Dedication 1985 Mrs. Bertha Blau. Assistant Principal A member of the teaching profession for over 35 years, Bertha Blau has always been proud of the profession and proud to be a part of it. Her educational background consists of Mercyhurst College (Bachelor's Degree), the University of Pittsburgh (Master’s Degree in administration and guidance). University of Miami in Florida. Edinboro University. Thiel College. Western Reserve, and Penn State. Mrs. Blau's teaching career included positions at Cranberry Township High School, Randolph Township High School. Meadville High School, Wilson Junior High School, and East High School. She taught English or math in these schools. She was appointed to her first administrative post as an assistant principal at East High School, then moved to Academy in 1968, where she served for 16 years. Always interested in her students and concerned about their families. Mrs. Blau continued that interest and concern for the faculty — their professional advancement and improvement and their relationships with their students. However dedicated she has been to the field of education. Bertha Blau's first love is music. Phil Spitalny’s All Girl Orchestra claimed her time and talents with the piano and saxophone before she entered teaching. She still delights in entertaining all with her ability as a pianist. Students will long remember those Holiday Concerts when she was called to the stage to play the piano and lead the assembly in a sing-a-long. Mrs. Blau has always been devoted to her family — her husband, two sons, and grandchildren — a devotion that was returned many times over. She has been a staunch supporter of her religious heritage. Professional groups in which she counted membership include Phi Delta Kappa. Erie Administrators Association. National Education Association. Pennsylvania State Education Association, American Association of University Women. B'rith Shalom Congregation, Sisterhood of the Erie Jewish Center, and Hadassah. Having friends and being a friend are important to her. We will always remember her hearty laughter and the twinkle in her eyes as she enjoyed a good joke. Her contributions to education and to the lives of her students will live on in the memory of the students, faculty, and friends who know her. 2-Dedication
