The imagination of a child is healthy, and the mature imagina- tion of an adult is healthy; but there is a space of life between, in which the soul is in a ferment, the character undecided, the way of life uncertain, the ambition thicksighted: thence proceeds mawkishness, and all the thousand bitters which those people I speak of must necessarily taste in going over the following pages. . . Adapted from Keats' Preface to ENDYMINO 4DLAI E. STEVENSON HIGH SCHOOL Our schools, if they do their work, strengthen our deliberate and deliberative selves. Between the impression and the conviction, between the impulse and the action, we learn to pause and consider. — Joseph Tussman Administration Ladies and Gentlemen we will now Whistle while you work! And a one... Those Ritchies really know how to throw a party! Well, maybe next year. This should teach you not to copy the answer book!! Well I'll tell you Jac.... 5 6 7 Mr. Nowicki, Ms. Williams, Mr. Cotterman, Mr. Hanson Business Department The program of the Business Department is designed to help students become more efficient consumers and more efficient producers. Economics is the only course required for graduation. Other courses are elective and allow the individual to choose those which best meet their needs for either personal-use or for entry into the job market. BUSINESS DEPARTMENT ART DEPARTMENT Ms. Tauchas Art Department Over 200 students are enrolled in the 5 elective courses offered by the Art Department. The activi- ties are directed by one full time teacher and two who divide their teaching day equally between art and physical education. The de- partment is small, but a wide range of art experiences, both two and three dimensional are available within the program. A small but active group of art stu- dents is voluntarily involved in school service art efforts such as sign and poster painting and stage scenery. There are several stu- dents doing independent studies in art, two of whom are gaining in- teresting experience as teachers aides. Mr. McAvoy Mr. Machamer The Driver Education program at Stevenson began in 1966 with Mr. Griffith teaching the classroom phase during the morning advisory period and the driving phase ONE PERIOD each day. In those days, most students had to take the driving part of the course in summer school. Today, two teachers teach Driver Education five periods a day with almost all of the soph- omores completing the course during the regu- lar school year. In 1966, less than 100 students completed the course and most of them had to do it in summer school. Last year, almost 350 students completed the entire course during the school year with the help of a short summer session for about 35 students. In 1971, the district purchased 10 driving simulators which has helped improve perceptual and procedural skills as well as enabling a larger number of our students to take Driver Education. Courses in English are designed to help students extend their potential and improve their skills in the area of communication. Stu- dents have the oppor- tunity to read widely and to discuss the classical and modem literature of the United States and England and other countries. Stu- dents are also encour- aged to give shape to their personal experi- ences and ideas by writing about them. In addition, electives courses permit students to develop their under- standing and their skills relative to areas such as drama, jour- nalism, speech-making, film and the mass media. 9 FOREIGN LANGUAGE Along with exciting course offering the F.L. Dept, sponsored many extracurricular activities such as: BIKE HIKE-PICNIC and SOCCER GAME, KITE FLYING CONTEST, ALL SCHOOL SPANISH FIESTA DAY, INTER- NATIONAL DAY CAFE, TRIP TO MEXICO DURING EASTER VA- CATION, AN EXCHANGE PROGRAM WITH A GERMAN HIGH SCHOOL AND A TRIP TO FRANCE DURING THE SUMMER. Ms. Deihl, Ms. Zieman, Ms. Vreuls, Ms. Dimaria, and Ms. Daluge 10 Ms. Bergquist Ms. Nelson Mr. McCartney The Guidance Department helps with personal concerns, registra tion, exploring careers, post high school planning, testing, follow-up after high school, re- ferrals, talking and. . . . INDUSTRIAL ARTS The aim of industrial arts education at Adlai E. Stevenson High School is fourfold: (1) to provide a comprehensive understanding of the place of industry and technology in our society now and in the future, (2) to gain appreciation of industrial arts as a leisure time activity, (3) to develop an understanding of the world of work and ability to make occupational choices in terms of interest, aptitude, and capa- city, and (4) to develop discriminating consumers of the goods and services of American industry. Ms. McKinney Ms. Gillilan Left to Right: Mr. Rutt, Mr. Johannsen, Mr. Kircherr Ms. Kallas, Ms. Griffin, Ms. Fischer, Mr. Tieman, Mr. Hamburg MATH AND MUSIC During the 1973-1974 year the Mathematics Department at Adlai E. Stevenson provided options for students having varied interests, needs, or capabilities. In addition to the scheduled classes many students gained additional mathematical experiences by working with the computer, calculators, problems of the week , puzzles and by participating in the Annual Mathematics Association of American contest. Several students participate within the department through teacher aide and independent study programs. This past year the department initiated 4 quarter courses of Mini-Math and attempted some team teaching and large group instructions. Teachers within the department were Ms. Fischer, Ms. Griffin, Mr. Hamburg, and Mr. Tie- man. The Department para professional was Mr. Kallas. 12 Mr. Habley The Music Dept, offers the Stevenson student a variety of meaningful and interesting musi- cal experiences. In vocal music a student may elect to sing in the Girls' chorus, Girls Glee, Mens Chorus, A Cappella or the Madri- gal Singers and Jazz Lab. Instru- mental music division offers Introductory Band, Intermediate Band, Jazz Band, Symphonic Band, Music Theory I, Music Theory II, and Independent study. In addition to the music courses the music students participate in small groups. The highlight of the school year is the music dept, production of a Broadway musical. Musicals performed in the past were: Fiorello, My Fair Lady, Finians Rainbow, Sound of Music, Bells are Ringing, Oliver, Hello Dolly, and Oklahoma. Wiliam J. Misik is chairman of the Music Dept, and director of choral activities. Dave Habley is the director of the bands. Mr. Misik Ms. Schallerer P.E. But the team was basically dominated by one particular sophomore. That sophomore was Rick Sargent. He got the team's Big Gun for the second consecutive year. Rick's records are excellent, and just think what next year will bring. Rick turned in a 2nd place score in conference play, a 5th in Districts and a 6th in Sectional. The rest of the team didn't do quite as well, but the team as a whole did quite well in turning a 5-5 record. This brought them 4th place in the conference, which is very respectable. 32 GOLF Top Row: Nate Kaiser, Kevin Ruble, Perry McGrew, Mark Dombek, Randy Morris, Ted Lammers, Dave Nilson, Bottom Row: Jeff Morton, Gene Ruhnke, Brad Howell, Richard Wolf, Rob Canning, Ross Pierson, Larry Welch, Bill Clow, Coach Carley VARSITY Opponent Crown Mundelein Cary Grove Warren Lake Zurich Maine North Carmel Buffalo Grove Woodstock Lake Zurich Record 2-6 Score 0-5 0-5 0- 5 1- 4 1-4 1-4 1-4 1-4 0- 5 1- 4 Frosh-Soph Opponent Score Crown 5-0 Mundelein 3-2 Cary Grove 2-3 Warren 1-4 Lake Zurich 2-3 Maine 2-3 Woodstock 0-5 Lake Zurich 1-4 Tom Larson-Big Gun Winner 33 TENNIS TRACK ’74 Back Row: F. Giberto I hope the day will be a lighter highway For friends are found on every road Can you ever think of any better way For the last and weary trave- ler to go. Making friends for the world to see Let the peo- ple know you got what you need With a friend at hand you will see the light If your friends are there then everything's alright. It seems to me a crime that we should age These fragile times should never slip us by A time we never can or shall erase For friends to- gether watch our childhood fly. . . . This group of editors and staff members are going over material submitted to the magazine for publication with the purpose of choosing material for the spring publication of the Wit magazine. This year the WIT presented the fifth annual Satori program. One of the high- lights of the program was an abstract film produced by some Stevenson stu- dents called Hocus Pocus . Other features included a satirical play, Kung-to-You-Too , written by Vince Grace and featuring Dave Hicks, Jim Goski, Karen Oehring, and Debbie Goski. Pam Ervin sang several original folk songs, Mike Berry headed a God- spell group, and original poetry was read by Laura LaPlaca, Diane Schreib- weiss, Lisa Iseberg, and David McCart- ney. A Jazz dance was performed by Wanda Abrams and Geneva Dunlop, and Georgialee Daniels headed a dance group which presented selections from Purlie . This art understanding and appreciation show is presented annually by the WIT staff to help sponsor pub- lication of their magazine. 114 SKI CLUB 176 students joined Ski Club this year. Members enjoyed schussing and partying at many different slopes in Wisconsin. The year's major ski trip was to the Porcupine Mountains in Northern Michigan. The stu- dents worked furiously to gather points to qualify them to take this weekend. Ski Club is looking forward to another fantastic season in 1974-75. Top Row: B. Hicks, N. Dickson, S. Didier, R. The big event of the year was the Oldie Moldie Dance. It was well attended and everyone seemed to have a great time. Everyone who attended dressed to fit the 50's. Also a new event was added this year. It was Double Y Day. The Student Council sold Yo- Yos, then they held a contest to see who was the biggest Yo-Yo. The whole thing drove the librarians crazy but that's life. The year was completed by the annual Curvy-Derby. This year prizes were awarded for various classes, such as compacts and sporty cars. Working until all hours of the night they produced the great signs and banners that greeted the players as they ran on field. The Pep Club was also responsible for the signs that dominated the hallways during the sports season and cheered the teams on. The sponsors for this year were Mr. Hanson and Mr. Cotterman. They supported the club throughout the year, rarely missing a football or basketball game. Carlos Becegato-Brazil Bemie Herz-Germany Gunnar Wallstrom-Sweden INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS PROGRAM John PatweU to France Marie Moody to Brazil Marty Sporlein to Sweden GOOD-BYE!!!! 132 The International Students Program proved itself a real pro in establishing in- ternational relations, this year. The proof ? Why, Bemie Herz from Germany (AFS); Gunnar Wallstrom from Sweden (Rotary); and Carlos Becegatos from Brazil (YFU). Add to the list, our own Lynn Somme r- field, who went to the Netherlands for fourteen months through YFU; Jill Swanson to Brazil (Rotary); Marie Moody to Brazil (AFS); Marty Sporlein to Sweden (YFU) and John Patwell to France (Rotary). You can't get much more international than that! On the domestic side, the Isp flipped more flapjacks at the annual Pancake Breakfast; staged a fun-filled Internation- al Weekends for twenty visiting foreign students from other schools; and held an Art Action, so successful that it realized funds for the year's program needs. It was an outstanding year for ISP and many hard-working people made it all possible. This year's student board was headed by Cindy Buescher as President, Chad Black as Vice, and Jane Andreae as Secretary-Treasurer. 133 You have been given the opportunity to take your place among the tiny minority of the world's educated men. History will judge you. and you will ultimately judge yourself, on the extent to which you have used your gifts to lighten and enrich the lives of your fellow men. — Robert F. The game was well played by both teams, but the Patriots were defeated 12-0. Yet, the day was a pretty one. The sun was shining and the homecoming court was prettier than ever. The senior representatives were Virginia Hape- man, Margo Smith, and Mary Jo Van Derbosh. This year's queen was Kathy O'Donnoghue. All classes'floats were well assembled, but the judg- es after a long discussion decided that the winners were the junior and sophomore classes. Despite the final score of the varsity game that afternoon the annual Homecoming dance, held in the school's cafeteria was a lively event. The dance was sponsored by the Senior Class.
