2 At the end of this school year, we shall be going out to meet the challenges of today’s society. All of us have made some plans for the future whether we are going on to further our education at colleges or business schools, entering the service, or working at a job. In whatever we do, we have the experiences and influences of the past to guide us. Our high school years have been impor- tant building blocks toward success in the future. The scholastic, athletic, and social activities in which we have participated have contributed to the develop- ment and future success of each of us. The 1967 Sachem staff presents the highlights of our past years at Agawam High School which have been our key to the future . 3 5 Worker shortages in all categories—opportunities for post high school training— scholarship aid on acceptance to college—the Vietnam War—inflation—the new space age movement—civil rights problems—poverty programs—slum clearance, the plight of the cities—have all contributed to the education of the Class of 1967. These varied and unusual forces at work have made you mentally and morally tougher. I will predict that the Class of 1967 will make an outstanding contribution to the world society. CLQoO James Clark Superintendent of Schools 6 Your high school career was accomplished during an era of change, in subject matter, in the presentation and in the grouping of students to facilitate the latter. The trend was toward a modern outlook in all facets of education. Accordingly you deserve commendation for your attainment. Working with you has been a pleasant and rewarding experience and I wish you the success you richly deserve. Frederick T. Dacey Principal 7 MR. DAVID THEODOROWICZ MR. I recall being overwhelmed on that first day as scores of: nameless faces, seemingly confident of their destinations, rushed by me. Swept along by the crowd of people, I fumbled my way through the ominoui corridors. I was a typical freshman—bewildered and insecure. This sense of insecurity lessened with the election of our class officers: Sue Durant, Preadent; Paul Faits, Vice President; Tom Shaker, Treasurer; and Holly Gibson, Secretary. Under the guidance of Mrs. Mackler and Mr. Lyons, the class of 1967 became a reality. Our first real contribution to the school was the production of a Midsummer Night’s Dream in the Shakespearean festival celebrating the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare. I’ll never forget the audience’s laughter as we rewrote” Shakespeare, when the ovcrenthusiastic lion unveiled the actual gender of the . actress”. With Spring the fashion fads as well as the Beatles invaded Agawam High School. The collegiate look sported by the girls included the oxford button- down blouse, madras wrap-around skirts, and sandals. Hair styles for both boys and girls became longer and more casual, and the boys continued the casual look with cranberry shirts, tennis sweaters, corduroy levis and penny loafers. These fashions were all seen at the class party which was a vicarious trip to the Hawaiian Islands, highlighted by a luau. Coming around the corner to Room 3, I can almost hear the nervous stut- tering of a frightened sophomore delivering his first speech. As I approach the shadowed cafeteria, sounds of a class meeting come drifting through my 84 mind ... a meeting being conducted by Tom DeFilipi, President; Mark Rossi, Vice President; Tom Shaker, Treasurer; Holly Gibson, Secretary, and class advisors, Mrs. Mackler and Mrs. Halbourg. The topic of discussion was the class party, Downtown.” As I retrace my footsteps, I think about the mad rush to reach classes on time. Sophomore subjects seemed to be the most memorable because they were quite distinctive. Not only did we get the opportunity to use commercial math by operating the Student Store, but our geometric skills were used as we explored the crevices and angles of Room 40 on work detail.” We not only bisected angles nut also dissected frogs, analyzed amoebas, took nature hikes and were always observed by the rather emaciated Miss ?.” of Room 35. I’m sure everyone will remember having to read Abe Lincoln Grows Up as a sophomore. But for us the book came alive as Abe Lincoln haunted Room 26 with his footprints on the ceiling. Passing sophomore English seemed.like a milestone for I had finally become an upperclassman. Walking by the guidance office, I can visualize the familiar notices announc- ing the dates of the frightening college boards. How easily the superior atti- tude so characteristic of an upperclassman can be deflated by the awesome prospect of taking them. Any remaining sophistication felt by all juniors was lost that day that one of us was seen madly rushing to the janitor’s office, but slowed down by the desk which was caught on his finger. Clothing fads took hold of the juniors in the form of paisleys, wingtips, net stockings, pierced ears, and flowered suits. Style was also marked that year by a new type of class ring. The traditional Indian Head ring was changed to the oval college style. Junior officers Sue Brusseau, President; Holly Gibson, Vice President; Dolores Frasco, Secretary; and Jane Gallerani, Treasurer; were it instrumental in executing this change. Under the direction of Mrs. MacLeod, the first junior class function was the cabaret, Winter Wonderland.” With the coming of spring, recognition was given to three outstanding jun- contributed to the success of the evening. The culmination of school spirit in support of the football team was highlighted by a town-wide motorcade. However, athletics was not the only area in which seniors excelled. Two outstanding seniors—Bette Wright and David Wright—were chosen to repre- sent Agawam as DAR Good Citizen and Student Government Day Representa- tive respectively. The school's major publications were edited by two seniors: Ann Nunziato, the Mirror, and Janice Bryan, The Sachem. As the year progressed, we found ourselves involved in many functions. With the approach of December, plans were made for the annual Kid Part)',” with the help of class officers David Wright, President, Paul Faits, vice-president. Dolores Frasco, Secretary, David White, Treasurer, and advisor Miss Kolburg the party was a great success. The evening was highlighted by the appearance of Santa Claus along with a fashion show for the sandbox set’’ which featured the latest baby dresses, raggety-Ann costumes, and tyroleon outfits. Upon returning from Christmas vacation, we put aside these childish things i and once more became concerned with the current style trends such as frosted hair, tent dresses, mini-skirts, and trench coats. Attention was also directed to the daily rehearsals in preparation for Oklahoma” in which seniors Holly Gibson and Glen Tozcko had leading roles. In the category of dramatics, David Sweeney received the Best Actor Award for his performance in the senior one- act play The Man Followed By His Heart” which won first place in the annual inter-class competition. The spirit of competition continued as the seniors challenged the faculty to a basketball game. Cheered on by six seductive sirens,” the senior boys crushed the determined faculty. Our final social function was the class banquet held at Betty’s Town House. We all talked ecstatically yet somberly about the forthcoming graduation night. Envisioned in our minds was the solemn procession of blue and white gowns to be worn by the class of ’67 as we entered the coliseum to the march Pomp and Circumstance.” Looking back at the silhouetted school, I realize that tonight’s graduation will mark not the end but the beginning ... Proving pre-season predictions wrong, the Brownies clinched the AA championship title for the third consecutive year. Under the able leadership of co-captains, Bill Menard, Tom DcFilipi, A1 Mercadante, Bill Eggleston, and Dennis Dudley, the players displayed that sportsmanship and teamwork are an unbreakable combina- tion. Senior standouts who formed the nucleus of this year's team were Tom DcFilipi, Bill Eggleston, Mike Wil- son, Bill Menard, Mike DeForge, Dave Strole, Lew Chicklas, and Mike Rossi. The contribution made by seniors Tom Shaker, Dan MacPhail, Fran Scherpa, Gary Orr, Don Gravel, Jim Cresotti, Bob Manseau, John Higgins, and Charlie Santinello gave the support necessary for a victorious season. Included among this year's highlights was the Chicopee game in which the underdog Brownies rolled over the Pacers by a score of 26 to 0. The traditional Agawam-Westside game saw the Brownies once more cap- ture the Elks trophy with a lop-sided score of 36 to 0. The climax of the season was marked by the naming of 11 players to the AA Conference Team and 5 to the All-Western Mass. Team. The key to this season’s success was due to the unmatched coaching of Mr. Harry Eeonardi, Mr. Cliff Kibbe, Mr. Walter McCarthy, and Mr. Jim Bruno, which instilled a spirit of enthusiasm and a sincere desire to work toward a common goal. The encouraging support of the townspeople as well as the activities sponsored by the Grid-Iron Parents gave the team the added impetus to strive for perfection. 110 William Eggleston Daniel MacPhail Dennis Dudley John Higgens Robert Manscau 113 Baseball Under the direction of Coach Faucette the 1966 baseball squad compiled a 5-11 1 record. Of the eleven losses, six games were lost by one run or in extra inning games. Center fielder Bill Polopek was named to the All Western Mass, first team and Sam Provo was named to the All Valley Wheel first team. Veteran players for the 1967 season are Joe Corgan, Bill Menard, John Higgins, Rick Locke, Tom Shaker, and co-Captains Mike Wilson and Bill Eggleston. Throughout the hockey season, the team displayed extraordinary sportsmanship and courage. Most of the power, how- ever, centered around six super” seniors: Alex Stahovitch, high scorer; Lew Chicklas, strong defenseman; Roger St. Pierre, the team’s thoroughbred” Canadian forward; Dave White, energetic left defense; Jim Ramah, the team’s right wing; and Agawam’s agile goalie, Rich Tonelli. This senior power glided on the ice with a force that displayed not only skill but also a collective spirit. Reinforcing the seniors with much power and dexterity were juniors: Jay Amaral, Brian Rosso, Jim Chicklas, John Wylie, Paul Cimma and Vic Moreno. Returning next year along with the juniors are sophomores: Tom Branchini and Dennis Biagetti as well as freshmen Gill St. Pierre and Fred Paier. Without the expert coaching of Bob Fassnach and assistant coach Roger Haley, the 1966-67 season could not have been a successful one. Their guidance and dedication created a solid working unit and a grade A” team. Don’s proficiency is in the area of relay and sprinting. Record breaker Warren Roberts specializes in the high jump, long jump, and 880. Tom DeFilipi’s ability is displayed in his excellent performances in the 220 yard dash and relay events. People to look for in the weight events are Bill Carney and Dan MacPhail. Outstanding distance runners are Paul Faits and Dwayne Raynor. Joe Cimcroli, Kip Regnier, and D ve Wright can be found participating in the jumping events. Sprinter and middle distance runners are Vinny Zucco and Dennis Dudley, respectively. With this track team, Mr. Drabik is looking forward to an exciting season. Veteran runners, Paul Litchfield and Warren Roberts aided the team toward a satisfying season. Next fall coach Drabik will be relying on juniors, Ron Bouley, Kurt Rashi, Dwayne Raynor, Ken Whitman, and Gary Roberts. 128 Seniors 129 The 1966-67 Agawam High School basketball team enjoyed a successful season placing second in the Valley Wheel with an 8;4 record. The highlights of the season were the game with Enfield which Agawam won by a score of 47-46 and another squeaker with Ludlow in which the Brownies defeated the Lions 48:43. The season was climaxed by an invitation to seek a berth in the Western Massachusetts Basketball Tournament. Senior Dave Wright led the scoring with an average of 14.7; he was closely followed by Dan Maslanka who had a 14.3 average. Wright also led in the rebound department with 434, followed by Bill Eggleston with 210. Leading in assists was Maslanka with 75 and Paul Veronesi with 63. Field goal percentage leaders were Wright and Veroncsi. The successful season can be attributed to the fine coaching of Mr. Cliff Kibbe along with the spirited playing of the entire team, particularly seniors Mike Wilson and Steve Blackburn as well as underclassmen Jerry Pohner and Roy Wright. 130 Bill Eggleston Steve Blackburn Golf Agawam High's 1966 golf team had a successful season, winning 9 matches and losing 4.
