FRESHMAN STUDIES PROGRAM Stevenson educators began working on a new freshman studies program last spring when it was found that the regular freshman curriculum was not meeting the needs of incoming ninth graders. A freshman team of ten teachers was organized under the direction of Dr. Edwin Griffith, and new ways were devised for presenting the basic material in English, mathematics, social studies, science and physical education. Board members have received monthly reports on the progress of the freshman program since it started last fall. Recently, they asked Dr. Kemp, who heads a widely respected organization that spends most of its time evaluating schools, to examine the new Stevenson program. Dr. Kemp was particularly enthusiastic about the esprit de corps which he found among students and teachers in the freshman program. He praised student attitudes saying in his report that most of the freshman students appear to like school a great deal. This liking for school was mentioned by nearly every freshman student with whom I talked and mentioned by most parents. He commended the teachers for their deep concern for students' interests and problems, not only in academic areas but also in other areas as well. Dr. Kemp pointed to the use of advisory groups as one of the greatest strengths of the program and the involvement of parents as a major as- set. He urged that both be expanded into the sophomore year. He praised the flexibility of the curriculum which permitted teachers to integrate the major fields of English, mathematics, science, social studies and physical education. He suggested that the variety of exper- iences available to the students is a very positive aspect of the program. Adlai Stevenson High School's new freshman studies program will con- tinue next fall with additions, changes and improvements. At the con- clusion of the '72-'73 school year Superintendent Banser commented, The freshman studies team has performed an outstanding service this year giving many long hours to a difficult task. They have made this school a highly desirable place for students and I am totally convinced that we saved a lot of young people. I am sure they will do as well as any previous class in their future studies. 23
