Even though the numbers were small the talent was large as Adrian came into the season with very high expectations. Leading the way for the way for the Dragons were Co-Captains Ted Bullerman and Ron Thier, both outstanding wrestlers who had been with the wrestling pro- gram since grade school. The squad opened their season with a 39-12 victory over Pipestone and soon were off on their quest for the coveted state title Adrian came into the 1982-83 season with the tough- est schedule ever, including tough Double A schools from Marshall and Worthington After the initial win over the Arrows the Dragons were on fire as they came through their regular sea- son undefeated. Included in these wins were 3 team tournament championships, George, Clarkfield, and Sioux Falls Washington, where Adrian defeated the top teams in South Dako- ta. Also included in these wins were victories over state ranked Canby, and in the big show- down with Worthington, the Dragons came out on top with a convincing 29-14 victory before 2500 wrestling fans. After posting a 14-0 record and 3 team cham- pionships the Dragons entered the district tour- nament the obvious favorites. Adrian did not disappoint as they racked up 215 points to easily out distance the field. The victory was the third straight District 8 title for Adrian, this was the first time any team had won 3 consecutive District 8 wrestling titles. Adrian crowned 8 dis- trict champs, one of those champs, Ron Thier at 132, earned his 100th win in the champion- ship bout. Adrian entered the Region tournament with confidence, but still remembering last year’s heartbreaking 28-25 loss to Janesville. This year Adrian left no doubt as they crushed Jack- son 46-6 in the first round and came back to defeat Janesville 42-6 for the Region 2A title After the Region team win Adrian came into the Region Individual Tournament still hot as they sent 6 members on to state including 4 champs, they were: Dan Flygare, Pat Dorn, Ted Bullerman, and Mike Scheffler. Bullerman, a standout at 155, also recorded his 100th career victory. March 3, 4, and 5, the days of the Minnesota State Wrestling Tournament is the tournament all wrestlers dream of competing in, but only a few ever realize that dream. The 1983 Dragons reached this point, 1 of the only 8 teams re- maining, all eying the crown of the state cham- pionship, the right of being the best of the best. The Dragons came into the tournament flying high. Adrian's dreams were soon crushed as they dropped to a 23-20 opening round duel to Paynesville. The Dragons attempted to re- group, to go for the Consolation trophy. How- ever, Adrian failed for only the second time this year as they lost a frustrating 25-17 to Canby. The team may have been out of the competi- tion, but two individuals were determined to represent Adrian in the individual portion of the tourney. Ted Bullerman battled his way into the finals at 155 only to lose a very close 9-4 deci- sion to Canby standout, David Christianson. Bullerman finished the year with a 30-2 record, his only losses coming at the hands of the Class A and Class A A 155 pound state champions. The other Adrian wrestler to enter the state finals was Ron Thier at 132 pounds. Thier en- tered the match with a 32-1 record and when he left the mat there was no doubt as to who was the 132 lb. state champ. Thier completely dominated the match with a 10-3 victory over Mike Melvin of Plainview. Awards for the season are as follows: Most Improved- Mike Scheffler; Most Dedicated-Ted Bullerman: Most Outstanding- Ron Thier; Silver Buckle Award- Ron Thier and Pat Dorn; Induct- ed into the Wrestling Honor Roll were Ted Bul- lerman, Mike Schetfler, Rick Loosbrock, and Ron Thier.’ . r A —Kg The Dragons are coached by Jim Carr with assistance from Henry Peterson, Craig Nowotny, and Joe Silko. Remembering the fun and laughter, The problems and the fears, And watching all our memories grow Throughout our high school years. The memories of the dances. And the new friends that we’ve met, Vacations, teachers, talking And exams we’d rather forget. Yes, high school days are precious but brief, Where all your dreams come true; It is not the end, but the beginning Of a life we'll start anew. 90 91 WORDS FOR THE FUTURE We cannot always know where roads will lead us, Or know what we will find at journey’s end, But if along our way we give our best to everyday, We’ll discover some new joy around each bend. 92 VISALIA
