In Memoriam The pleasant memories of each year are mellowed with the realization that some of the persons who con- tributed to the Adrian College we know are no longer with us. Their memories will prove the values of their contributions. DR. WILLARD TOUSSAINT, Professor of History, passed away May 18 at the age of 56. A member of the Adrian faculty since 1961, he was greatly respected for his knowledge and his understanding. MR. LAWRENCE O. BARIL, Instructor in English, died early in the school year. He had been a member of the Adrian faculty since 1967 and was working on his doc- torate at Michigan State University. MRS. HAZEL M. HERRICK, Wife of Mr. Ray W. Herrick of Tecumseh, and the lady for whom Herrick Hall is named, died late in May after an extended illness. She - was a Close friend of many of the students of the College and attended many of the programs on campus. DR. WILLARD TOUSSAINT MR. LAWRENCE BARIL MRS. Wa HAZEL M. H ‘ee ERRICK (below) Pres. 22 Retirements, 1970. MR. GEORGE LAKE DR. MILES PEELE “One of Adrian’s Greats’ DR. MILES L. PEELLE, chairman of the Biology Depart- ment and a member of the faculty at Adrian College since 1936, announced his retirement this year. Dr. Peelle has served with distinction since he first accepted the offer to teach from President Harlan L. Feeman. In his retirement he will continue his work in Ornithology and will also be involved with plant collections and study. During the winter months he will work with the Bab- son Audubon Society in Babson Park, just outside Lake Wales in central Florida. Come summertime he will con- tinue working with the National Audubon Society at Sarona, Wisc., near Superior. During Dr. Peelle’s 34 years at Adrian, the depart- ment has grown in size and strength, from a one-man operation with a first year equipment budget of $35 to a six man staff of dedicated teachers, each a specialist in his own right, each with a concern for the develop- ment of the individual student. Dr. Peelle himself is a living legend on Adrian‘s campus, and, in the words of the college president, “he has been recognized by his MRS. IOAN STEPP colleagues and students alike as a great teacher, a splen- did scholar, a highly skilled counselor, and an exemplary Christian gentleman.” GEORGE LAKE, who started teaching English at Adrian in 1957, has two projects in mind for his retirement— in addition to some well earned rest. One is the con- tinuation of a manuscript on symbology in grammar, a project many of his students have assisted him with down through the year. Another is the writing of some fiction, a project tied in directly with his coursework in such areas as Creative Writing, Shakespeare, Chaucer, and others. MRS. IOAN STEPP, a person who has been respected and appreciated by students and faculty from the very first day she arrived on Adrian’s campus in 1942, has also announced that she will be leaving Adrian College at the end of this year. Mrs. Stepp is currently serving as Director of Student Affairs. This is a job she does well, one which keeps her close to the students, and one which she adinits hating to leave “because we're just getting into the challenges of this office.” Her memo- ries are legion. One concerns the time she served two years as College Nurse, and her first patient had a rup- tured appendix, compounded by the fact he was a Czech- oslovakian immigrant-and was unable at that time to speak the language. But, through it all, she continued with high spirits and the students always appreciated her seemingly unlimited compassion and understanding.
