Agawam High School Agawam, Massachusetts 1965 We are caught in the dew covered web of movement It is we who must struggle our way free Into a clear bright day—into a dawn of wisdom and knowledge. Behind us are precious memories— Memories of joys and sorrows, laughter and tears, and memories of love and life withdrawn. As the Future swiftly speeds to Present and Present to Past, we must store these memories in the strongholds of our hearts. Lest time steal them from us. For Past is gone forever, merely a footstep in the desert of Time. But Future is kind, she offers us a chance to mold her—before she turns to Present. Shall we defy her kindness? MARILYN OLIVER Foreword Many elements combine to develop the student into an adult with the dimensions of knowledge, experi- ence, and aspiration. Movements in two forms, that of the individual and that of the school, are ever present in the way in which we think, act, and live our lives. The individual is alert to new and exciting ideas provided by the gaining of knowledge from the school. Through thought-provoking classes, extracurricular ac- tivities, and athletics, the school enhances the indi- vidual's movement toward future goals. Together, as we look back through the pages of time, we shall realize that our movement of today is but only a stepping-stone to our movement of tomorrow. Administra it 4 5 MR. JAMES CLARK Suporintendcnt of Schools The Class of 1965 has lived in a rapidly changing world. The last ten years have produced more scientific changes than or- dinarily occur in a lifetime. Soci- etal revolutions have erupted through racial, cultural, and ideo- logical clashes. Some teenagers have cracked as individuals and succumbed to mob psychology. I commend the Class of 1965 for its accomplish- ments in this unstable state, country, and wc cxsyyiM, d society. C si$L 6 MR. DAVID THEODOROWICZ Assistant Principal Graduates of 1965: It has been a pleasure and an enlightening experience to work with the Class of 1965. Your rec- ord in all areas has been out- standing. Also, you have always been very friendly and pleasant and intensely loyal to the school. Although it is necessary that you be of high quality to be ac- cepted in the various colleges and n business, I feel confident that you will be successful be- cause of your sincerity and ap- plication to your work. Please accept my sincere con- gratulations and wishes for suc- cess and happiness in the years ahead. MR. FREDERICK T. DACEY Principal MR. DAVID SKOINICK Guidance Director MR. ZUCCO 62 Class History It hardly seems possible that our four years at Agawam High School have passed and that we are, so they say, ready and able to face the world and undertake adult responsibility. Remember when we were freshmen? The seniors then seemed eight feet tall! That certainly was a spirited election that made Charles Guyotte, Marilyn Oliver, Kathy Meagher, and Patricia McMahon our class officers. Remember the class party that year—a Hawaiian luau. Ruth Harrington gave a hula demonstration, and Charlie, our president, showed unbelievers that he could twist. Then, suddenly, we were sophomores! Our class officers were Bob Swanson, Bobbie-Ann Wilson, Kathy Meagher, and Patricia McMahon. We were all hill-billies for our class party—Shazam! Many of our class members were involved in some way in Bye Bye Birdie, the annual musical production. At last we were upperclassmen. We ordered our class rings and then waited what seemed like an eternity for them to arrive. At our cabaret we held a Ren- dezvous in Dreamland. In May, the gym was transformed by able juniors into a Parisian boulevard with art exhibits, floral arrangements, and a sidewalk cafe. In June, with the help of our officers Bob Swanson, Bill Henry, Priscilla Colburn, and Ann Dezielle, we ordered our class hats, white sailor hats with our numerals, and we knew that soon we would be seniors. After summer vacation the juniors returned to enjoy the year that every high school student considers the best—the senior year. Only we had class hats; only we had class rings—and didn't we love that distinction! Our officers of the previous year had been re-elected. We also chose Ron Penna as president of the Student Council and Bill Turgeon as captain of the Student Patrol. Early in the year the seniors presented Cheaper by the Dozen, a warm family comedy. This play netted a sizeable gain for the Class of 1965, and this money, augmented by an intensive dues drive, would cover yearbook costs. Alexis Radewick, editor-in-chief of the 1965 Sachem, and the members of the yearbook staff worked diligently and intensely to meet deadline hours. We received the results of their long work when the yearbooks were distributed during the class banquet held at Shaker Farms Country Club. Remember the rallies? School spirit was shown as never before, and the spirit spurred the Brownie teams on to unparalleled success. All too soon, June eleventh came. We were the first class to graduate from the Coliseum in West Springfield. We received our diplomas and marched out to face the new responsibilities to be accepted and to see the new worlds which the|e diplomas had opened to us. 65 Candids CLASS CLOWN—Linda Lloyd, Laurene Kittler Bob Gui- detti, Richard Girard CLASS CITIZEN—Ann Dezielle, Linda Barufaldi, Robert Swanaon, Charles Guyotte. Aided by a great wave of school spirit and led by senior standouts Ron Penna, Bill Turgeon, Jim Silvestrini, and Len Patnode, the team played determined football through the season. In addition, seniors Paul Gazillo, Wayne Miller, Russ Weber, Bill Clouse, Joe Conte, Bill Desmond, Mike Natale, and Ed Nacewicz formed the nucleus of the team. Team determination was shown in the outstanding game of the year, the exciting effort against Holyoke. Trailing by a touch- down with only three minutes to play, the team started a thrilling sixty-yard march with fullback Ron Penna plunging the final yard for the score. Bill Turgeon then ran around left end for the game winning two point conversion; this gave the Agawam team the championship and the Agawam fans a happy ride home from Holyoke. The team then went on to beat arch-rival West Side 34-8 to round out the championship season. Through the undaunted coaching of Mr. Harry Leonardi, Mr. Cliff Kibbe, and Mr. Jim Bruno, the team displayed courage in challenging its opponents. Much credit is also due to the underclassmen whose time and effort contributed to the great success of the year and also added valuable experience for future games. Ron Penna Bill Turgeon Jim Silvestrini 123 Bill Turgeon Basketball Agawam's 1964-1965 basketball team com- piled an overall record of seven wins and thir- teen losses. High points of the season were the 69-62 win over Easthampton and the 88-54 win over arch-rival West Springfield. Senior varsity members Bill Turgeon and Bob Mosh- er, both backcourt men, contributed much to the team's effort. Co-captain Sam Provo led in the scoring with 375 points and a 19.7 aver- age; co-captain Bob Leger followed with a 13.2 average. Leading the rebounding parade were Dave Wright with 269 rebounds and Sam Provo with 177. Field goal percentage leaders were Bill Eg- gleston and John Connelly. Speedster Bill Po- lopek led in assists with 38, followed by Sam Provo with 33. Because of injuries suffered by upperclass- men and improvement shown by sophomore team members, the varsity line-up varied throughout the season. Dennis McGrevy, John Connelfy, Rick Progulske, and Dan Maslanka combined with the above-mentioned team- mates to round out the squad during the sea- son. The Brownies began at a slow pace, winning only one of their first eight games. After suffering their fifth straight loss, the team went on to win eight straight games. Under the capable leadership of captain Mike Natale, the players constantly displayed spirit and determination on the ice. Ed Nacewicz, Ron Provost, Jim Silvestrini, Larry Scherpa, and Rich Della Giustina, senior members of the team, showed tremendous perform- ances and played key roles in this season's effort. The award for the most outstanding senior on the hockey team was won by Russ Ramah. Several underclassmen also performed outstandingly. Fran Arnold, leading scorer in the Fay Division, and Dennis Hebert were elected co-captains of next year's team. Strong support from Alex Stahovich, Roger St. Pierre, and Rick Tonelli points to success in the future. 126 Ed Nacewicz Ross Ramah Ron Provost Richard Della Guistina Mike Natalc Jim Silvestrini Larry Scherpa Baseball Under the direction of Coach Joseph Faucette, the 1964 baseball team, missing highest honors by a single game, finished second in the Valley Wheel. Three members of the team, pitcher Bob Morin, catcher Ed Harashuk, and infielder Bob Barnes, were chosen for the Valley Wheel All-Star team. Because of the loss of twelve lettermen, Coach Faucette expects the 1965 season to be one of complete rebuilding. Senior pitchers Ron Pro- vost and David Dan, outfielders Bob Mosher, Ed Nacewicz, and Rus Ra- mah, and junior lettermen San Provo, team captain, Wayne Kerez, and Bill Polopek, form the nucleus of this year's club. The JV baseball team completed a fine season by winning nine games and losing three. 128 David Dean, Ron Provost Ed Nacewicz, Russ Ramah 129 Track Directed by Coach Henry Drabik, the Agawam High Schoo1 track team completed a successful 1964 spring season by estab- lishing a 7-4 record in Valley Wheel competition. Throughout the season, new records were established by Richard Girard in the pole vault, Allan Daigneau in the high and low hurdles, and David Williamson in the two-mile. Centering the team around senior co-captains Bill Brown, Rich Girard, and Steve Olivo, and other senior members Ron Penna, Bill Turgeon, Jim Theroux, Russ Weber, 'Victor Gonyea, Ron Quatrone, Paul Gazillo, and Paul Schmaelzle, Ciach Drabik is hop- ing for another strong season. They share work and play, joy and tears, victories and defeats. We hope we have recalled all of the moments that combine to form the years we call the best. As this last sheet of copy goes to press, we realize that this publication would not have been possible if it weren't for an understanding principal, a patient photographer, and thoughtful teachers who were lenient enough to excuse students to work on the yearbook when a deadline was approaching or when pictures were being taken. As the re-usable materials are put on the shelves and the mountains of mistakes are thrown away, we have an intuitive suspicion that the 1965 Sachem will be the finest an- nual published at Agawam High School. It must be, for we have enjoyed creating it. 1965 Sachem Staff Mr . Frances Libiaszewski, ADVISOR 160
