W'e CD edi cate The Junior Class gratefully dedicates the 1951 Oracle to Or. Chester Leonard Barrows, educator and friend. Dr. Barrows came to Adelphi College in 1926 and for the past 16 years has been chairman of the History Department. In his book, “Fiftx Years of Adelphi College, he has captured the evo- lution of our ideas, the building of college traditions, and the vividness of college personalities. The typical student views Dr. Barrows as a pal: a teacher who knows and treats students as people. Skillfully, the important is sifted from the trivial, and with lectures geared to the future, the deeds of men and machines take on added vigor. We will never forget having searched the horizons with Cap- tain Drake for Spanish ships, or having sat beside American statesmen at conference tables; that in the magic of it all. writing lecture notes were completely forgotten. In teaching. Dr. Barrows finds a primary source of personal satisfaction. As a philosopher, he nur- tures the growing student with provocative material, stimulating him to follow his personal interests and to apply his added knowledge to the world about him. Our sinccrcst wishes to Dr. Barrows for con tinned happiness and leadership at Adelphi. May he inspire us to develop empathy for others and to uphold our convictions. 12
