English is a dynamic, living, growing language. Because methods of communication change, because speaking and writing manners change, and because the English language itself changes, the teaching of English is both fascinating and challenging. The English department, in order to help students better understand and appreciate our language, offered a program which included basic grammar, literature, and composition skills. Not only competency but needed job and college preparatory skills were taught. Teachers encouraged vocabulary study to raise the verbal scores on the Scholastic Aptitude Test, they also worked with students to raise competency test scores. The department held as its philosophy that the manisfestations of these skills comes from within, therefore, knowledge can best be gained through self-discovery.
