Perfect spacial layouts, many-times-refined headlines, and meticulously wrought out copy constitute a true masterpiece in the field of journalism. This masterpiece, however, does not make for a meritable yearbook if it is not representative of the people and times it is concerned with. In the academic year 1969-70, the editorial staff of the Mound found more to work with in the way of people and times and the at-times-ex- plosive relationship contained therein, than ever before. Adrian College, like campuses all over the country, served as the laboratory for student concern not only with world affairs, but with community directed projects as well as with that ever-present search for a self-satisfying maturity. Contained in these pages is only a sample of the actions and reactions that exist in that unique atmosphere so blithely titled “College.” The most this sample can hope to do is hint at what feelings surrounded life on Adrian’s campus in the year 1970. Nonetheless, for what you were, where you were, when you weré, take a look at the Mound, 1970. Less than a month after the college was chartered, it es- tablished a building committee and by that sum- mer of 1859 construction was under way. The dark clouds of Civil War hung over the city, and within a year the residents of Adrian asked for and obtained permission to house the Fourth Regiment of the Michigan Volunteers. The early buildings were the pride of the com- munity. Judge Beecher in 1861 described them as “superior in every way to those of the state university,” and a trustee committee in 1876 called them “a monument to the intelligence, good taste and liberality of the founders and patrons of the college.” But all was not favorable for long. On October 21, 1880, fire broke out in North Hall. The ex- tent of the damage was great, but the extent of the ingenuity of the trustees was, too. The build- ing was insured for $7,000, a large sum at the time, but not enough to remove the college’s debt lingering from the Recession of 1873. The trustees used the North Hall fire as a starting point in raising funds, and were successful to the point that they took the college out of debt, and into good financial condition once again. In 1904 electricity was introduced to the cam- pus and to North Hall under the leadership at that time of Dr. Brayman W. Anthony of Castle Shannon, Pa. Ironically, 50 years later, another resident of Castle Shannon, Dr. John H. Dawson, assumed the presidency of Adrian. Near the close of World War I, the building of many uses was called on again to house sol- diers. This time the Student Army Training Corps, a group of student-soldiers, lived in North Hall from October to December, 1918. Several stayed on to graduate later, and they held a reunion on campus in 1969. With the completion of new North Hall, a new era will start at Adrian, one in which every stu- dent will have new facilities in which to study and the pressing need to educate the modern youth will take place in modern surroundings— colored by a respect for the legions of persons who remembered North Hall and made Adrian’s current role possible. Old North Hall PN aortas New North Hall Plan Old North Hall Annex 21 22 Retirements, 1970. MR. GEORGE LAKE DR. MILES PEELE “One of Adrian’s Greats’ DR. MILES L. PEELLE, chairman of the Biology Depart- ment and a member of the faculty at Adrian College since 1936, announced his retirement this year. Dr. Peelle has served with distinction since he first accepted the offer to teach from President Harlan L. Feeman. In his retirement he will continue his work in Ornithology and will also be involved with plant collections and study. During the winter months he will work with the Bab- son Audubon Society in Babson Park, just outside Lake Wales in central Florida. Come summertime he will con- tinue working with the National Audubon Society at Sarona, Wisc., near Superior. During Dr. Peelle’s 34 years at Adrian, the depart- ment has grown in size and strength, from a one-man operation with a first year equipment budget of $35 to a six man staff of dedicated teachers, each a specialist in his own right, each with a concern for the develop- ment of the individual student. Dr. Peelle himself is a living legend on Adrian‘s campus, and, in the words of the college president, “he has been recognized by his MRS. IOAN STEPP colleagues and students alike as a great teacher, a splen- did scholar, a highly skilled counselor, and an exemplary Christian gentleman.” GEORGE LAKE, who started teaching English at Adrian in 1957, has two projects in mind for his retirement— in addition to some well earned rest. One is the con- tinuation of a manuscript on symbology in grammar, a project many of his students have assisted him with down through the year. Another is the writing of some fiction, a project tied in directly with his coursework in such areas as Creative Writing, Shakespeare, Chaucer, and others. MRS. IOAN STEPP, a person who has been respected and appreciated by students and faculty from the very first day she arrived on Adrian’s campus in 1942, has also announced that she will be leaving Adrian College at the end of this year. Mrs. Stepp is currently serving as Director of Student Affairs. This is a job she does well, one which keeps her close to the students, and one which she adinits hating to leave “because we're just getting into the challenges of this office.” Her memo- ries are legion. One concerns the time she served two years as College Nurse, and her first patient had a rup- tured appendix, compounded by the fact he was a Czech- oslovakian immigrant-and was unable at that time to speak the language. But, through it all, she continued with high spirits and the students always appreciated her seemingly unlimited compassion and understanding. In Memoriam The pleasant memories of each year are mellowed with the realization that some of the persons who con- tributed to the Adrian College we know are no longer with us. Their memories will prove the values of their contributions. DR. WILLARD TOUSSAINT, Professor of History, passed away May 18 at the age of 56. A member of the Adrian faculty since 1961, he was greatly respected for his knowledge and his understanding. MR. LAWRENCE O. BARIL, Instructor in English, died early in the school year. He had been a member of the Adrian faculty since 1967 and was working on his doc- torate at Michigan State University. MRS. HAZEL M. HERRICK, Wife of Mr. Ray W. Herrick of Tecumseh, and the lady for whom Herrick Hall is named, died late in May after an extended illness. She - was a Close friend of many of the students of the College and attended many of the programs on campus. DR. WILLARD TOUSSAINT MR. LAWRENCE BARIL MRS. Wa HAZEL M. H ‘ee ERRICK (below) Pres. Beginning with a bevy of buxom Burly Cuties and Snoz’s snide sidelines, the show stripped down to the bare essentials of humor and satire to frolic through bawdy blackouts, precocious puns, campy comedy ‘and vaudevillian vehicles, success- fully exposing to Adrian its interpretation of a theatre era gone by. We cannot help but realize this when we understand that more interest and enthusiasm has been displayed by the student body than ever before. (That's debatable? ) Professor Black, to whose zeal and enthusiasm is attributed the forensic attainments of the year, states that, “The value to the student of participa- tion in this activity lies not only in the fact that through this medium students are trained to speak correctly, forcefully, and effectively but also that they are trained at the same time to think logi- cally, persistently and intelligently.” ee ee ————————Eee_ organizations Debate Team 1928-29 68 An ounce of Adrian is worth a Mound of events. BOB BERGNER, Photographer The Mound’s office crumbled with the last bricks and dust of North Hall. We supposed it to be symbolic or perhaps even a broad hint. In either case, the staff did its best to relocate and continue to observe Adrian’s activity—both past and present. A college itself functions almost as a large club, incorporating many different areas of interest into a multi-faceted institution. The activi- ties initiated, the goals achieved and the standards set are of no sig- nificant value unless they can be recorded and kept for future refer- ence and learning. This, then, is the role of a yearbook and it’s staff— to act as secretaries and historian for the “college club” and to offer the minutes of Adrian’s academic, social and religious “meeting” of minds. This is only the beginning of many activities that involve Greeks on campus. Phi Kaplympics (opposite page) is a major event for sororities in which the girls are challenged to prove their prowess in sloshing through the mud, swinging mackerels, cracking eggs and the art of remaining gorgeous in the face of whipped cream. Promoting competition as well as camaraderie, Greek Week not only strengthened Panhellenic and_ Inter- fraternity bonds, exemplified by the end-of-the- week banquet, but had a philanthropic purpose in mind with admission charged for Spring Sing going to a memorial fund for a community swim- ming pool. Doctor of Divinity and Professor of Mental and Moral Science, Asa Mahan served as presi- dent of Adrian College twice, with a leave of absence in the interim, during which time it is said he advised President Lincoln on matters of the day. Although it is easy to deem figures from the past as ancient not only in age but in ideas, Asa Mahan was very much concerned with the signs of the times, and by today’s standards, he was very liberal, even radical. He was instrumental in promoting coeducation which was as signifi- cant in the 1800's as integration of race is today. In his first commencement address, Dr. Mahan proposed that “the mind should be taught to regard all subjects as proper for its notice which claims our attention or demands action in life.” His ideas formed Adrian’s founding principles education yesterday and today, both with the same ideals, both achieving excellence. Dr. Asa Mahan Adrian’s First President Dear Faculty, Students, and Friends: It is most appropriate that this issue of the Mound be dedicated to the memory of old North Hall. No other facility in Adrian‘s distinguished history has proven more versatile in the varied usages to which it was put, during 110 years of its existence on this campus. Every generation of Adrian's students to date have felt its presence and the vast majority found reason to make use of its facility during their days at their alma mater. Prior to the year 1942, and for nearly a half century, the college library, the administrative offices, dormitory rooms for men on the second and third floors, classrooms, and faculty offices for the humanities, social sciences, religion, philosophy and psy- chology were all housed within its venerable walls. Old. North Hall was this college’s campus landmark, long to be remembered and revered. ‘New North Hall rises on the site of its prede- | cessor to carry forward a splendid tradition. How- ever, for many of us—alumni, faculty, students, and friends—warmly pleasant memories of hours spent in old North Hall will endure a lifetime. John H. Dawson President ice Presidents DR. Although the times are changing and things to be learned have multiplied at a fantastic rate, basic truths have remained the same. The realization of these truths and of life itself through education is, as it has always been, in the hands of the instructor. What tomorrow becomes depends on the way events, past and present, refract from.the educator to the student. Teaching requires an open mind, a sensitivity to life and a sincere concern for the future. It is a responsibility and these are the people who meet it. MR. Inde- pendence has just been established and the next big decision is what to do With life. The answer usually is “Stay at Adrian and become a junior because Survey of the Bible won't transfer anywhere else.” Ned Schott Dan Schultz Tom Schultz Pat Sciberras Sue Scott Marty Seiser Robert Semmens Rick Senica Barb Serbinski Patti Shackelford Bill Shaw Charles Sheets Stan Sheppard Jerry Shoemaker Duane Silvis Alan Sipe Donna Slavik Robert Sloan John Small Dale Smathers Pat Smith Sue Smith Pat A. Not pictured is Secretary Connie Lake. i ae Class of 197] By this time, majors are declared and the Adrian junior is making happy progress to- ward his goals of the future, not letting the fact that he only has 7 honor points and needs to introduce 103 more cultural events into his life in nine short months to graduate as a world-wise senior. In 1920, the big campaign on the campus was “Can the Kaiser” as students felt a growing solitude about world peace. This year has been no different, with many stu- dents found in “drafty” situations, their con- cern mirrored by the faces of juniors involved in the Biafra campaign and war moratorium, altogether tuned in, turned on, and on top of campus events. Having passed through the friv- olous freshmen stage, sage sophomore and jesting junior, the senior is a beacon of versatility and knowledge—ready for fortunes, fancy, wisdom, whimsy and, most of all, the responsibility and chal- lenge of tomorrow's world. Adrian is no longer the college but the alma mater, and the years spent in study will, in years to come, be looked back upon as those “days of wine and roses.” DAVID E. RICKARD of Mt.
