy Andrews, Jackie Ryer, Beverly Orr, Tom Wyatt and Walter Hurd.
