Assistant Principal A member of the teaching profession for over 35 years, Bertha Blau has always been proud of the profession and proud to be a part of it. Her educational background consists of Mercyhurst College (Bachelor's Degree), the University of Pittsburgh (Master’s Degree in administration and guidance). University of Miami in Florida. Edinboro University. Thiel College. Western Reserve, and Penn State. Mrs. Blau's teaching career included positions at Cranberry Township High School, Randolph Township High School. Meadville High School, Wilson Junior High School, and East High School. She taught English or math in these schools. She was appointed to her first administrative post as an assistant principal at East High School, then moved to Academy in 1968, where she served for 16 years. Always interested in her students and concerned about their families. Mrs. Blau continued that interest and concern for the faculty — their professional advancement and improvement and their relationships with their students. However dedicated she has been to the field of education. Bertha Blau's first love is music. Phil Spitalny’s All Girl Orchestra claimed her time and talents with the piano and saxophone before she entered teaching. She still delights in entertaining all with her ability as a pianist. Students will long remember those Holiday Concerts when she was called to the stage to play the piano and lead the assembly in a sing-a-long. Mrs. Blau has always been devoted to her family — her husband, two sons, and grandchildren — a devotion that was returned many times over. She has been a staunch supporter of her religious heritage. Professional groups in which she counted membership include Phi Delta Kappa. Erie Administrators Association. National Education Association. Pennsylvania State Education Association, American Association of University Women. B'rith Shalom Congregation, Sisterhood of the Erie Jewish Center, and Hadassah. Having friends and being a friend are important to her. We will always remember her hearty laughter and the twinkle in her eyes as she enjoyed a good joke. Her contributions to education and to the lives of her students will live on in the memory of the students, faculty, and friends who know her. 2-Dedication Thomas C. O’Rourke Superintendent P f Ns YlA Board of Directors Brenda A. Pundt President William G. Brabender Vice-President John C. Harkins John N. Petrus, D.P.M. Eva Tucker, Jr. ' GM ]IG-H - ACADEMY HOOL The theme for the 1985 Academe is Academy On Parade. Academy on Parade is also the name of the annual spring talent show at Academy High School. Like the show, the yearbook will present via photographs and copy the multi-talented students at Academy: a school with an Advanced Academic Placement Program that excellsj a school where there is an array of athletics and competitioni a school that is a melting pot of people who know how to relate to and respect each otheri a school that has teachers and students who care about each other and are involved in the community; a school that boasts parent involvement. In years to come as we think about our experiences we will remember Academy in our hearts. Theme 7 The students at Academy High School are honored to have a good faculty that works well with the student body. They teach the students how to set goals and to achieve them. The faculty often displays their pride in Academy. This school pride helps the students develop self-respect by showing respect. School pride also helps the students develop discipline by experiencing imposed discipline. Thanks, to the administration and faculty for making Academy a good place in which to learn. 8-Faculty Faculty-9 The Might of the Mighty Lions The 1984-1985 school year was off to a good start with Mr. Donald Zonno, in his third year as principal at Academy, and assistants Mrs. Mary McConnell, and Mr. Edward Grode all in control. As the year progressed these people proved to be indispensable as they dealt with students, teachers, and parents in the daily routine of school life. Along with this, they motivated school spirit in activities that have been in existence for years. They also gained student body support in new endeavors which were implemented this year. With much dedication to their jobs the adminis- tration and staff have proved the 1984-1985 year to be a number one year at a number one school! Sports-97 Girls’ Track Team Led by seniors Brookye Keys and Irvine Williams the Academy girls track team enjoyed their most successful season ever in 1984. The overall record was 6-O1 the Metro League record was 5-0. In the Metro meet. Academy scored 177 points to become the first undisputed cham- pions of the Metro League. Keys and Williams won four events each in the Metro meet to help clinch the championship after an undefeated season. The team also made an excellent showing at the District Meet, eleven girls qualified. The team set a total of seven new school records in 1984. Girls' Track-99 Academy Boys’ Track The Lions surprised a few teams last year as they finished with a 2-5 dual meet record. Victories over General McClane (96-45) and Strong Vincent (83-63) highlighted the 1984 season. The brightest moment for the Academy runners was the fact that they had representation at the PIAA state track meet. Sophomore Gary Myers qualified for the state competition in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes, while the 400 meter relay team of Derrick Thomas. Russell Conners. Kenny Johnson, and David Tate also ran for the Lions. Although Myers failed to place in the finals, the relay team captured a fifth place finish which was good enough to bring home coveted state medals. Other performers who did consistently well for the blue and gold were Jim and John Spaeder. winners of the Mr. Track award, and also Mike Steves. Mike Jenkins. Shannon Glover, Sean Horton, and Lonnie Mims. Since the Lions share of the Academy track team was comprised of underclassmen, the 1984-85 squad will improve and surprise a few more teams. With a lot of patience and practice, the Academy Lions hope to again become a contending team in the Metro League. Front - M. Martin, J. Marzka. S. Horton. T. Hess. A. Wayne. Row 2 - W. Davis. T. The Hilltoppers managed two wins against IT losses in a schedule that offered experienced and long time organized teams. Though inexperience and a small turnout were trouble spots for the team, a determined mixture of Seniors, Juniors, Sophomores, and Freshmen forced to play on the Varsity level held their own. Defensive Wizard Bob Ambrose and aggressive Les Davis. Holgar Kebernik, and Jimmy Lee held together a patchwork defense and aided goalies John Knox and Brent Stouffer. On the offensive end John Voltz and Tim Sabol led the scoring attack with some help from Jerry Fiske, Chris Sinnott, Mark Cornelia, and Alex Sperry. The team having struggled through the 1984 season there is still a question on whether soccer can make it in the public schools. Hopefully it will do better in the coming years. Amy Zimmerman. 146-Cheerleaders Cheerleader” - Just the word conjures up vision of pom-pom waving girls dressed in Academy blue and gold and leading our teams to victory through their energe- tic chants and cheers. The Cheerleaders of Academy are as much a part of the competitive spirit as the teams they represent. In the fall they cheer Varsity football, and in the Winter sport's season the varsity girls cheer for both men’s and women's varsity basketball and varsity wrestling. Being a cheerleader requires much hard work and dedication. Long hours are spent prepar- ing for tryouts, and once a girl has made the squad she must then be prepared to practice at least twice a week after school in addition to cheering at events and fir- ing us up” at Pep Rallies. More people than ever showed up to see the greatest talent in Erie. Among others, the hits of the show were: Thriller: the Ultimate Chill: the Sounds of Renee Ventres- ca: the Nasty Girls: the Paradise Playboys: and the Senior Girls Opening Act. With these insights in mind, we hope the 1984-85 show, under the direction of Mr. DiTullio, will be even more successful. On Parade 1 tl I Melvin strikes again, and again, and again, and againllll T.
