THE AMBASSADOR ADLAI E. STEVENSON HIGH SCHOOL PRAIRIE VIEW, ILLINOIS VOLUME V Organizations — Page 44 Athletics — Page 68 Kathy Taylor — Editor-in-Chief Mike Shimer — Assistant Editor Mr. Habanek — Adviser Adlai Ewing Stevenson will not be remembered only as a politician or holder of offices, but as an eloquent man with a unique confidence in the worth and ability of mankind. Stevenson believed in people, and thus made people believe in them- selves. He gave them the confidence to accept the challenges he knew they were capable of accepting. Stevenson’s own great qualities compile quite a list: dignity, courage, intellect, idealism, commitment, wisdom, and humor are only a few. And, of course, that remarkable accompanying ingredient of humility. Adlai Stevenson’s contributions as a statesman should not be minimized, however. He gave his utmost in service, not only to the people of this nation, but to all of mankind. Upon his death, not only the flags of the United States were flown at halfmast, but the flags of all the countries of the United Nations as well. The loss of Adlai E. Stevenson will be felt for a long time to come. His thoughts and ideas were valued by many, both the great and the unknown. We of the Ambassador staff have included a selec- tion of Stevenson’s quotes in this volume because we feel that through them a small segment of Adlai Stevenson the man can be captured and held. Kathy Taylor Editor-in-Chief Sharon MacDonald Staff member Adlai Ewing Stevenson 1900-1965 5 “We are not, I take it, a race of whimpering adoles- cents who can’t face the truth, but a race of men and women, proud, courageous and unafraid.” ACTIVITIES Quarterback, Rick Ward, plows through the Little Flower defense. HOMECOMING 1969 The Class of 73’s prize-winning float. The Homecoming Day car parade. The varsity cheerleaders enjoy half-time ceremonies. Our fifth homecoming marked Stevenson’s gradual maturity as reflected in its increased number of re- turning alumni, its extension of more student in- volvement and the firming of traditions. School spirit began at the top with the administration dis- missing classes early so that students could work on floats or collect wood for the bonfire. The Friday night bonfire was an old-fashioned “barn-burner” complete with crowds of students cheering as outhouses, signs and Chevy backseats blazed. The highlight of the night was the crowning of the Homecoming Queen, Sandy Taylor. The next day, the Patriots battled Little Flower in fierce compe- tition. Although we lost, spirit was not dampened as we enjoyed an exciting afternoon of football and pageantry with the performance of the band, Pom Pon Corps and the queen and her court. Despite the excitement of all the festivities, the students found enough energy to climax the week- end with the traditional Homecoming Dance with Queen Sandy Taylor reigning over the closing night celebration. The Homecoming Dance was the weekend’s final celebration. Presentation of the roses. The captains get together. 9 HOMECOMING QUEEN SANDY TAYLOR Dora Dombrow Senior Attendant Kathy Friday Senior Attendant Debbie Mann Senior Attendant 1969 HOMECOMING COURT Stevenson was well represented this year in the selection of its Homecoming queen and court. Dur- ing the week preceding homecoming, nominations and voting took place; from the Senior class, four girls were selected for the court. They were Dora Dombrow, Kathy Friday, Debbie Mann, and Sandy Taylor. From these the homecoming queen would be elected. The period of anxiety ended at Friday night’s bonfire when Sandy Taylor was crowned by football captain Mike Adams. She reigned over the weekend’s festivities, with her court in atten- dance. Completing the court were freshman atten- dant Esmerelda Rendon, sophomore attendant Cheryl Oehring, and junior attendant Bonnie Schmidt. Bonnie Schmidt Junior Attendant Cheryl Oehring Sophomore Attendant Esmerelda Rendon Freshman Attendant “The cast acted out parts for the audience. They were those parts for themselves. An excellent pro- duction by as good a cast and crew.” Lucy Kos, the maid. “After four weeks of rehearsal, I actually believe Harvey to be alive and existing within our reach. Some of us have been lucky enough to find him, and others had better start looking. Harvey is the greatest, and so are Miss Francis and Mr. Gallagher.” Jan Traweek, Myrtle Mae Simmons. “I hope our audiences were listening to what Har- vey had to say — he was absolutely right.” Anne Wolf, Veta Louise Simmons. HARVEY... “Harvey made me a nervous wreck for weeks, but I enjoyed it.” Tom Hunter, Elwood P. Dowd. “Harvey was really fun, and I’m sure everyone in it carried a bit of Harvey with him.” Chris Nelson, Betty Chumley. “Harvey was a thoroughly enjoyable play to be a part of, and I’m sure the cast, crews, and directors will remember it for quite some time.” Donna Bar- thule, Mrs. Ethel Chauvenet. “I only wonder if people understood the play’s meaning. It was more than just a cute story about an invisible rabbit.” Gregg Flood, Dr. William R. Chumley. “.. .one of the best productions ever to appear on the Stevenson stage. An excellent cast and two fine directors helped make Harvey what it was.” Pat Wolowic, E. J. Lofgren. “A roaring success by my standards. Each part came alive, and we all lived at that moment.” Brian Horne, Judge Omar Gaffney. “Harvey was a very interesting work of art for stu- dents willing to earn both acting and technical ex- perience.” Rick Quinlan, Duane Wilson. “I had a lot of fun learning how to act. It was an experience with people that I’ll never forget.” Dan Walker, Dr. Lyman Sanderson. “Being in Harvey was a fun and interesting experi- ence. Mr. Gallagher and Miss Francis are great people to work under. I think everyone did a good job making it one of our best productions.” Becki Salzman, Ruth Kelly, R.N. CHRISTMAS Singers capture a mood. CONCERT The choral and instrumental divisions of the music department worked together again this year to per- form the annual Christmas Concert. The program began with the Symphonic Band’s performance of the difficult “Festive Overture” by Shostako- vich and featured well-known — and not so well- known — Christmas music. “And a one, and a two. . “Next the band will perform our own rendition of ‘Jingle Bells’!” “Now, coach?' U SPRING The Symphonic Band presented its annual Spring Concert on May 16th. The Band performed the three musical selections for which it received a superior rating at the state band contest, as well as several more recent works. In addition, the newly-formed Jazz Band played such hits as “Hay Burner,” “Cherry Street,” and “Bugaloo.” CONCERTS For the first time, Stevenson’s Choral Department presented its own Spring Concert, entitled “A Night Worth Note”. In addition to the performances of the A Cappella Choir and Girls’ Concert Choir, the Madrigals also sang various numbers. The Madrigals had just returned from the state Choral Contest with superior ratings, and treated the audience to a few of their prize- winning renditions. A Cappella — minus their robes! Sentry Club donates Stevenson’s signboard. Pierre Hefti wins the Big Gun award in tennis. SENTRY CLUB Sentry Club, led by President Glen Mil- ler did an outstanding job of promoting school spirit. Among the Sentry Club’s activities were the athletic banquets, the donation of the signboard for the foot- ball field, and the running of the refresh- ment stand at football games. The Sentry Club undoubtedly played a big part in the increased school spirit at Stevenson. PEP CLUB—OFFICERS: Tim McGahan, President; Vivian Johnson, Treasurer; Miss Lloyd, sponsor; Mr. Hanson, sponsor; Beeki Salzman, Secretary; Bill Green, Vice-President. PEP CLUB This year’s Pep Club was particu- larly active in promoting school spirit. Perhaps the most impor- tant activity was the purchasing of the Victory Cannon, a minia- ture cannon to be used as an award for the winner of the Lake Zurich-Stevenson football games. Pep Club also arranged for spec- tator buses for all away games, and held the annual Mr. Ugly dance. Pep Club helped promote school spirit. Kathy Friend gets in the mood of a song. FOLK SONG CLUB This year’s Folk Song Club grew to such a great membership that the entire club could not be photographed together! With its increase in member- ship, the club showed a great increase in activity. Led by its sponsor, Mr. Maxson, and the officers — Peter Trzyna, President; Pierre Hefti, Vice- President; and Alice Isaacson, Secre- tary-Treasurer, — the club participated in such diverse activities as talent shows, field trips, and even movie- making. With this increased activity and prestige will come an even greater membership for next year, and the Club promises to grow in importance. Underclassmen such as these comprised the greatest portion of the membership. Folk Song Club members enjoy themselves at a get-together. S3 CHESS CLUB — SEATED: Dan Fishbein, Kathy Friend, Peter Trzyna, Captain. STANDING: Rick Ireland, Jack Leitz, Mike White, Mel Loefer, Nancy Sosna, Vlae Kershner, Mrs. Stallman, Sponsor. CHESS CLUB This year a new club was founded at Stevenson, the Chess Club. It began with a few students interested in playing chess together and ended with five trophies at a Rockford tournament! The Chess Club promises to be a profitable organization for those students academic enough for the game of chess. Team members Dan Fishbein and Vlae Kershner practice up between matches. STAGE CREW The Stage Crew is perhaps the most under- rated club at Stevenson. Members of the crew are not called on stage for the ap- plause after a play or musical, nor are they given recognition for every assembly or tal- ent show they help out in. And yet the Stage Crew deserves every bit as much credit as the actors and actresses on stage, for they do at least as much — and possibly more — work on the productions. They build and decorate all sets, gather all needed props, make or alter all costumes, and change all sets and props during each pro- duction. And in between plays and musi- cals, they are busy working on talent shows, assemblies, meetings, and even graduations. The Stage Crew is perhaps the greatest and most hard-working service club at Steven- son—and is certainly one of the most fun to be in! STAGE CREW — FIRST ROW: Colleen Richeson, Cassie Kilroy, Barb Lammers, Marsha Sanders. SECOND ROW: Bill Ed- munds, Sally Hornback, Marie Knauth, Walter Klier, Steffy Hintz. Future Homemakers of America and Future Teachers of America, have served similar purposes. Both clubs have contri- buted many worthwhile projects to the school. But beyond this, these organizations have pre- pared students for professions after graduation and introduced them to the many facets of teaching and homemaking. G.A.A. members enjoy themselves at an early meeting. SYMPHONIC BAND Stevenson’s Symphonic Band, under the direction of Mr. Habley, completed a busy calendar of events this year. It began before school started, when the Marching Patriots practiced the intricate drills and musical numbers that they would per- form later at home football games. Besides march- ing at Stevenson, the Patriots also took part in Northwestern’s Homecoming Parade in Evanston. At Christmastime, the Symphonic Band presented the annual Christmas Concert, and later in the spring held another concert. Many of the members of the band contributed their talents to “Oliver” by playing in the pit orchestra. Near the end of the year, the Marching Patriots again practiced their marching in preparation for the Half Day and Wheeling Memorial Day Parades. Perhaps the greatest accomplishment of the band, however, was its first place-superior rating in the Illinois state band contest. This was the first year the Symphonic Band had entered this competition, and the superior rating it received became a great source of pride for the members of the band, their director, and the school. Mr. Habley conducts the band. THE SYMPHONIC BAND — FIRST ROW: Jan McCullough, Dawn Horvath, Vivian Johnson, Mike Gibfreid, Donna Barthule. The ultimate goal of the staff was to produce a book filled with worthwhile remembrances of the school year. As a result of the staff’s efforts, the Ambassador met its deadlines and completed a record of the year’s activities and events. “Everyone has something to contribute to the wel- fare of his fellow man. No one is unimportant.” ATHLETICS VARSITY CHEERLEAD ERS: Jill Brown, Dora Dombrow, captain. Lucy Miller, Cindy Collie, Pam Wolfe. VARSITY CHEERLEADERS Stevenson was able to boast of two fine squads this year — the Varsity Cheerleaders led by Cap- tain Dora Dombrow, Jill Brown, Lucy Miller, Cindy Collie, and Pam Wolfe, and the Junior Var- sity Cheerleaders consisting of Megan Smith, Paula Dombrow, Sharon Halford, Debbie Mc- Intosh, and Captain Pam Morris. The Corps performed for all home foot- ball games, basketball games, and pep assemblies. For the last home game the Seniors of the Corps prepared a special surprise and performed a rou- tine to the music of “Get Ready.” 72 The Pom Pon Corps performs at a football game. The alternates: Leslie Banner, Gayle Almquist, and Melinda Richmond. The hard-working captains: Anne Wolf and Jackie Peterson. Coach Baumann looks over the field at his fight- ing Patriots: Mike Adams, Mark Anderson, Steve Buckley, Bruce Graham, Mac Hanley, Bill Her- tel, Norm Kuennen, Bill Lange, Jim Martin, Bill McElroy, Charlie Murray, Glenn Pflughaupt, John Schuentz, Tom Solazzo, Brian Tyler, Jim Welch, Lenny Boltz, Jim Hartford, Ralph Kuhnke, John Lange, Jack McCulloch, Gene McIntosh, Dennis Mitchell, Mark Moody, John Rynders, Kevin Taylor, Stan Feldbusch, Gary Moore, John Kaye, and manager Dave Girten. VARSITY FOOTBALL 75 'Good form but not much distance!” “Do it right this time!” Hard fighting picks up extra yards. Under the direction of two new coaches, Mr. Hansen and Mr. Cargill, the Frosh-Soph football team turned in a fine season. Their record at the end of the season was the best ever turned in by a Frosh-Soph team at Steven- son. With fine and promising athletes like these, the future looks bright for Stevenson football. 76 Mike Adams Guard Dan Walker Guard Mr. Jacobs Coach H0-3JHJ 38 VARSITY SCORES Wauconda 62 45 Grayslake 72 40 Providence 97 33 Aurora Central 59 38 Forest View 85 39 Round Lake 37 49 Carmel 63 47 Cary Grove 48 41 Glenbrook North 78 36 Lake Park 62 61 Glenbard North 68 51 Lake Zurich 61 47 Fenton 55 54 Walther Lutheran 51 49 Kankakee Eastridge 89 49 Beloit Turner 73 57 Round Lake 55 47 Lake Zurich 69 37 Kankakee Eastridge 59 61 Grayslake 75 “You jump higher in Red Ball Jets!” VARSITY BASKETBALL After a 2-18 season this year, Coach Jacobs can only wait to see what next year brings. Some unexpected talent was shown by several players this year, and with the help of those exper- ienced players who will return next year, Stevenson may have a more successful season. Along with the feeling of escapement from such things as school lunches, 72-minute periods, and school-bus rides, came the realization of the passing of the high school years. Those years had been filled with close friendships with schoolmates and teachers alike, friendships that could not be pain- lessly or easily broken. And every senior must at some time have realized that he had indeed matured a great deal during his four year stay at Stevenson — and been thank- ful for the maturing. It was not surprising, therefore, that on graduation night one could find tears and sad faces mingled with the usual smiles and excited laughter of leavetaking. Donna Barthule straightens Hal Cook’s mortarboard before the ceremony. The graduates relax outside. Mr. John Eoyang of Kendall College gives the graduation address. Andy Elmore, Vice-president of the Class of 1970, Rives the farewell address. Marshall Lucy Miller leads the procession of graduates. 131 “I would speak to you not of the past, when my generation held its hopes so high, but of the future. . ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY J. D.
