Chess Club reactivated SHS had a chess club this year after a two year absence. The group, organized by sopho¬ more Roderick Kim and sponsored by Ivan Kemp, first met in early Octo¬ ber. They played chess on Thursdays from 2:15-4 p.m. in the back room of the IMC until Thanksgiving. After Thanksgiving the meeting date was changed to Tuesday. The club also participated in a match with Westland John Glen High School and went to a state high school tournament in Brighton, where they met opposition from De¬ troit Cass Tech, Midland, Flint Pow¬ ers, and Flushing high schools. Although the size of the club was small (10 members), Kim was pleased, saying members were well-behaved and serious about playing chess. “Just about everyone was nice he added. “They came to play chess . “It was fun and good competition said Freshman Bill Vowler. It ' s good experience for people who like to play chess, no matter how good you are , said Sophomore Steve Zawisa.
