Louis DiBacco: United States History. Varsity Basketball coach. Mr. Carnicelli will be fondly remembered for the many ways in which he influenced and enriched our lives. He coupled a serious concern for our futures with an easy wit and subtle humor — attributes which lent themselves to the learning processes at work in his classroom and in other areas or our educational and personal contacts with him. Mr. C.” as he is affectionatly known loves to sing, and his beautiful baritone voice often added that additional touch of class to various school programs. May your retirement be that gentle walk of your favorite hymn, Mr. C.”, filled with many years of peace and contentment. Mr. DiBacco's teaching career spanned three decades. He taught at Lincoln Elementary School, Memorial Junior High and Academy High School. While at Academy he was an American history teacher and varsity basketball coach. Under his direction the Academy basketball teams were very successful, and they consistently achieved on a competitive level of which all could be proud. Many of his players went on to participate on a collegiate level, both locally and nationally. The 1974 team holds the distinction of being the first basketball team in Erie history to have an undefeated regular season. During his many years at Academy, Mr. DiBacco was highly respected, by teachers and students alike, for all of his efforts at our school. 2—Dedication Dedication Francis Major: Spanish I; II; Ilii IV. A graduate of Pennsylvania schools — Academy High School. Villa Maria College, and the University of Pittsburgh — Francis Major devoted her professional career to area students, most of it with those at this high school. Her classroom was a breath of the life in Spain and Mexico, with artifacts and pictures reflecting her travels in those countries. She delighted in sharing her experiences with her students, who took many trips via her slides and mementos and learned not only the language but also the culture of Spanish peoples. Teaching and enhancing the skills of her craft have been very important to this educator. But her life has had many facets: she has sponsored clubs, assisted in the office, developed curricula, worked in several professional associations to improve various aspects of education. Her years of teaching English as a second language to Hispanics have been rewarding. As a teacher, as a friend, as a sister, as an aunt, as a person, Frances Major has earned an A+ for her efforts. Her service to this community — and the memories of that service — will continue to be an inspiration to those who have known her in any of her various life roles. Evelyn Peterson: Acct. 1,2; Personal Typing: Notehand: Treasurer. Mrs. Peterson retired last year after spending 38 years as an educator. She came to Academy in I960 and spent the next 22 years teaching all phases of Business Education — typing, shorthand, office practice and accounting. Mrs. Peterson loved to teach. She felt that it was a most rewarding career, and worked very hard to instill in her students a pride in their work. She was a thorough and demanding teacher, and as a result, her students were well-prepared to enter the job market. Upon graduation the business community and her students were grateful for Mrs. Peterson's excellent teaching techniques. In addition to her academic tasks, she was a member of the faculty senate, the school treasurer and assisted the cheerleaders in their money-making efforts. We miss this excellent, dedicated and caring teacher. Dedication—3 Academy stands proud and forever will remain proud of its outstanding staff of educators. We as students, rarely ex- press our gratitude for all you’ve taught us in and out of the classrooms, but we are appreciative. You’ve been our leaders and we’re thankful to Aca- demy High School for - without you we never could have made it! Thanks ... 4—Faculty A Good Administration - A Good School The second year of Mr. Donald Zonno's administration showed that good people can mean everything, especially in a good school. Mr. Donald Zonno, Mrs. Bertha Blau and Mrs. Mary McConnell's duties are many and involve daily encounters with teachers, parents, and students. For it is the administrators who implement the programs, discipline students, and schedule the teachers and students to make sure that all goes smoothly. When dealing with over 1,100 students and 63 teachers this has to be a task of great magnitude. As the days, weeks, and months in a school year go by, the administrators oversee sports and extracurricular activities and deal with attendance, hearings, notices, truancy, rescheduling, substitute teachers, and evaluating teachers. All the while, they maintain a hand in PTA. public relations and the supervision of the school plant. At Academy, with all its variables all runs well. For, the administrators, secretaries, counselors, and teachers hold the school together through thick and thin and lead the student body on to be one of the best in Erie. Principal, Donald Zonno. The team also finished in the runner-up position in the Metro Track Meet and in the District Track Meet and participated in several invitational meets. One of these invitational meets included the well-known State College Invitational. Outstanding performers throughout the season were: Irvine Williams, a quadruple winner in the Metro. Sectional, and District meetsi Brookye Keys, a strong middle distance runnen Linda Conner, a long and triple jumper and consistently strong relay performed and Sue Watkins, a four year veteran in the throwing events. Six girls qualified for the State Track Meet at Shippensburg. The girls were: Irvine Williams, Brookye Keys. Linda Conner. Chanel Pulliam. Alice Thomas, and Tamara Doxey. These young men, Academy's future, will prove to be one of the best teams in the school’s history. The team consisted of five sophomores and 10 freshmen, all of which worked very hard to repre- sent their school. Their dedication made coaching them a pleasure, for they played as a team. In the four games that they lost, they only gave up a total of 17 points, and the ninth graders beat Prep at home - FIRST time in 87 games. Quite an accom- plishment!
