PUBLIC LIBRARY, AGAWAM, MA 01001 011. AGAWAM HIGH SCHOOL ■Agau aM, MassacHusetts In Memoriam DONNA LEE GRAY “You cannot say, you must not say That she is dead. She is just away! With a cheery smile and a wave of the hand She has wandered into an unknown land And left us dreaming how very fair It needs must he, since she lingers there; So think of her faring on, as dear In the love of There as the love of Here, Think of her still as the same, and say She is not dead, she is just away.” JAMES WHITCOMB RILEY Iu Memoriam ANTHONY HARRY RICCO “Sometimes on pathways that we tread We think we see the end ahead But when we get there, instead— It’s just a bend in the road. And we do not grieve or worry when A loved one goes ahead; for then We know that we will meet again— Around the bend in the road.” CLASS POEM With eyes uplifted towards our shining goal. With raised heads and hearts enlightened still, Alone we now begin our glorious course Along the obscured, beckoning path of fame. Long years of toil and work are now behind. Engulfing in their midst a tear of waste, For error on our then unknowing part. But knowledge, with the aid of guiding hands, The sweetened fruit of time, has to our lips Been but a taste of learning’s sweeter gains. Past too are wholesome years of comradeship, Of gleeful bliss in happy, carefree days When youth unburdened by the pangs of age Lived free and bright with the future’s radiance. With knowledge gained from tasks of work and life, With mem’ries of our youth within our hearts, Before us now we mark our steady path To conquer worlds of time and light and space. By ALLAN MORGAN ADMINISTRATION “Congratulations to the Class of 1961 on the completion of senior high school. The pressures of college entrance, of preparation for business, and of preparation for hpme and family living have been increasing each year. You, as the Class of 1961. have faced these increasing changes in a positive manner. It is our hope that you have been equipped with an attitude towards work, a philosophy of life, and a standard of morals which will help and guide you. We have tried, as administrators and teachers, to stress the importance of liberal education to include appreciation of the academic, the arts, music, industrial arts, and physical education. Your dependence upon these areas of preparation will be more and more as the years go by. The Agawam Public School System will assist you through recommendations and counseling at any future time in your life where we can be helpful. Good luck to each of you. We look forward to seeing you at future reunions. JAMES CLARK Superintendent of Schools 6 “Association with the members of the Class of 1961 was a series of interesting but pleasant experiences. Your talents, both in curricular and co-curricular areas were many and varied. You were also friendly and cooperative and very loyal to the school. This is a good year in which to be graduated from high school because the oppor- tunities for advancement are limitless, and with your training you will not lack offers. I am confident that you will not be satisfied with mediocraty either in your work or in your lives and you have my best wishes for success and happiness in both.” 7 FREDERICK T. DACEY Principal MR. Place: A small Stone Age village called Agarock The numerous Stonemobiles and Pebblelets in the parking lot of the Sheraton- Rockwell Cave could mean only one thing; the National Order of the Knights of the Stone Age, better known as the Rock ’n’ Stone Rollers, were holding their annual convention. Inside, men in their best bearskin tuxedos and women in their latest leopard evening gowns from Paris and Milan had just finished a lovely dinner of bronto- saurus steak and were leisurely sipping their Royal Rock Cola. Everyone was look- ing forward to the star entertainment of the evening for the Grand Sorceress was going to perform her many miracles before the Knights of the Stone Age. At last the entertainment was about to start. A hush settled upon the group as the Grand Sorceress, addressing her magic boulder with secret anathema and imprecations, began to look into the future at the lives of the Class of 1961 A.D. “I see a group of confused young people who call themselves freshmen wander- ing through the long bewildering halls of a large brick education factory on a sunny September morning in 1957 A.D. Soon, however, the freshmen stop faltering and become firmly established enough to elect class officers: Thomas Biuso, Philip Gould, Patricia Ramah. and Pamela Montagna. The permanent advisor of the Class of 1961, Mr. Scvocurka, capably takes over his duties. Joanne Morassi, Joyce Boissonault. Gail Cavicchi, Donna Gray, Sally Dennett, Beverly Hawthorne, and Gloria Casiello are the freshman cheerleaders. The silvery moon and twinkling stars are transplanted from the March sky to the cafeteria when the freshmen have their class party. “Moonlight Serenade.” Determined not to let the year end with- out another social event, the freshmen hold their class picnic at Look Park. “The confused freshmen are a little less perplexed during their sophomore year. For their officers, they choose James Demichelle, Patricia Ramah, Barbara Wiles and Carol Lapine. Tired of the trite themes and titles used for most school socials, the sophomores chose a Japanese theme for their class party, “Azoma Adoria. Queen Gail Cavicchi and King David Taylor presided over their classmates for the evening. The Class of 1961 choose the Orange State Park as the site of their Sophomore Class picnic.” 51 The Spellbound audience murmured in amazement at the magic of the Great Sorceress. “Fantastic!” “Extraordinary!” Annoyed by the whispering of the group, the Grand Sorceress looked up from her magic boulder and fixed a mys- terious stare upon the assembly. Silence again reigned as if by some supernatural means. Slowly and little less eagerly, the Grand Sorceress continued her cryptic prognostication. “The junior year finds the Class of 1961 A.D. possessing both their class rings and a feeling of maturity. They re-elect James Demichellc and Patricia Ramah and elect Judy Schinelli and Roy Benjamin as class officers. Patricia Ramah and Sally Dennett make the varsity cheering squad as alternates and fill the heart of every junior with pride when they perform. The successful Junior Cabaret entitled “Sleigh Bell Serenade” has Paul Arnold as its general chairman and Thomas Biuso and Barbara Wiles as its king and queen. Then it is May 27 and the most glorious evening of the year — the night of the Junior Prom. For this year’s prom en- titled “Island of Dreams,” co-chairmen Thomas Biuso and Gail Cavicchi work hard to see that the large island in the middle of the gym floor is truly an island paradise. While several members of the Junior Class act as ushers at the prom and at graduation, Carol Lapine and Paul Arnold are given the honor of serving as Junior Marshals. With a picnic at Misquamicutt, the junior year comes to an end. “The group of students now wandering confusedly through the halls of A.H.S. with beanies on their heads are none other than the Class of 1961. No wonder they’re confused with College Boards, job-hunting, and pictures, pictures, and more pictures at Bosworths to look forward to. To lead them through the maze of senior activities, they elect Paul Arnold, Patricia Ramah, Pamela Montagna, Thomas Dion. Boy Benjamin, President of the Student Council, and Thomas Biuso, Captain of the Student Patrol, become the idols of many underclassmen. Serving as Editor of the Mirror, Patricia Ramah faces a busy schedule getting each issue out on time. Although the football team does not have an extraordinary year, halfback John Kane receives recognition from the Springfield Republican and television station WWLP for his outstanding performance on the gridiron. Judy Roy, Claudia Guidetti, Diane Driscoll, Sally Dennett, and Margaret Albano lend spirit to the team and the school as members of the varsity cheering squad. Suddenly a great change comes over the seniors. On the evening of December 23, the members of the Class of 1961 A.I). openly play such games as Farmer in the Dell, London Bridge, and jump rope and then sit on Santa’s knee. Norman Lapine serves as general chairman of the Senior Kid Party, and Stanley Peritz is Santa Claus. After a busy schedule which includes a banquet and a play, the Class of 1961 graduates.” Her prophecy completed, the Grand Sorceress shouted a witch’s formula, and suddenly she and her magic boulder disappeared. The amazed Knights of the Stone Age long remembered the Grand Sorceress’s story, and so will the Class of 1961. Committee members—Frances Kopcinski, chairman, Kathy Arnold, Barbara Ciak, Donna Davis, Dianne Mabb, Linda Marr, Pat Martin, Gaill McDonnell, Janet Pedulia, Christine Sullivan, Sandra Washington, and Pat Draghetti. PROPHECY Paul Arnold the president of the senior class of 1961 and his committee con- sisting of Gary Kane, Pamela Montagna, Joanne Morassi, and Arthur Hastings, tried to locate every member of the class to make a successful class reunion, and this is the result.
