She IS the glrl from Austr1a Everywhere I went ln A M I they whxspered thxs the Slsters as well as the gxrls I was not supposed to hear lt but I could not help lt But that was only ln the be glnnlng Now everybody knows me and I am an A M I glrl just llke all the others Stlll there are many that do not really know how I happened to come all the way from Austrla to Texas And th1s IS what I am go1ng to tell you here A blt more than a year ago I was a llttle student 1n a llttle school ln a lxttle town Ihad lots of frlends lots of fun but llttle excltement untll I heard about the scholarshlps to Amerlca They were based on an exchange of students between Austrxa and the Unlted States and allowed the wlnners to l1ve for a full year wlth an Amerncan fam1ly hke thelr own chxld, and to study at an Amerlcan hlgh school Darlngly I applled for It never even dream1ng that I mlght be one of the lucky wlnners Oulte some txme after I had fllled out the flrst applrcatxon blanks and sent a currlculum to the Ex change Offmce xn Vlenna I was summoned to Vlenna for a httle examlnatxon It really was no exam just a conversatlon about myself my lnterests and ablhtles Th1s was the flrst real step to Amerxca Then came a long per1od of waxtlng, fllllng out further blanks, and walttng agaln In June I had the greatest surprlse of my Ixfetlme It was a letter that told me that I and Z9 other young Austrxans had been selected from a crowd of 600 to represent Austrla ln the States' Then lt went fast, passport tram tlcket shlp txcket And off we went leavmg behmd all our loved ones and our country but looklng forward to thls so promxsxng year The tmp was wonderful' Sw1tzer land, France Parts the Queen Mary New York St I..ou1s and then Texas' You know the rest Eva Marla Stemer Nga'-.R , T I xt J ,, . . . , , . .
