October 10, 1958 will long remain a sadly significant date in the lives of the youth of today. On that day the young people of the world lost a Friend. On that day,Pope Pius XII.Suprême Pontiff of the Catholic Church.was calledbefore the throne of God. His nineteen years in the papal chair had been full years. years replete with labor and love and holiness. His death shocked and saddened the entire world and snatched from todays teeners the only Pope they had ever known and loved as a father and friend. O God. grant him eternal rest and let perpétuai light shine upon him.

ion •t ' In 1859, on October 6, the School Sisters of Notre Dame, from Milwaukee, Wis¬ consin, opened to seventy-five girls, the doors of the Institute of the Immaculate Con¬ ception, located at Third and Harrison Streeis, in Belleville, Illinois. Between that happy day in October and today are strung one hundred golden years of loving service to the young girls of the Diocèses of Alton and Belleville and the neighboring archdiocese and diocese. These years are replete with joys and successes, disappointments and failures, hopes and plans. The struggle has been constant, finances often inadéquate, disasters not lacking, but the blessing of God has been perpétuai, success encouraging, and results rewarding. Notre Dame’s Centennial Memories of 1959” is dedicated to the hundreds of cap¬ able young women who hâve gone forth from her protecting halls to take their places in the work of the world as nurses, nuns, teachers, secretaries, joumalists, pharmacists, medical technicians, and a h ost of vocations too numerous to mention; to the splendid wives and mothers, faithful to God and to home and family; ail of them women who hâve held aloft the torch of virtue and knowledge, and hâve lived out the principles of truth and fidelity instilled into their young hearts by the daughters of Our Lady, the School Sisters of Notre Dame. To these, and to the nuns who gave of their best, their lives and their energies to teach and train the young, our yearbook of the centenary is fittingly dedicated. AD MULTOS ANNOS! 5
