These are our Janus days. Of looking back to time when we were young, To time topful with growing up Its pain, its fear, its ecstasy; The learning How to wait, and how to go ahead, And how to live with dignity and truth; Sometimes we learned from teachers, books, and charts, Sometimes from living in a world of people: Friends, and foes, and those who do not care And these the vast majority; The footsteps Clicking down the hall, or strolling down the hall, or running; And the voices, Clear with shy, untested strength And knowledge cocksure in its newness, Til they fill the rooms with laughter, Courage, youth, ambition, Life. We look behind to times that flit like fireflies And fade to dusky memories, irrevocably dim. These are our Janus days. These are our Janus days. We look ahead a dream away to times That overflow with rights and freedoms and responsibilities, And empty years that, like some barren field, Await the sowing of new memories; To times that promise each his handful of quicksilver happiness. A few will cup it in their palm and keep it all, But each will have a chance to hold a shimmering drop or two. We look ahead to times that glow like galaxies, That promise us success and peace. These are our Janus days. 3 By ELIZABETH BURNS

Ideals arc like stars. Education is our sextant. The future is our ocean, wide and free and stretching out in all directions for years. Our ideals are the stars, high, shining, and everlast- ing. As the sailor sights the stars with his sextant and charts his course through his seas, we too aim all that we have learned toward our goals, our dreams, and our ideals; thus we brave the future. And this is our log of memories, promises, and dreams. It is difficult to catch a memory. Try to forget it, and it haunts you. Try to crystallize it in word or picture, and it fades to bland fact. It is difficult to telescope four years of living into a few pages . . . Is that success there off the starboard bow? Hoist anchor . . . let’s drift out along the tide and sec . . . 2
