Eleven outstanding seniors were back who had been part of the Conference Co- Championship team of 1981. Five of those people were appointed to the 1983 All-Conference team: Bill Springman. Doug Lutmer, Jim LeBrun, Mike Lange, and Eric Palaschak. Receiving honorable mention were Jim Ruppert, Dave Haugom, and Mike Shorter. With this much talent on the team, a shot at the play-offs was hoped for. Our Dragon football team missed the play-offs by 16 seconds, or 3 points. On the night of September 16th, our Dragons met their match when the Sher- burn Raiders kicked a field goal with 16 seconds left in the game. The final score was 23-20. Those 16 seconds proved to be the most heartbreaking of the 1983 season. This year’s team tied their record for the best 11-man record and the longest winning streak by winning the last six games of the season. They also broke the record for most points obtained during the season. That total came to a whopping 263 points. The Dragons are coached by Craig Nowotny, Randy Strand, and Ray VanderWolde. Fulda, Sherburn, West Lyon, Cen- tral Lyon. Slayton, Luverne, and state ranked, double A Worthington. The Dragons also cap- tured first place in the Sioux Falls Washington and Fairmont tourneys, and second place at the George tourney. Only twice in the regular season was Adrian forced to settle for something other than a win. The Dragons tied Canby 21-21; and suffered a hard loss to double A Marshall 28-27. The famed winning streak was finally broken at 79 wins. With a record of 15-1-1, the Dragons entered District 8 competition and rolled to their fourth straight District 8 Mat Championship. The Drag- orts then grabbed the Region IIA title which quali- fied them for the state tournament held March 1, 2, and 3. Four individuals also qualified. State action showed an Adrian win over Chicago Lakes in quarter-final action. The Dragons were then stopped in semi-finals by Caledonia, and lost one more against Foley, which stapled the Drag- ons to a 4th place state finish. The community and townspeople took tremendous pride in their team’s accomplishments, which is one more proof that the Dragons are winners in the truest sense of the word.
