JloJ. Ideals are like stars. You will not succeed in touching them with your hands; but, like the seafaring man, you choose them as your guides, and following them, you will reach your destiny. CARL SCHURZ SACHEM 1964 AGAWAM HIGH SCHOOL Agawam, Mas sachu setts I ’Vvv£c e I Ideals arc like stars. Education is our sextant. The future is our ocean, wide and free and stretching out in all directions for years. Our ideals are the stars, high, shining, and everlast- ing. As the sailor sights the stars with his sextant and charts his course through his seas, we too aim all that we have learned toward our goals, our dreams, and our ideals; thus we brave the future. And this is our log of memories, promises, and dreams. It is difficult to catch a memory. Try to forget it, and it haunts you. Try to crystallize it in word or picture, and it fades to bland fact. It is difficult to telescope four years of living into a few pages . . . Is that success there off the starboard bow? Hoist anchor . . . let’s drift out along the tide and sec . . . 2 These are our Janus days. Of looking back to time when we were young, To time topful with growing up Its pain, its fear, its ecstasy; The learning How to wait, and how to go ahead, And how to live with dignity and truth; Sometimes we learned from teachers, books, and charts, Sometimes from living in a world of people: Friends, and foes, and those who do not care And these the vast majority; The footsteps Clicking down the hall, or strolling down the hall, or running; And the voices, Clear with shy, untested strength And knowledge cocksure in its newness, Til they fill the rooms with laughter, Courage, youth, ambition, Life. We look behind to times that flit like fireflies And fade to dusky memories, irrevocably dim. These are our Janus days. These are our Janus days. We look ahead a dream away to times That overflow with rights and freedoms and responsibilities, And empty years that, like some barren field, Await the sowing of new memories; To times that promise each his handful of quicksilver happiness. A few will cup it in their palm and keep it all, But each will have a chance to hold a shimmering drop or two. We look ahead to times that glow like galaxies, That promise us success and peace. These are our Janus days. 3 By ELIZABETH BURNS Administration and The guiding hands That help us sight In all the far-flung nebulae of life Our special star, Our destiny. Administration We are proud of the Agawam Public Schools. Our reputation rides on the shoulders of each graduating class. The Class of 1962 has assumed respon- sibility and leadership in many areas to forward this tradition. We hope you are well prepared for future life endeavors. Your suggestions will always be welcome, and we stand ready to assist at any time when needed. Continue your pursuit of excellence to meet an urgent need of the home, industry, and the professions. 4 James Clark Superintendent of Schools It was a pleasure to have had a part in the high school education of the Class of 1962. Although my participation was limited, it presented an op- portunity for acquaintance with you members that I shall cherish for years to come. Collectively, your academic record was excellent, your accomplishments in the co-curricular activities outstanding, and your loyalty to the school un- questioned. Throughout your careers, you have been satisfied only with the best, and I am confident your lives will reflect the same high ideals. Congratulations and my most sincere wishes for continued success and hap- piness. 7 Frederick T. Dacey Principal To the Class of 1962: May you grow in friendliness as you have been friendly here, for the world needs this attribute more than any other. May your hopes be high, and may your aspirations be fulfilled; for the future of our world has no great promise if our youth aspire to that which is common and vulgar. May the enthusiasm and energy you showed here be undiminished in the years ahead, for the world needs an intense, alert people if mankind is to be preserved. It’s only a channel from the bay Out to the open sea. In Memoriam RONALD NEIL Youth is purity, The infinitesimal instant before the bubble bursts Exposing disillusionment and despair. To die in youth is to have preserved the wondrous bubble. Rainbows dance on its surface, Rainbows formed of kite-flying, small frogs, and childish miracles. Old mysteries are new; some puzzles have been solved. This is Childhood. But Youth is transition— Minus and plus, perhaps and maybe. The capture of Youth by Death is magnificent, For time and space stand still and Perpetual wonder endures forever. By ELIZABETH FERRY 16 Senior Class Officers FRANCIS E. CAPITANIO ELIZABETH A. After the usual period of adjustment, the years flew steadily by until we at last became the UPPERCLASSMEN. We enjoyed being uppermost in the school—until June 7, 1962, at last arrived and our high school days were over. Do you remember the wonderful years of . . . 958-59 We’ll never see another day like our first at AHS. We were really typical freshmen, lost and bewildered. Once settled, however, we elected Prank Buoniconti, Carol Tomassetti, Janice Pandolfi, and Roger Brown our class officers. Diane Moraczewski, Connie Harris, Kathy Pond, Gail Bitgood, Diane St. Jean, and Ginny Burton were chosen as cheerleaders for the Freshman basketball team. Our class party, the S.S. Agawam,” was carried out in a nautical theme and proved very successful under the supervision of our class advisor, Mr. Skolnick. 1959- 60 We couldn't be called Those Freshmen” any longer; we were sophomores. Our class officers were Roland Gaboury, Kathy Pond, Ann Mathicur, and Frank Buoniconti. Just before the opening of basketball season, Judy Schindler, Carolyn Bousquet, Diane Moraczewski, Carol Tomassetti, and Maureen Romanowski were voted Junior Varsity cheerleaders. Mr. Ashton became our new class advisor in time to supervise our class party, Soph-Beat ’62, which gave us all a chance to compete for the Best Beatnik prize (which was won by Liz Ferry). Our cafeteria took on a Greenwich Village atmosphere as we ate pizza and listened to poetry and bongo drums. 1960- 61 We were finally juniors—only two more years left. Mr. Ashton decided to remain with us as class advisor. Our class officers that year, elected by a new method, were Fran Capitanio, Kathy Pond, Jane Kusiak, and John Rachek. Although we had staged a battle for new class rings and had lost, we were still filled with pride when the tradi- tional rings arrived. On December 16, our Junior Cabaret, Starlight Fantasy,” which turned the cafeteria into a starry wonderland, was almost cancelled because of hazardous weather conditions. Jane Kusiak, Sandy Drzyzga, and Gail Bitgood won positions on the cheering squad, while Connie Harris and Maureen Romanowski served as alternates. A beautiful Roman temple surrounded by flower-filled gardens formed the background of our Junior- Senior Prom, Roman Twilight.” The chairmen and committee members who worked so diligently received due reward in the many praises that our prom received. While Sue Talmadge and Mickey Connelly, our Junior Mar- shals, led the graduating class through their final assembly, we proudly occupied the senior seats in the auditorium. 1961- 62 This was our year—we were seniors at last. Our first day as seniors, however, contained one flaw—the Brown Derby. Our first class meeting, conducted by our officers for the year, Fran Capitanio, Betsy Burns, Connie Har- ris, and Debbie Robinson, eliminated the derby and inaugurated the orange crew hat. At the second annual Foot- ball Queen Contest, Alice Davis was chosen to reign over the ’61 football season with her court consisting of Joanne Gobeille, Carol Tomassetti, Jeanne Rossi, and Janice Pandolfi. Though small in number, our football team thrilled the hearts of every football fan as they fought their way to the Western Massachusetts AA Conference Co- Championship. Ondy Warren, Dotti Montagna, Maureen Romanowski, Connie Harris, Sandy Drzyzga, Jane Kusiak, and Carol Parzych cheered our teams through very successful seasons. All those in the Senior Play gave an out- standing performance on December 8 when our class play, Romanoff and Juliet,” was presented under the direc- tion of Miss St. Jean. Carol Tomassetti and Alan Clark had been our representatives to Girls’ State and Boys’ State, and Fran Capitanio was chosen as our Good Government Day representative. Mike Corcoran was selected to deliver his speech about the Constitution at a district contest. Meanwhile, in the capable hands of Dotti Montagna (and under the supervision of Miss Marieb), our yearbook was taking shape as the various committees worked to fill the ’62 Sachem with wonderful, lasting memories. Moving into the beautiful new addition interrupted our usual routine, but we soon settled down to assume our proper dignity. On the night of December 22, however, all dignity was thrown to the winds at our Kid Party. The Second Battle of the Sexes showed the generosity of the girls in letting the boys win. Two announcements filled AHS with pride. Our band was chosen to represent Massachusetts in the Music Man Band Competition in Mason City, Iowa, and Betsy Burns and Niles Mortcnson became finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Contest. The year drew to a close as we signed class pictures, attended our class banquet, and loafed through our last days of classes. Before we knew it, June 7 had arrived, and the class of 1962 was graduated from Agawam High School. 49 Whimsical Picture me upon your knee — Pat N. O.K.. who’s the wise guy ? — Jack G. They also appeared at the Chicopee football game, the Gridiron Mother's Supper, the Firemen’s Ball, and the Federal Hill Club. Miss Eleanor Smith. Advisor. Until this year, honor students graduating from Agawam High School have been honored by membership in the Pro Merito Society, a state organization which was recently disbanded. The honor students of this year’s graduating class are members of the Agawam Chapter of the National Honor Society of Secondary Schools, a national organiza- tion established in 1921 to stimulate the scholarship, service, leadership, and character of secondary school students. The object of the Agawam Chapter as stated in its constitution is to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimu- late a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character in stu- dents of Agawam High School. Candidates for election to the chapter must have spent at least one semester in Agawam High School and be a mem- ber of the junior or senior class. They must have maintained an accumulative scholarship average of 85%, or its equivalent, in all major subjects. Members of the sophomore class may be chosen as probationary members at the end of the sophomore year if they have a cumulative average of 88% in all major subjects and if they satisfy the require- ments of scholarship, service, leadership, and character that are also placed on the junior and senior candidates. Members are elected to the Agawam Chapter by a chapter council, consisting of the principal and five members of the faculty, including the sponsor, who is chosen by the principal. Any member who fails to maintain the stan- dards is dropped from the chapter upon recommendation of the council. This action is taken semi-annually. Besides enjoying the honor and recognition of membership in the society, members of the Agawam Chapter re- ceive permanent library passes and official emblems. The setting was the old wild West; and the leading characters were Pamela Lockhart as Annie Oakley, a sharp-shooting cow- girl, and Dean Jcvons as Frank Butler, the handsome star of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. Other seniors who held supporting roles were Betsy Burns and Brian Asta-Fcrrero. 92 Band This has been a memorable year for the Agawam High School Band. Having been chosen to rep- resent Massachusetts in the National Music Man Marching Band Competition, the band will travel to Mason City, Iowa, in June to compete in the contest. Town and school respondend generously to the campaign launched to finance the trip. In addition to preparing for the Festival, the band has added musical delight to football games, as- semblies, parades, and concerts. Dance Band 93 Color Guard Kathy Pond. Diane Moraczewski, Judy Buoniconti, Carol Tomassetti, Sandie Ambrogi, Janet Imelio, Joann Bush, Jeanne Rossi, Dorothy Harper. Majorettes 94 SENIOR MEMBER: Ginny Burton. Golden, radiant, filled with strength— A youthful athlete is like a star, Surrounded and yet glowing uncommonly, Singularly, in a sky of similar stars. Football Posting a 7-1 record, the Agawam Brownies won the title of Western Massachusetts AA Conference Champions for the 1961 season. Although Agawam defeated the previously undefeated Westfield team in what was called the game of the year,” an unfortunate loss to West Springfield forced the Brownies to share the championship with the Westfield eleven. Agawam’s seven impressive victories were the result of many long hours of practice and conditioning guided by the skilled hands of Coach Leonardi. There were many outstanding players on the team, and their constant team work and good sportsmanship were important contributions to the success of the team. 96 97 Basketball Roger Brown and Doc Borgatti, co-cap- tains of the Basketball team, shared the joy of a successful season with senior team- mates Wally Osgood, and Mike Romanko. Among the underclassmen who helped to spark the team were Richard Leal, Bobby Morin, and Dave Alvigini. Coached and inspired by Mr. O’Connor, the team attained a league record of five wins and five losses. Diligent practice and good sportsmanship contributed to the team's ranking of third in the Valley Wheel League which is the highest position the Agawam team has attained in recent years. RONALD BORGATTI MICHAEL ROMANKO 98 OLIVER SEIBERT Hockey Although hockey as a competitive sport is relatively new at A.H.S., this year's team has contributed greatly to the permanence and enjoyment of the sport. Returning for his second year as hockey coach, Mr. Anastas conditioned the team for its fine season of seven wins, seven losses, and one tie. To meet the needs of a growing team, a rink was constructed to enable the players to practice in preparation for the inter-school games at the Coliseum. SANTO DEMICHELE JEFF REYNOLDS 99 ALEX BAKER Baseball RICHARD NACEAVICZ Besides reaping the benefits of fine coach- ing by Mr. Leonardi, this year’s baseball team was fortunate in retaining a strong working nucleus from last year’s team. The combination of the experience of the tried and the enthusiasm of the novice formed a team strong enough to rank high in the Valley Wheel League. 100 Golf Golf, a relatively new asset to our sports program, was very successful this year. The nucleus of the team was composed of ex- perienced golfers who played on last year's team. Although the field of competition is limited because not all high schools in the area have formed golf teams, Agawam has been in competition with five schools: Hol- yoke, Westfield, Longmeadow, Classical, and Cathedral. 101 MICHAEL ROMANKO CHARLES McCOBB Track CHRIS BEER OLIVER SEIBERT CLOVIS GOYETTE WAYNE CARROLL RICHARD VERMEIREN 102 ' Hovm- lcum 0 fidcrto+x-j - icn njumv Qo UAJt U) Ou AA -.
