ORACLE 1964 Adelphi University Garden City, Long Island New York, New York Being the editor of a college yearbook is a very great honor and also o grave responsi- bility. The editor is usually faced with the problem of capturing a whole year of college life and recording if forever within a bright cover. This year, however, the job was even more difficult. In 1963-4 many wonderful and important things have happened to Adelphi. This year and its yearbook are not the end of something, but rather the beginning of a new era on the Adelphi campus. Still, this year is the first year for many things. Consequently, the theme of the 1964 Oracle is Firsts. 1964 marks the first year of Adelphi's new University status. This event can be traced back to a small academy in Brooklyn. It has taken many years to make Adelphi Long Islands oldest liberal arts college and newest university. This first year has been a busy one for everyone here at Adelphi. The administration and the student body all were involved in the new status. It was a proud day when the word was announced that Adelphi had become a University. The 1964 Oracle attempts to highlight Adelphi's history from the academy days to the present. It hopes to recall the thrill that swept the campus when the news was released. Further it hopes to instill a true feeling of pride in Adelphi's rapid and prominent growth. 1964 also marks the first year of the Swirbul library's operation. The road toward com- pleting the library was a long and hard one. For a while if seemed that the Library might never open. Finally, in August, the doors were opened to the Adelphi community. It is a beautiful building which all students, faculty and administration of Adelphi should be proud. When reading through the 1964 Oracle, again, remember that this yearbook is not the lost, but rather the first. The 1964 Oracle must live on because what follows one, but two and three and an eternity. Creating the 1964 Oracle was a job which required the skill, talent, patience and oper- ation of many people. People like Alexis Vitali Benson, Joan Marchetti, Bruce Bardes, John Lewis, Jeff Seide, Liz Weiss and Lillian Haug were all indispensable. Also many thanks to Michael Luckman and Mary Richardson for their valuable aid. Finally, special thanks to Phil St. Pierre of American Yearbook and Aaron Jarret and Bernie Friedman of Carol Studios, without whose help the dream of the 1964 Oracle would not have become a reality.
