September brought its heat, its classes, its hazing and its soccer games. At times the heat was so intense that instructors were forced to hold classes out of doors. At the first soccer game of the season, the students turned out full force. It was to be the largest crowd that would show up all season. Co-eds swelled the bleachers, adding a touch of glamour to the boisterous crowd. The exuberant and opti- mistic students arrived early in order to reserve a seat. It was a good game in spite of the Panther’s defeat to Brown by a 1 —0 score. ii

“

For many of the Freshmen, Orientation and Hazing were their first ex- cursions into the big bad world of college. They were dragged from building to building in the smoldering September heat by group lead- ers, upperclassmen who wished to do service to their University and also line up a few likely looking prospects for their fraternity. Besides instructing the Freshmen in the ideals and traditions of the University, the group leaders taught them school songs, none of which are ever sung by any students. Later male members of the beanie crop had to meet the Sophs in a Tug of War, while the female Frosh cheered their heroes on to victory with a spirit that was superficial, but adequate. 12
