Scurrying down the street One mature June day, I heard a tune. The beautiful, happy, continuing, tune of the merry-go-round. As I listened, f m e began to piece themselves together In my mind’s eye: A red balloon held tightly, by a little girl; (wondering) how it floats. (?) Popcorn and candied-apple smells, and that same little girl; (anticipating) The taste of popcorn and candied-apples. Rainbow-colored clowns, making jokes, out of the smiple mistakes, in (life). That little girl, (laughing), Seeing herself, in the clowns ’ doings POP!! (crying) The little girl runs, (somewhere); with a string, In her clutched hand. Then, she stops, smiles, (looks), at the string: (remembers), How the balloon did look. Now, each time she (sees) a string, she (remembers): Her red balloon, Popcorn and candied-apple smells, And rainbow-colored clowns. Just as when, She hears merry-go-round music, She thinks of those, (childhood) days. Not lost, but always, In her. . . (mind’s eye). Carolyn Harunkiewicz 139
