A GARDEN CITY COLLEGE BECOMES A UNIVERSITY With World War II, Military Reviews were common on Adelphi's cam- pus, as the college used its nursing program, itself a national first, to conduct a cadet nursing program. Return to peace brought further expansion and the return of men to campus. The year 1949 marked the beginning of the still present parking problem. Expansion brought additions in curriculum and facilities, but there was still a need for a library large enough to accommodate the growing stu- dent body. This year, 1963-1964, its first year as a university, Adelphi witnessed the official opening of the Swirbul Library, named in honor of Mr. Leon A. Swirbul, co-founder of the Grumman Aircraft Engineer- ing Corporation, which contributed most of the funds for its construc- tion. This beautiful and impressive structure marks the realization of one dream and the promise of others to come. As a university in its first year, Adelphi is just beginning to grow. Its present sixteen buildings will eventually become many more, with plans being made for a new men's dormitory, a Student Union Building, an Institute of Creative and Performing Arts, a classroom and business building, and an annex to the science and mathematics building. Stu- dent enrollment is also increasing, with the present 6,809 possibly reaching 10,000 by 1970. This continuous procession of firsts at Adelphi shows a spirit of progress in which we all have shared and from which we all can learn a lesson. As with Adelphi, our lives hove shown continuous growth, hers resulting in university status and ours in adulthood. Also as with Adelphi, our attainment of this new status must not be the signal for stagnation, but for further progress. For this realization, perhaps first in importance for us, we can only say thank you, Adelphi.

You Wished You Could Be At By Michael C. Luckman The day was history and Adelphi students were to be caught up in it. It was a bright Friday—Friday, November 22. Those with early classes haa already packed their books and left for a weekend at home. But most stu- dents had afternoon classes, and so they congregated in the snack bars over extended lunches, chatted in the parking lots or did whatever one does to pass time. Some students already were in their one o’clock classes. Some were awaiting their two o’clock classes. “The President of the United States has been cut down by an assassin’s bullet in Dallas,” said the announcer. “His condition is uncertain at the present time. We will keep you informed with bulletins as soon as we receive them. ” Then a shrill alarm sent a wave of shock from one end of the campus to the other. Suddenly radios and televisions magnetized our hearing and our seeing. Classes disbanded. Laughter ceased. An associate ran into my office and in a high pitched voice which cracked when he blurted out, “President Kennedy has been shot!” The dormitories knew. Then the students laughing in the snack bar knew. Then the administrators and teachers working in Levermore Hall knew. A hearse fell over the campus.
