THE SENIOR CLASS OF ADAIR COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL COLUMBIA KENTUCKY PRESENTS THE CHIEFTAIN 1958 We of THE CHIEFTAIN staff who are about to depart as graduates of 1958 sincerely hope that in future years this issue of THE CHIEFTAIN will be a cherished memento of happy years at Adair County High School; a reminder of favorite classmates and of the wonderful hours out- side the classroom. Annual Staff Sessions -- The Arrow — Senior Play -- Locker Assignments — Class Night Program -- Banquets -- Basketball Victories -- Ag Trips -- Soliciting Ads -- Chapel Programs — Getting Diplomas — the many other events that made our high school days fly fast on the wings of time. For most of us, we have been students here four years. And now, though hesitantly, we must leave by the open door and step out confidently to face a future that is very uncertain. But in whatever degree of success or failure we may find ourselves in years to come, if a glance at these pages will lighten our labors and ease our pains — if only for a moment — we deem 3 our yearbook work worth-while. We, the class of 1958, with all pride and sincerity, hereby dedicate this edition of THE CHIEFTAIN to our sponsors, Mr. Marion Collins, Miss Mary Lucy Lowe, Mr. Fred Troutman, and Mrs. Vevia Walker, whose sacrifice, guidance, and toil have enabled us to attain our first pinnacle of success. As you turn the pages of this yearbook, we hope it brings to mind the many pleasant mem- ories of our past years at schooL BROOKS COOMER Principal JACKIE KEEN Secretary FACULTY MARION COLLINS MISS MARY LUCY LOWE FRED W. Seniors! We can hardly believe ourselves when we think of this being our last year of high school. We are the purely proud and dignified seniors that started our Freshman year on August 30, 1954- all 210 of us-with the election of Darrell Young as our president. Our Homeroom teachers, Miss Russell, Mr. Woody, Mrs. Hutchinson, Mrs. Bell, and Mis. Walker, helped us to struggle through our Freshman year and encouraged 159 of us to return the next fall as Sophomores. During our Sophomore year many things happened. Our representative to the Jamboree was Joan Cole, escorted by Roger Pickett, who became Miss Adair County High School. The Sophomore and Juniors had a contest with a magazine publishing company. We were proud to have the highest salesman, Martha Sue Collins, in our class. The next year 142 of us turned Juniors. We juniors have many in various clubs and activities. Juanita and Loreta Ballou were chosen to lead the cheers for the boys as they made their points at the games. Again we sold magazines for the same magazine company. This was the year we had to feed the Sen- iore, at our Junior-Senior Banquet, but we had fun feeding them. After the banquet we had a short program which everyone enjoyed. And now we are Seniors! Only 112 have stuck with it to finish high school. We are looking forward in the spring to our Junior-Senior Banquet when we will be the ones to get fed, our Baccalaureate Ser- vices, Class night, and most of all, yet the saddest.............GRADUATION. 12 EMMA FLORENCE ATWOOD Emmy Lou Own Liberty Jailhouse MILTON EDWARD BAKER Stork Barber EARL DAVIS BRADSHAW Pearly Build a hot rod JOYCE LOUISE BROWN Jo-Sa To be Happy’s girl DORTHY VERNELL BROCKMAN Dot To be a cow doctor BETTY ANN BRUTON Babs Be a designer JANET GRACE CARNEY Wyno Keep my poise IRVIN RAY CLAYWELL Dude Go steady DONALD EUGENE BUTLER JANET GAIL CABBELL Doc Jan Mayor of Cane Valley Teacher BARBARA JEAN CHAPMAN Barbie Always be happy! The first week we lost a few and gained a few, leaving it at the end of the first six-week period the number we started with. We hope to engage in some activities before the year closes. We have not had a chance to prove our- selves, mostly because we started into high school with fear and trembling, but we urge you to move over and watch us go. We were proud of Patty Rowe and Linda Kell, who were selected as our cheerleaders. We will do our best in giving them our enthusiastic support. 48 Bill Aaron Dean Akin Shirley Allen Carol Arnold Doris Bailey Judie Bailey John Ballou Ronald Barger Clifford Barnett Ronald Barnett Phillip Bean Jimmie Bennett Jimmie Bennett Fred Blair Jimmy Bledsoe Cs f ' r • r M.
