Adlai Ewing Stevenson will not be remembered only as a politician or holder of offices, but as an eloquent man with a unique confidence in the worth and ability of mankind. Stevenson believed in people, and thus made people believe in them- selves. He gave them the confidence to accept the challenges he knew they were capable of accepting. Stevenson’s own great qualities compile quite a list: dignity, courage, intellect, idealism, commitment, wisdom, and humor are only a few. And, of course, that remarkable accompanying ingredient of humility. Adlai Stevenson’s contributions as a statesman should not be minimized, however. He gave his utmost in service, not only to the people of this nation, but to all of mankind. Upon his death, not only the flags of the United States were flown at halfmast, but the flags of all the countries of the United Nations as well. The loss of Adlai E. Stevenson will be felt for a long time to come. His thoughts and ideas were valued by many, both the great and the unknown. We of the Ambassador staff have included a selec- tion of Stevenson’s quotes in this volume because we feel that through them a small segment of Adlai Stevenson the man can be captured and held.
