EVERY GOAL YOU REACH IN LIFE IS A STEP AHEAD INTO THE FUTURE DEDICATION 1987 MARY MARGARET McCONNELL Albert Schweitzer once said One thins I know: the only ones amons you who will be really happy are those who will have sought and found how to serve. Mary Margret McConnell, Peg to her friends and cohorts, has certainly experi- enced many years of happiness. Currently, the Assistant Principal at Acad- emy H.S., Mrs. McConnell has served her family as the mother of six children, served her community as a good citizen and active member of her church, and served the School District of the City of Erie as educator. Peg received a BA in English from Villa Maria College, an M.A. in English from Gannon, and a Certification in Secondary School Administration from Edin- boro University. She has also attended classes at various other educational institutions and has traveled extensively. The trip she most remembers is her journey to the Gokhale Institute in India. Curriculum development work and her active participation as President of the Erie Education Association (1977-78) earned her recognition as the Alum- na of the Year award from Villa Maria College in 1984. She was also recog- nized by the P.T.A. in 1983 with a Lifetime membership. Peg has always been very highly respected by both her students and the professionals that she has guided and served over the years. She has been known for her ability to lead with courage and fairness. She will be missed by all. 3 Principal, Mr. Donald Zonno Assistant Principal, Mary McConnell Scheduling for the 1986-87 school year went smoothly and everyone settled in quickly under the administration of Donald Zonno as principal and Mary McConnell and Edward Grode as vice princi- pals. Our administration is very involved with the student body and faculty. They visit classrooms fre- quently, support extracurricular activities and sports, and occasionaly deal with student and teach- er problems. In doing all this, our administration works hard to satisfy the needs of everyone at Academy to the best of their ability. GUIDING OUR STEPS Assistant Principal, Mr. Edward Grode Charles Verdecchia, Dr. Helen Zimmerman, Ralph Barbaro Our Counselors, Ralph Barbaro, Charles Verdecchia and Dr. Helen Zimmerman, are here to help us make wise choices and decisions. The counselors are a source of information for us in planning our futures and solving our problems. Pam Coverdale, Shirley Butler, Debbie Sansone and Stanley Beard are our hardworking teacher's aides. Teacher aides play an important part in the daily affairs of the school by assisting teachers with classroom ac- tivities. Rita Donikowski, Jean Krahe, Lovetina Holman, as our secretaries, work along with our administrators to make our school as efficient as possible. We have spent the year studying hard to meet credit require- ments. Although we worked hard we also took the time to be with old friends and to welcome new faces. Each year the juniors try to set a good exam- ple for all underclassmen. As this year comes to a close, we realize the steps we must continue to take to become academi- cally successful. STEPPING INTO A Honor courses help students prepare for their future by developing skills in areas that will enhance their opportunities to meet the academic requirements for college. Academy offers honor courses in English, History, Earth Science, Biology, Chemistry, Algebra, and Geometry. Will the real Mr. Hayes please step forward? WORLD OF KNOWLEDGE Mr. Nawrocki weishs in. Advanced placement courses at Academy Hish School help students get a jump on col- lege. During their junior and senior years of high school, the students can receive college credits from Gannon University which can be transferred to most other colleges and universities. Academy offers Advanced Placement courses in Physics, Biology, En- glish, and Calculus. With this help, they can finish their degree in less than four years. A typical Academy locker. c u R R I C U L U M STEPPING INTO A Mr Lute explaines the fine points to our fu- ture musicians. Academy High School offers a wide variety of classes for students to choose from. Aca- demy's class variety helps relieve student doldrums . Besides Computer class and Or- chestra there are electives in Home Econom- ics, Wood Shop, Metal Shop, and Drafting. Students can advance their knowledge in everyday living by choosing electives. Why me? 88 WORLD OF EXCELLENCE Proud students receive their Academic Awards. Mr. Niebauer acts as advisor of our National Honor Society. Mr. Nawrocki awards Academy's finest stu- dents. The students who fill the above empty seats are our future leaders. Many students struggle to fulfill their dreams and reach their goals. Academy rewards those who strive for knowledge with our Academic Awards Assembly. Our teachers help us take the time to stop and consider the future. They motivate us now by their dedication and concern. We dedicate these pages to those who have succeeded and who continue in their quest for knowledge. 89 Our lives are filled with many choices. There's that certain step everyone must take. It could be a step to success or a step to failure. Now is the time for us to choose each of our steps carefully. Our choices and our steps either move us forward or back- ward. Throushout our high school days we take the time to reflect and seek the answers that will help us to step forward and step ahead. G P E T S D In life we have goals. Step by step we move towards our dreams, sometimes cautiously, sometimes boldly. When we reach our goals we move ahead. Something to strive for and something to move towards is what enriches our lives. Our goals and our dreams help bring us the joy of living. 91 INEXPERIENCE HURTS PERFORMANCES Front row-. J. The team finished the year under Coach Antonino Loverso, with a 2- 14 record. Their standings did them no justice considering their high cali- bre of play, especially in the first half of the season. The lions defense controlled most of their opponents with outstanding play by Goalie, Brenton Stouffer; Full backs, Paul Zimmer, Dave DeSante, Chris Majerik and Jason Kroh; and Halfbacks, Alex Sperry and Will Knox who were also offensive forces. This supplemental publication has become very popular at Acad- emy due to its interesting and timely articles. 139 The Happy Ad Box - Looking lonesome. The 1987 Academe Staff wants to pro- duce one of the best yearbooks in Academy history. A C A D E M E The beginning of the year started out pretty rough having to break in a new advisor and having to train many new staff members. But, after everyone settled down, things began to run smoothly, and we really began to work. Unfortunately, next year we will again be losing quite a few members of our staff and will be looking for new train- ees. So, if you are interested, don't be afraid to let us know. Chris Steffy wonders, Why me?” The staff takes time out to relax. WO John tries to raise Carol's spirits. Seniors take a minute to smile pretty. 141 VARSITY OF 86 Front Row: Lisa Mills, Sherita Coleman. Row 2. Jenny Burns, Rhonda Henderson. Row 3: Captain, Tiffany Henderson, Stephanie Crock- ett. Sparaga STEPPING INTO A WORLD OF EMPLOYMENT College is expensive; any of the seniors will tell you that. Due to this rising cost many upperclassmen have found that part-time employment can help one's bank account. Not only is a job a good source of income, it is also an excellent way to gain experience. Many small businesses are eager to hire teenagers and are very accomodating with the number of hours worked. For the seniors on this page graduation will mean college or continuing on with their jobs in the hope of advancement.
