It was started in order to raise funds for more and better equipment for the students. And, with the selling of things such as bulletin boards, stationary, and even Tootsie-Roll Pops, they were quite successful. Miss S. Campbell, (Chairman) Mr. C. MacHamer Business Education If Mr. Cotterman can ever find an adding machine or a type- writer when he needs one, the Business education department runs quite smoothly. We were all sad at the loss of Mr. Han- son here—and everybody must miss his fantastic jokes. But there was also a new member added to the department, Mrs. Williams. Mrs. A. Miller, Mr. R. Jackson, Mr. M. Cotterman, Mrs. M. Williams, Mr. D. Hanson (on sabbatical) 17 Probably the two bravest men in the school are Mr. Griffith and Mr. Spurlock. After all, they are the ones who have to risk their lives with the eager future race car drivers who want to get their license. It's not real- ly all that bad, but then again, why did Mr. Habley decide to teach solely P.E. ? Driver’s Education Mr. George Griffith (Dept. Chairman), Mr. Terry Spurlock English Department The English department regrettably (to the upper- classmen, anyway!) lost two teachers to the Fresh- man Studies program this year, but also there was a new addition, Mr. Granner. He also direct- ed the Fall Play, and did quite a good job! All in all it appears that the English Department has a pretty good time trying to get through to some of the students. The math writers include Charles Hamburg, department chairman; and instructors Samuel Ritchie and John C. Tie- man. Developing the theme that ’’Computers are No Mystery to Students at Stevenson High”, the authors emphasize that compu- ters were introduced to the cur- riculum to encourage a realis- tic view of the computer s role in man's world. MATH INDUSTRIAL ARTS The curriculum in the Industrial Arts program at Stevenson en- compasses the study skills and materials used in the industries to make products. On the freshman level, industrial arts is designed to acquaint the stu- dent with the areas of instruc- tion at Stevenson High School. At the sophomore level, the student is given an opportunity to explore one or more areas for a full year. Juniors and seniors are able to begin spe- cializing in specific areas. Up- on the completion of the three or four years of a specific area in industrial arts a student is ready for an on-the-job train- ing program or post-high-school education in a technical insti- tute or junior college. Left to Right: Mr. W. C. Kirchherr, Mr. R. Johannsen, Mr. M. Rutt. 20 SCIENCE DEPARTMENT SOCIAL SCIENCE DEPARTMENT Allen Botimcr, head of Adlai Ste- venson High School's social science department, was selected for the 1972 Outstanding Teacher Achieve- ment Award. He took his first teaching position with Gavin Grade School in 1956 and taught in Waukegan, Libertyville, and Lake Zurich public schools be- fore joining Stevenson High School's social studies department in 1966. He became department chairman in 1969. An accomplished trombonist, he has played in the Waukegan Philhar- monic Orchestra and several con- cert bands in Wilmette and Zion. He also plays the cello and French horn. Three years ago he stepped in to conduct a Stevenson High School spring concert when a staff member became ill before the performance. For six years Botimer coached Stevenson's debating teams and won several area contests with his squads. He is a past president of the Ste- venson chapter of the Illinois Edu- cation Association and was regional representative of the IEA last year. 22 FRESHMAN STUDIES PROGRAM Stevenson educators began working on a new freshman studies program last spring when it was found that the regular freshman curriculum was not meeting the needs of incoming ninth graders. A freshman team of ten teachers was organized under the direction of Dr. Edwin Griffith, and new ways were devised for presenting the basic material in English, mathematics, social studies, science and physical education. Board members have received monthly reports on the progress of the freshman program since it started last fall. Recently, they asked Dr. Kemp, who heads a widely respected organization that spends most of its time evaluating schools, to examine the new Stevenson program. Dr. Kemp was particularly enthusiastic about the esprit de corps which he found among students and teachers in the freshman program. He praised student attitudes saying in his report that most of the freshman students appear to like school a great deal. This liking for school was mentioned by nearly every freshman student with whom I talked and mentioned by most parents. He commended the teachers for their deep concern for students' interests and problems, not only in academic areas but also in other areas as well. Dr. Kemp pointed to the use of advisory groups as one of the greatest strengths of the program and the involvement of parents as a major as- set. He urged that both be expanded into the sophomore year. He praised the flexibility of the curriculum which permitted teachers to integrate the major fields of English, mathematics, science, social studies and physical education. He suggested that the variety of exper- iences available to the students is a very positive aspect of the program. Adlai Stevenson High School's new freshman studies program will con- tinue next fall with additions, changes and improvements. At the con- clusion of the '72-'73 school year Superintendent Banser commented, The freshman studies team has performed an outstanding service this year giving many long hours to a difficult task. They have made this school a highly desirable place for students and I am totally convinced that we saved a lot of young people. I am sure they will do as well as any previous class in their future studies. 23 $z SI UOJS 26 COUNTRY 27 Top Row Left to Right: Mr. Wayne Tsutsmi, Mike Schull, Charles Theobald, Don Brun, Jeff Bowen, Fred Koenig, Steve Dush, John Cordes, Brett Ferris, Leonard Jarc, Mr. Paul Swan. They look very strong, and should make next year’s varsity quite interesting and extremely good. Varsity Football 1972 The Patriots started the season off with a 21-0 victory over the Lisle Lions, and it looked as though they were off to another winning season. After another victory over Lutheran South, we suffered our first defeat of the season to Little Flower, 14-7. But then the Patriots came back over- whelmingly to clobber Elgin in the Homecoming game, 44-0. Next week's game wasn't quite as one-sided, as we barely squeaked by a tough Jefferson team, 8-7. Then, after the Aurora Central game, disaster struck, first at Oak Forest, and then at Lake Zur- ich. But our team still ended the sea- son with a winning record of 5-3, the fourth year in a row in which we came out tops. GIRL’S SPORTS This year, for the first time, Stevenson girls participated in interscholastic sports. We had a tennis team, volleyball, basketball, track, and softball. The Student Council has sponsored several projects this year. The first is a park. Although the park has not been started plans have been drawn up and money for the first tree has been donated. The park will be built in the area found in front of the building. Most of the other projects sponsored by the Council this year were fund raising projects to support the park. The first event was an Oldie Moldie” Dance featuring songs from the ”50 s”. Also there was a Curvy Derby Race which involved an obstacle course for cars, in the parking lot. Following the race there was a dance to award prizes. The other project the Student Council sponsored was the collection of canned goods to be distributed throughout the area to needy families. The Council succeeded in collecting several boxes of canned goods. The Student Council has worked hard and hopes to continue to hold meetings during the summer to com- plete some of their ideas. 119 The STATESMAN From left to right: Karen Taylor, , Diane MacArthur, Glen Wielgus, Diane Didier, Lynn Sammerfield, Mrs. Chilcott; sponsor, Laura LaPlaca. The STATESMAN seems to be improving every year, and this year was no exception. The staff had a paper out every two or three months, and it had new and different columns each time. Keep it up! 120 Laura LaPlaca and Karen Taylor work on preparing material for the WIT. Those students who have Mrs. Hain for a teacher have probably heard many a time her request for material for the WIT. The WIT, you say, what s that? Well, it's the student literary magazine that comes out one or more times a year featuring short stories, poems, and essays written by students. It's quite good, too. The WIT also sponsors a program, SATORI, to help pay for costs of the magazine. Members include: Diane Didier, Karen Taylor, Laura LaPlaca, Glen Wielgus. Sponsor--Mrs. Hain. Once a week 27 of the members work and play with children at the Klingberg School for Retarded Children. An- other group help with patients at Downey Veterans Hospital and several participate in Condell Memorial Hospital's Penwasciz student nurse program. Outreach has organized such programs as collecting dog food labels to furnish a seeing eye to a needy blind person and also collecting trading stamps for the American Red Cross. A regular program of the club is the sending of cookies to ser- vice. Early in November homemade cookies are brought in by the club members. The cookies are then individually wrapped and packed in tin containers for shipment overseas. Another annual project is the sponsoring of a square dance for the patients of Riverside Manor, a sheltered care center in Lincoln- shire. The club supplied a caller, punch and cake. The club now has a total of 70 working members. It is sponsored by Dorothy Gillilan, School Guidance Counselor and Ardel Francis, the school nurse. Pep Club 133 ISP Thanks to the International Student Program, we are lucky enough to have Shannon Brown, from South Africa, with us for a year. We, in turn, sent two students, Dawn Horvath and Randy Buesher, abroad for the school year. This is the first time we have been able to have our students spend an entire year in a foreign country. Two fund-raising projects for next year's program were the annual Pancake Breakfast, which was a huge success, as usual, and some- thing new; the Faculty Talent Show, which had about as many students in it as faculty mem- bers. This, too, was quite successful, and at the same time we were able to see the talent which is hidden in the daily school hours. More than 130 awards were presented to Adlai Stevenson High School students at the annual honor assembly in the auditorium. Stevenson's top student, Rodger MacArthur, was presented with a certificate for being elected to a National Merit Scholarship. Charles N. AWARDS NIGHT 137 Special Events Adlai E. Stevenson High School Presents More than 200 students, teachers, and parents helped to stage this year's production of Oklahoma! , which was presented on April 27,28, and 29. In addition to the 23 singing and speaking parts, 50 other students partici- pated in choral and choreography numbers. Also contri- buting to the great success of the musical was the 26 piece pit orchestra, directed by Dave Habley. Behind the scenes were many other students involved with set con- struction, promotion, tickets, ushering, and assisting the director. The student director was Lynn Sommerfield, student stage manager was Diane Schloer, with Carol Bower as her assistant. With the help of all these people, plus the eager partici- pation of all cast members involved, Oklahoma! was one of the best musicals the school has ever put on. There was a tremendous amount of responsibility placed on the students, who spent most of their evenings at the school until ten o'clock. Many thanks go to all who participated, including cast members, parents, and especially Mr. Misik. Four one-act plays, ’Impromptu , Sorry, Wrong Number , Riders to the Sea , and Overruled were presented in February. Mr. Granner of the English Department was the director, and those students participat- ing include Diane MacArthur, Steve Mose, Amy Borgstrom, Holly Borgstrom, Dennis Simpson, Bob Bergland, Anne Fishbein, Jennie Miller, Monica Mormino, Pat Miller, Diane Didier, Curt Hornback, Anne Choate, Mike Topel, Marcia Dush, Glen Wielgus, Rodger MacArthur, and Laura LaPlaca. Other students also participated behind the scenes to make this first a success. The Crucible The Crucible, a four-act play, was presented by the Drama Club for two nights. This was the first play done under the direction of Mr. Bob Granner, and the results were great! All members of the cast did an excellent job, and with the terrific help of the technical and stage crew, the play was a huge success. Following the long day of constructing floats, painting windows, etc., was the coronation of the Queen. The cheerleaders and band performed; Mr. Baumann intro- duced the Varsity football players. Fi- nally came the announcement everyone was waiting for—Amelia Darby was crowned the Homecoming Queen of 1972. 147 IT WAS A PERFECT FOOTBALL DAY, SUNNY, CRISP, AND COOL. THE PATRIOTS RESPONDED WITH A ONE-SIDED VIC- TORY OVER THE ELGIN HILLTOPPERS, WITH THE SCORE OF 44-0. THE PATRIOTS OWNED THE GAME FROM THE START, AND SO HAD A PRETTY FUN DAY CLIMBING ALL OVER THE TOPPERS. AFTER THE EXCITEMENT OF THE GAME AND FLOAT BUILD- ING, ETC., THE DANCE WAS A WELCOME CLIMAX TO THE WEEKEND'S FESTIVITIES. THE BAND WAS THE BUS STOP AND THE SENIOR CLASS DECORATED THE CAF- ETERIA APPROPRIATELY. IT WAS A FUN EVENING FOR ALL, TOPPED OFF WITH PRESENTATION OF THE QUEEN AND HER COURT. ALL IN ALL, IT WAS A GREAT HOMECOMING. Prom 1973 tAST SIDE«■ ' 2■ UMIT 24 F RIOD Despite the rainy weather, this year's Junior- Senior Prom had to be considered a success. This once-a-year occasion was held on a boat, the Lady of the Lake , up in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Over 220 students attended the dance, which is one of the biggest turn-outs ever. Although crowded, every one seemed to have a great time. He didn’t see that, did he? Relax, Jeri.
