NE TO NG I LD IE Y ETH CHANG RDER O LD O E TH AS is 5 A Academy Oi Our Lady Of The Sacred Heart The Academy of Our Lady through nine- ty-four years has seen old doors close as new ones opened to meet the growth of existing times. ln l863 Bishop Duggan of Chicago brought seven Sisters of Saint Io- seph to Peoria. Father Abram Ryan, famed poet of the S-outh, was then pastor of Saint Mary's Church. The first convent was a two room house l-ocated on the corner of lef- ferson and Hancock. Soon the house called King's Place, near the corner of Madison and Hamilton, was acquired. A third move was made to a convent on the corner of Iefferson and Fayette Streets. The school grew and the Academy of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart was erected on the corner of Madison and Bryan. ln l87l one gra- duate, Anna McKenzie of Pekin, was the first to open the doors to the long line of girls who have claimed the Academy as their alma mater. g After the erection of the see of Peoria in l877, both the Academy of Our Lady and Spalding lnstitute enjoyed the patron- 4 age and active interest of the illustrious Bishop Spalding. God reveals Himself in mariyfwaysf' The first in a long line of academy girls who gave themselves to god in religious communities was Susan Crowley, Sister Ter- esa Louise, C.S.I. History records of her: Even as a school girl, Sister Teresa gave promise of the talent which she later de- veloped as a prolific writer of good prose and exquisite verse. , As we read on we smile, for we realize that the old order changethf' A report card then was called a Monthly Bulletin and the curriculum listed such subjects as: Physical Geography, Natural Philosophy, Astronomy, Written and Intellectual Arith- metic, and Fancy Work. On an old gradu- ation program we learn that the young ladies danced the Bose Bud Polka. This year we saw the doors of the Old Academy closed for ever. To meet new expansion needs, the old landmark in Peo- ria was razed, and in its place will be erected a new faculty convent.
