I Ili lll'll.l'lN HENRY The Academy of Richmond Vountr, the oldest academy in Georgia, was chartered by the Georgia legisdaturi- in 17835 however, the Academy was not opened until April Ill, 1755, with William Rogers ot' Maryland an teach- er. 'l'he Academy was under the direction of the Trustees uf Richmond Academy who also laid out the town, numbered the Iota, named the alreetx, built the church, elected the rector, chose the Academy teacher, bought the books and prescribed the courm- of studleag also the Trustees regulated the cemetery, choae the aexton, and many other items of civic atiairn. With funds from the sale of public lands, the Trustees bought two houses on Bay Street betwen Third and Fourth atreeta for the Academy. The pupila were divided into three classes: the first was taught reading, writing, and apellingg the second, English grammar and cypheringg the third, l.atin Greek, and mathematics. The Trus- tees charged tuition, and they con- tltttletl lo do no until 1910. Augusta wan a aniall frontier town, and the school grew alowly.
