Probably the two bravest men in the school are Mr. Griffith and Mr. Spurlock. After all, they are the ones who have to risk their lives with the eager future race car drivers who want to get their license. It's not real- ly all that bad, but then again, why did Mr. Habley decide to teach solely P.E. ? Driver’s Education Mr. George Griffith (Dept. Chairman), Mr. Terry Spurlock English Department The English department regrettably (to the upper- classmen, anyway!) lost two teachers to the Fresh- man Studies program this year, but also there was a new addition, Mr. Granner. He also direct- ed the Fall Play, and did quite a good job! All in all it appears that the English Department has a pretty good time trying to get through to some of the students. Mrs. Dorothy Hain, Mr. Elmer Waldschmidt (Dept. Chairman), Mr. Robert Granner, Mrs. Ann Chilcott. Mr. Roland Habanek, Mr. William Gallagher, Miss Mary Francis

a mow I HMT V • Left to Right: Mr. J. Tieman, Ms. Anne Griffin, Mr. C. Hamberg and Ms. Fisher Three Adlai Stevenson High School mathematics department instructors and Principal Paul Kern were the authors of a cover story on computers in the January-February issue of the Illinois School Board Journal. The math writers include Charles Hamburg, department chairman; and instructors Samuel Ritchie and John C. Tie- man. Developing the theme that ’’Computers are No Mystery to Students at Stevenson High”, the authors emphasize that compu- ters were introduced to the cur- riculum to encourage a realis- tic view of the computer s role in man's world. MATH INDUSTRIAL ARTS The curriculum in the Industrial Arts program at Stevenson en- compasses the study skills and materials used in the industries to make products. On the freshman level, industrial arts is designed to acquaint the stu- dent with the areas of instruc- tion at Stevenson High School. At the sophomore level, the student is given an opportunity to explore one or more areas for a full year. Juniors and seniors are able to begin spe- cializing in specific areas. Up- on the completion of the three or four years of a specific area in industrial arts a student is ready for an on-the-job train- ing program or post-high-school education in a technical insti- tute or junior college. Left to Right: Mr. W. C. Kirchherr, Mr. R. Johannsen, Mr. M. Rutt. 20
