Everyone enioys the great music. SADIE HAWKINS GOES HAWAIIAN This year the Sadie Hawkins Dance was held on January 10, 1985. The Seniors had a new theme for the dance and went Hawaiian! The dance was held in the Multi-Purpose Room with sounds from the System and decoration straight from Old MacDonalds farm. Attendance was not limited to couples. The shyer girls could go with friends and hope to meet the man of their dreams. Many of the slow dances were fittingly, ladies choice, but the guys had a chance to make their preferences known, as well. On the whole, everyone who attended had a wonderful time. Ada's West Side Story is a musical tale about kids of the street, rumbles, teen-age love, the outer and inner limits of city turfs, realism social significance and a segment of American life — young people set in a time and place with none of them understanding what's happening to them. West Side Story is all that and more. A modern-day version of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet that does not paraphrase the Elizabethan account, but rather utilizes it as a reference point. The atmosphere is stark, the ending tragic, but it has romance, humor, dance sequences and a collaboration that represents, spectacularly, the lively art of the American musical theater. The show opened Friday, April 11 at 8 p.m. and continued Saturday, April 12, at the same time. The costumes and the stage setting were designed by the directors, Lynn Knoble and Dean McDowell. The costumes used in West Side Story were designed by Mrs. Knoble. She researched the story itself set in the late 1950's, studied Action (Kevin) and Anybodys (LeAnn) discuss her loyalty. Middle: The Jets make their plans. West Side books showing styles of the times, and viewed pictures from West Side Story performed on Broadway in 1957, fhe remake of 1980, and the 1962 movie version. Costumes were found in attics of cast members and their families. Some came from the Music department collection made over the past eight years. Period costumes, such as the '50's-style prom dresses, were rented. The stage setting for West Side Story is the creation of teacher Dean McDowell. He designed the entire set. His ideas came, he said, from seeing different productions of the musical and looking at pictures from other productions. McDowell said, I had to adapt ideas to fit our small stage area. Mr. McDowell designed two revolving turntables. They were built on stage and revolved to make a scene change. He added, They open up so they can be used three ways — inside, front side and back side. Mr. McDowell planned the lighting design, coordinating the colors and making the decisions when and where to use light. Story The 16-piece orchestra plays an important role in the musical. Director Dean McDowell said, West Side Story is known in the theatrical world as one of the most difficult musical scores written for a Broadway-type musical. Because of the difficulty, professional musicians from Lima Symphony, Ohio Northern University, Bluffton College and Bluffton High School were added to Ada High School instrumentalists.
