The Driver Education program at Stevenson began in 1966 with Mr. Griffith teaching the classroom phase during the morning advisory period and the driving phase ONE PERIOD each day. In those days, most students had to take the driving part of the course in summer school. Today, two teachers teach Driver Education five periods a day with almost all of the soph- omores completing the course during the regu- lar school year. In 1966, less than 100 students completed the course and most of them had to do it in summer school. Last year, almost 350 students completed the entire course during the school year with the help of a short summer session for about 35 students. In 1971, the district purchased 10 driving simulators which has helped improve perceptual and procedural skills as well as enabling a larger number of our students to take Driver Education. Courses in English are designed to help students extend their potential and improve their skills in the area of communication. Stu- dents have the oppor- tunity to read widely and to discuss the classical and modem literature of the United States and England and other countries. Stu- dents are also encour- aged to give shape to their personal experi- ences and ideas by writing about them. In addition, electives courses permit students to develop their under- standing and their skills relative to areas such as drama, jour- nalism, speech-making, film and the mass media. 9
