That Was Then, This is Now . . . The beginnings of Adrian College started in Leoni, Michigan in 1845, as a theological in- stitute founded by the Weslyan Methodists. In 1855, Michigan Union College was established from this theological institute. In March of 1859, Dr. Asa Mahan and his col- lea ues terminated Michigan Union Collefe, pacied up the campus in ox-carts, and travel ed 60 miles west to Adrian. Dr. Mahan was Adrian College's first president after it was chartered by the Michigan le islature on March 28, 1859.
