Haiti r SS6 U4. 9 3 V The long awaited day has come For us to bid adieu To teachers, homework, and to fun And to our old friends, too. We've worked and strived and laughed and cried, And now it's hard to part From those on whom we've oft relied, And make our own new start. We will not fail as on we glide Into our bright new life. For Faith and Hope will be our guide To ease us through our strife. So now with high school days behind, The future will begin, This thought abides deep in each mind, Our aim: success; our hope: to win. Alice Arnold 5 Mr. Frederick T. Masure Carole Sulborski Elizabeth Guidi Donald Hastings Richard Coburn 31 SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS President: Anthony Saracino Secretary: Vice-President: Theresa Cardone Treasurer: Irene West Gerald Casiello We are relating this episode as it was told Police Department. to us by John Thursday, Agawam My name is John Thursday — I’m a public eye, ear, nose, and throat — I’ll do anything for a buck. My partner’s Sam Shovel. The bosses arc Captains Smith and Ward. We were working the 24 hour watch out of Problems Division when Mr. Trace, keener than most persons, called with a problem. A former school- teacher, a certain Mrs. Sears, had passed on to the big chalk blackboard in the sky. She had left a will, however, bequeathing a nominal sum of money to each of the graduates of Agawam High School, Class of “55”. Our job — find them! Dum dc dum dum dc It was a tough assignment. We were trying to decide where to look first, when there was a scream from downstairs in the women’s quarters of the jail. We sud- denly realized we had found our first heiress — it was Sara Jo Cameron — still giving Craig McEwan, the cop on River Road, a hard time. We looked her up in R. N. I. and found that she was in for husband beating. We then went downstairs, and Linda Knighton, jug mother, let us in. We crossed their names off the list and left. We walked outside, trying to figure the best means of transportation. We hailed the Aga-mart Taxi and discovered another graduate, Barbara Sigrist, who just puffed merrily away on her com cob pipe. She said, in her effeminate voice, “Where to, Bub?” We explained the situation, and she agreed to help out by driving us on our quest. We charged up Washington Ave. to the domicile of Ronald La Fleur, Esq. We rang the door bell and were met by his gracious wife, nee Marie Klenakis. We fulfilled our mission, and, ducking as we left, we managed to avoid being struck by flying saucers. Next, Sam and I went over to the Agawam Shopping Centre, narrowly missing Richard DiLullo, Trig professor, who was all wrapped up in his work — trying to keep up with his class. By this time, our stomachs were growling, so we stopped at McGuire’s Steak House, which was advertising Lynne Higgins as star attraction. David Howe, head waiter, took us to our table with outstretched palm (it probably would have been better than the food). At one of the tables was Johnny Beltrandi, president of the Lonely Hearts’ Club, and his new members, Betty Guidi, Shirley Perruse, and Bobby Mercadante. Passing on to the next table, we saw Chet Nicora, opulent and corpu- lent political boss of Agawam, lunching with Anita Rosso, Latin teacher at the high school. She was vigorously massaging her forehead and was overheard to say, “Do you get it?” At the next table we discovered another husband and wife combo — Louis Mercadante and the former Miss Marianne Fieker. Louie’s shirt was, quite naturally, open, displaying his hairy chest. 33 Having satisfied our hunger and fulfilled our obligations, we drifted to the Professional Building where we came across Al Girotti, architect, in the midst of a nutty problem. He explained that designing bathrooms for people with glass houses takes a lot out of you. Upstairs we found Ernie Dumond, painless dentist, drill in hand. He was practicing on his nurse, Theresa Sliech, because business was slow and Ernie wasn’t painless. Leaving the building, we discovered a busy factory manufacturing Davenport’s Davenports. Dick showed us a new model for people who are in love but don’t use Dial Soap. After we returned to the taxi, our driver began to complain about the gas situation. Stopping at the first station, which by chance belonged to Donald Decker, we were met by Chickie Arnold in her oil-stained mechanic’s coveralls. She was trying to climb up on the wing to put in the gas; we picked her up and asked, “Wha hoppen?” She explained that this was a new job for her — she had formerly been employed at Barnes Airport. We decided to leave the town, and on the outskirts we ran into Lee Ellershaw, president of the local Audubon Society, watching his birds. Nearby on the farm of Avon Perkins, we saw Joyce Minney and Margery Morton helping the high school F. F. A. in their rodent extermination campaign. Avon, a weed control expert, was busy with his trusty hoe. Suddenly a Rolls Roycc limousine stopped and three Cadillacs got out. One of these contained Donald Hastings, wealthy young man about town, and his uniformed chauffeur, Jane Masure. Jane was looking for the steering wheel, which she had accidentally misplaced. We then decided that the case would have to be solved by footwork, and we stopped in at Lou’s Shoe Store, where Cynthia Allen took our order for two pairs of flat-footed shoes. We asked Cynthia if she knew of any other local graduates in the area. She directed us to DiSanti’s Beauty Shop, where we were met by the owner, Barbara. While walking down the street, we passed by the window of Forbes Wallace and recognized the prostrate form of Larry Gallerani, who was testing mattresses. He yelled through the window, “Do you think I’ve put on any weight?” At that moment the voice of Jean Brezinski was heard to say, “Reduce with Reduco.” It seemed she was demonstrating her product on the street comer. We then departed for Presque Isle, Maine, where we hoped to meet Carolyn Fogg, lonely lighthouse keeper. A deer crossed the road in front of our car, followed closely by Tony Krzykowski, hunter, followed in turn by George Juke, game warden. After leaving them their money, we stopped at the local spinster’s home. It was most ably presided over by Corinne Roberts. We also saw Beverly Gifford, Vivian Hastings, and Barbara Borgatti, who seemed to have long faces. Our next trip was by slow freight to Europe. Even the taxi went with us; we had become attached to it. For three days we chased Martin Lehberger, who was touring Europe on his bicycle. We finally caught up with “Moon” in Liechtenstein. From there it was but a short jaunt to the World Chess Tournament and Chick Mitchell, who was playing first board. Roger Phaneuf was also in Europe working as personal surgeon to Ali Khan. We almost missed Roger, since he was hurrying to his weekly sewing class. Next on our quest was Hawaii, where we were met at the dock by Carole Sulborski, doing her Hula Hula Hop. Carole’s manager, Phyllis Blanchard, could be seen in the background, still scything straw for Carole’s skirt. From Hawaii we went to Hollywood and the movie studios. At Republic Pictures we saw Geary Hinshaw, professional cowboy, and his gallant steed, “Lulu- bcllc.” Geary was in the midst of saving Jim Crean from Martha Gottsche. On the next lot Beverly Benson, star of “The Wild One,” bumped into us with her motorcycle. The radio was on when we returned to the cab, and Louella Fagnani’s mellifluous tones floated out over the air of station WGAB. We then went down Wilshire Blvd. to Bounccy Bowne’s Ballet Studio, where we found the proprietress and Rosemary Kallipolites pirouetting the “Dying Swan.” Cecil B. Doolittle and his megaphone were busy criticizing the dancing. That finished our work in Hollywood. 34 We then raced to Bonneville Flats in Utah, where we watched Arlene Egbert, master stock-car racer, scrape a couple more fenders. Bill Howe, track mechanic and gum-snapping champion, was her assistant. Peter Hallack was there, also, sweeping up the pieces with an oversized broom. At Reno, Nevada, quite naturally, we found Phyllis Stone, who had just shed her sixth, and Joe Myers, who was waiting to catch her on the rebound. Continuing on our search we finally reached the limits of Texas. At the American Embassy we inquired for John Bumsted, diplomat without briefs. We were told that he was engaged in big game hunting — in other words, shooting the “bull.” While waiting for John, we turned on the T.V. set, hoping to sec the lady wrestlers. Instead, we interrupted Betty Behrens’ commercial. She was extolling the virtues of Betty Cookem’s cake with built in bicarbonate of soda. Then on our 12” screen loomed 24” Alice Hatpin and Audrey Letendre, who were defending their midget tag team title against Joanne Belville and Phyllis Misischia. Clarence Smarse was the henpecked referee. Nurse Beverly Marieb sat at ringside with her iodine. On our way to New York we came across a detour sign. Standing behind it was ------ Yes, you guessed it, the smiling proprietor of Curly Coburn's Crooked Car Lot, looking like the cat that swallowed the canary. He directed us to Bent Knife and Tarnished Fork, Tennessee, where we almost ran over thirteen young children, who were playing in the dirt. Come to find out, they were all Dora Papacini’s. She said, however, that this was not so spectacular as Avalon Safford's octuplets. Our last stop was New York City. Feeling like a piece of pizza, we stopped at Petruzzello’s Pizza Parlor. We were waited on by Juliette Martin and Rosemarie Giordano. Music was supplied by Moretti’s Mambo Mopes, with Joe Wollner solo- ing on the “UH’S.” As a baton, BifTy waved the pencil with which he was still filling out college applications. As we stepped out into the street, we were pulled into the alley by a shadowy figure, who turned out to be Joe Davio, chinchilla race bookie. Stopping at Sandra Tor p's Fashion School, we met Gail Tootill, Carol Arnold, and Carol Bailey, star models. At the Stork Club we saw Bob Parent, Bob WUmes, and Bob DeGeorge, the three Bob-Cats, who were singing waiters. Passing by Yankee Stadium, we heard a roar which told us that Dougie Nielson's great softball team was winning another game, sparked by Shirley White- head, Nancy Reynolds, Peggy Chechile, Dorothy Gregory, and Rosemary DiDonato. From here we returned to Agawam, and, waving goodby to Barbara, we turned in this report at the police station. Dum de dum dum Friends, in a moment the result of our case, but first a philosophical word from Mr. Roseman, our friendly chemistry teacher. “I)o you suffer from heartburn and excess stomach acidity? Try the neutralizing effect with Dr. Bromo’s sodium hydroxide capsule. One capsule puts your mind at case — and your stomach at your knees.” Now back to our story — This is John Thursday. To the members of the Class of “55” — How will you spend your 13 aC. Any resemblance to students and teachers, living or dead, is purely intentional. Cynthia Allen Elizabeth Bf.hrf.ns John Bumsted Albert Girotti Alice Arnold FRESHMAN CLASS OFFICERS President: James Bruno Secretary: Joy Montagna Vice-President: Sandra Miller Treasurer: Robert Broggi Carolyn: Alice: Carolyn: Alice: Carolyn: Alice: Carolyn: Carol: Carolyn: Jean: As I walked through the empty halls, memories of my four years at Agawam High came echoing back to me. As I entered Room 26, I saw Alice Harpin sitting at her old desk. “Penny for your thoughts, Alice.” “Hello, Carolyn. I’m afraid the memories that this room hold for me are invalu- able. I can remember the first class meeting. Mrs. Sherman officiated as our worthy class adviser. My, we felt proud that day — our first class meeting! Donnie Hastings was elected president, an office which he served capably and faithfully for three years. Albert Girotti was elected Vice-President; Audrey Letendre, Secre- tary; and Sonny Mcrcadantc, Treasurer.” “Yes, we certainly had a wonderful staff of officers to supervise our Freshman Party.” “We’ll never forget the wonderful time we had at the Spring Hop, our first endeavor toward bigger and better things.” “Oh, Alice, weren’t you a cheerleader that year?” “Yes, I was, along with Betty Guidi, Alice Arnold, Cynthia Allen, Betty Behrens, and Marianne Fiekcr; and we certainly had some wonderful times cheering our future champions on to victory. Oh, look, here comes Carol Bailey.” “Hi, Carol, how arc you? We’ve just been reminiscing about our first year at Agawam High.” “Yes, our first year was wonderful, but then came our Sophomore year and we were introduced to the company of Smith Ward, Inc. At the first meeting of the new year, we elected Donald Hastings, President; Avalon Safford, Vice-President; Alice Arnold, Secretary; and Craig McEwan, Treasurer. We didn’t have many activities our Sophomore year, but we did have another class party. The dance was all we had anticipated, and more. We used a Hawaiian theme and named it the Hula Hula Hop” “Perhaps we didn’t have much activity for the first two years, but by our Junior year things had really begun to buzz. Let’s find Jean Brczinski and see how much she remembers about our Junior year. “Hello. I have just been thinking about our Junior year. We certainly were busy Juniors. Our officers that year were Donald Hastings, President; Alice Harpin, Vice-President; Jane Masurc, Secretary; and Larry Gallerani, Treasurer. That was the year we ordered our class rings. Remember how new and shiny they were when we first got them? Our Cabaret, The Winter Fantasy, was under the capable direction of Alice Harpin. Jean Brczinski’s decorations helped to make the dance a howling success. This was also the year that we worked so hard to build up our treasury by making programs, selling confetti, and having a paper drive. In the spring, we ordered our class hats. They were orange with brown lettering. Next came the big chore of putting on our Junior prom — The Twilight Serenade. 37 Sandy: Carolyn: Carol: Sandy: Jean: Sandy: Carol: Jean: Alice: Jean: Carolyn: The whole class went all out to make it one of the most successful proms the school had ever had. The decorations were superb. I will always remember the way we transplanted the outside world inside. Hi, Sandy, we were just talking about our prom. I)o you remember hauling in the stones for our wall, and the cottage the boys made? Chester Nicora was the manipulator of the intricate blue- prints from which it was built. Too bad it fell down twice before they finally com- pleted it. The ultimate success of our project was greater than we had ever hoped for. The night of the prom the faculty chose Donald Hastings and Carolyn Fogg as Junior Marshalls. Members of the class acted as ushers at both the prom and graduation.” ‘ Our Senior year ushered in an entirely new slate of officers. They were Chester Nicora, President; Betty Guidi, Vice-President; Sara Jo Cameron, Secretary; and Albert Girotti, Treasurer. The first duty required of these officers was passing out Senior hats. It was during our Senior year that a number of deserving Seniors won their Pro Merito awards. Carolyn, do you remember that we finally had a group of our girls chosen to cheer our boys on to victory? If I remember correctly, they were Cynthia Allen, Alice Arnold, Beverly Benson, Patty Bownc, Betty Guidi, and Lynne Higgins. Now that you have me wound up, will you ever forget our Kid Party? It was my first opportunity to manage a class affair. My committees were a big help to me in putting on this class function. Alice Harpin was the chairman of gifts; Carmella Petruzcllo, refreshments; Jean Brezinski, decorations; and Carole Sulborski, invitations. Larry Gallcrani played the part of jolly old St. Nick, and Chester Nicora was the able master of ceremonies. That was one evening when the distinguished Seniors hit a new low!!” “Yes, but since this was our last class party for Seniors exclusively, it will live forever in our memories. After this rollicking affair, we had to settle down to the serious task of choosing class colors, a class motto, and a class song. We voted Gold and White as our class colors and our motto was “Our Aim Success; Our Hope to Win.” The assignment of editing a successful yearbook fell on the shoulders of the Steering Committee. They were Carolyn Fogg, Carole Sulborski, Anita Rosso, John Bumsted, Chester Nicora, John Beltrandi, Donnie Hastings, and Albert Girotti.” “Sandra, do you remember Mr. Wright’s taking our pictures at Bosworth’s Studio?” “Yes, he certainly had a wonderful sense of humor, but when we received our pic- tures, we stopped laughing at his jokes.” “He certainly was witty!” “Carol, have you forgotten our class play?” “Goodness, no! As I remember, Carolyn, you played a broken-down actress in our production of “You Can’t Take It With You.” “Don’t forget me. I played the maid who spent the night in jail with a striptcaser from a burlesque show. Don’t you think Betty Behrens and Craig McEwan did a wonderful job of playing the leading roles? Everyone in the cast did a wonder- ful job.” “Yes, it was the most hilarious play I have ever seen.” “Mrs. Kallock was our competent director. I’ll never forget how worried she was about the play not being ready on time. The last few days we worked like Trojans, and on the night of the play the result of all our work was very rewarding. The last time the class of ’55 met before Graduation was at our class banquet, which was held at the exclusive Rovelli’s. That was our first introduction to night-clubbing. It was at this banquet that we first saw our yearbook. How sad it seemed to be reading the History of our class and know that our years at Agawam High were over forever. The evening that ended our high school careers was an evening that will live in my memory forever. The capable members of the banquet committee were Anita Rosso, Biffy Moretti, and Betty Behrens.” “Well, we’d better be leaving. I heard the man say that they’re going to start tearing the building down in a few minutes.” 38 Sandy. “Just think of the thousands of pupils that have walked and laughed and cried in these hallowed halls.” Jean: ‘‘Yes, and over there in the auditorium the same thousands of pupils marched up to receive their diplomas—the reward of twelve years of study.” Sandy. “Yes, I remember our graduation. We were the last class to graduate from Agawam High School. I thought our caps and gowns were beautiful. The girls wore white gowns and caps with gold tassels and the boys wore navy blue gowns and caps with gold tassels.” Alice: “Well, in a few minutes this building will be no more. It will be one monument to learning that Agawam will lx minus forever.” Carolyn: “It’s been so nice to be able to reminisce with you again.” Sandy. “It certainly has. Our four years at Agawam High are something none of us will ever forget.” Carol: “Well, the Lonely Hearts Club has finally found me a date so I guess I’d better go get ready. I want to make a good first impression, you know.” Jean: “Today has helped bring back a little of yesterday. Carol, aren’t you going to wait to sec the final demolition?” Carol: “No, I don’t think I could stand it.” CRASH Alice: “Gone forever.” Carolyn Focc Carol Bailey Alice Harpin Jean Brezixski Sandra Torp 39 Ut Smooi h l f - Music Nmo Morett i Uords • Phyllis P lonchard 1 H- n j. j i IV.th Sad harts we Farewell dear Al'Ma j j bid fore-well to the Mot-er — U)c‘ll School e lore So well hold your S+ond-ards h iqh 7 -e- a e Hf-Tu r J Jm £3  «f4 | j the yeorfhev p«5« us by; the (oretefu I to tjou j jr-ever we'll be, at time has cow to soy yood- y . all our voices rit) ouf to Thee 1 3 t -©- 07 533 J j j,j «_____ft 4 f Ij $ frichdJ ooe wet 4 | i f e ioft Stride • Ou Clooe to our hearjs too Shell The time hot cone to ne’er for - «jet - our Soy yood-bye-as oc-ti|- l j and The down fhe path O-f S3: ■ r lot «nd.ny o . o l3T3 then u e yiu« fhenKs 3 3t £ i r-yj true and Sin—cere a dface the i fut-ture with-out fear.— -tf-8- b O K O .Second gndiny — b O -2- o £ i Suc e.SS -Ou Ho - p t f To u J' for -well dear flq - a   41 Winter HantaAy YOU CANT TAKE IT WITH YOU Alice Sycamore, the heroine ................................ S. Government. The situations and pre- dicaments in which the Sycamore family became involved made a very amusing story. The play was under the direction of Mrs. Katherine Kalloch, who did an excellent job. The assistant director was Jerome Doolittle. The play was enjoyed by everyone. 47 Viv H. The membership consists of junior and senior girls. The symbol of Ti-Hi-Y is a triangle representing mind, body and spirit. Because of the school schedule meetings were held twice a month, one afternoon and one evening meeting. In October a Halloween Party for the new junior members started our club ofT for a busy year. A religious meeting for December inspired every Tri-Hi-Y girl. During midwinter vacation ten girls along with Miss Miller journeyed to Pittsfield, Massachusetts, for a most pleasant week end to attend the Older Girls and Tri-Hi-Y Girls Conference. After vacation the Tri-Hi-Y girls sponsored an assembly for the high school, which was enjoyed by everyone. As usual, the year soon ended with the Mother and Daughter Banquet in May, climaxing the year’s events for the Tri-Hi-Y Club. Officers: President .... Vice-President Secretary .... Treasurer ..... Mr. Skolnick The purpose of the FFA is to teach modem farming methods, to attain higher scholastic standards, and to participate in community service. The boys really try to live up to these teachings of serving the community. They go around to farms in the area to check danger spots and improve or correct them if possible. By this inspection they arc able to prevent or reduce the loss of money due to rodents. They set a new record of rodent control by visiting 82 farms. Their activities are not limited to scholastic work alone, but include many social events as well. One of the main social events is the annual square dance, climaxed by the crowning of the chapter sweetheart. This year the chapter sweet- heart was Margery Morton. FFA also holds a Parents’ and Sons’ Banquet which is traditionally successful. This was the second year in succession that the Agawam Chapter was awarded the National Gold Emblem for outstanding achievements in the F. F. A. on the national level. Seniors FOOTBALL Agawam played its first football season without the services of Coach Harmon Smith. Mr. Smith was on a year’s leave of absence in Florida. Although only a few lcttcrmen returned from the 1953 squad, Mr. Leonardi coached the team well and led them to another fine football season. Our Brownies won two games and lost four. Two of Agawam’s four losses were by close margins; they were a twelve point loss to Holyoke and a seven point loss to Springfield Technical, Western Massachu- setts football champions. Our Brownies also lost tough games to Chicopee and Greenfield. Agawam’s two victories were spine-tingling battles with Westfield and arch- rival West Side. The victory over West Side was the most important and the most thrilling. Although the Terriers had been two touchdown favorites, our Brownies outplayed them and won the game easily. This victory closed the season on a successful note. Senior Members: Robert Mcrcadante, Co-Captain; Roger Phancuf. Robert DeGcorge, Dick DiLullo, Douglas Nielson, Charles Mitchell. Through the efforts of our five iron men, Earl Frcnicre, Roger Phancuf, Chester Krygowski, Craig McEwan, and Captain Donald Hastings, the Brownies won ten straight Valley Wheel games, including victories over arch-rivals West Side, 66-48, and Enfield, 46-41. This streak also included a record breaking 102-39 victory over Palmer High School. This year’s team also boasted one of the top basketball players in AHS history, Earl Frcnicre. Frcnicre was in the top ten in Western Massachusetts in scoring and was named to the starting five of the Western Massachusetts Small School All-Star Team. TRACK This year marked the revival of Track as a sport at Agawam High School after the absence of many years. Mr. Leonardi took on the job of organizing the new track team. The team plans to have a few meets before entering the Western Massachusetts Track Meet in June. The Senior members are John Bumstcd, Robert DeGcorgc and Charles Mitchell. For those that did, however, it took on an added importance because of the opportunity for exercise, very much missed because of the two platoon system this year. In '51, ’52, and ’53 volleyball, basketball, and softball were played during their respective seasons. This year, however, Girls’ Sports was not organized until late in the year, and basketball was the only sport played. The Senior girls won their numerals for softball in their junior year, and for basketball in their senior year. Director: Miss Hastings. Members: Cynthia Allen, Alice Arnold. Elizabeth Behrens.
