Most students spend their free-time in the lower com- mons, where they can sit and relax, study, or talk to friends without getting into trouble. Another popular area, before school and during lunch hours, is the cafete- ria. The majority of upperclassmen, however, leave cam- pus for lunch. For them, Hawthorn Shopping Mall is a convenient gathering place, with Denny’s running a close second. Extra-curricular activities are a large part of the social scene at Stevenson as well. “Gossip is the art of saying nothing in a way that leaves practically nothing unsaid.” — Walter Winchell

A variety of looks were popular this year. Typical SHS attire ranged anywhere from the classic jeans and a shirt to futuristic “new-wave” apparel. Hairstyles took on a unique flair. Bobs and ponytails were back, along with the greased or completely shaved look. Other styles were more extreme, such as mohawks and hair that re- sembled colors by Crayolas. “Fashions fade, style is eternal.” — Yves St. Laurent Layered clothing, with bright colors and bold patterns, was the latest look. Another fashion favorite was over-sized every- thing. Swatch watches — as many as you could fit on your arm — were trendy items as well. Shoes in every imaginable shape and color complimented any outfit.

Stevenson has come a long way in providing a sound education for its students, The work of teachers and stu- dents created a fine reputation. We recently received a Certificate of Merit for “progress toward excellence in education” from the U.S. Offices of Education, and were one of a hundred schools in the country selected as a potential site for the National Computer Training Insti- tute. In 1989, we will look forward to hosting the National Association of Student Councils National Convention. Hard work sends ninety-three percent of our graduates on to college. “Men must be born free; they cannot be born wise; and it is the duty of the school to make free men wise.” . „ .
