Visiting at Welfare lsland produces happi- ness in both patients and students, as Joan Rice, Kathy Gartland, and Peggy Gartland find on one of their trips there. Felicia Marotti, Secretary, f and Peggy Gartland, President, make a last 1 minute check on packing the supplies, Starting its first full year as an SSO club, YCS was divided into two discussion groups which met on Monday and Thursday. YCS-ers used the ob- serve-judge technique at weekly meetings to view problems in an effort to eliminate them. Much em- phasis was placed on starting with problems which are closest to the girls. The main objective was to make immediate surroundings Christ-like. Transforming discussion into action, the mem- bers undertook several Catholic Action projects clur- ing the school year. A clothing drive spurred girls to bring in cartons of wearable clothing for the poorj Later, club members made their first trip to Welfare Island, visiting the sick and bringing them small gifts. First impressions were so strong that the girls returned several times. YCS also sponsored a drive for medical supplies for Appalachia-girls sought donations from doctors, pharmacists, and drug com- panies in an effort that ended in many cartons of medicals being shipped to poverty-stricken areas.
