Supervising the completely new team was Coach Ronald Bailey. The tennis team was young with only one junior and four sophomores. All five girls did. however, receive letters. Unfortunate- ly. there weren't any senior girls who took interest in the team. Coach Bailey along with the returning team members hope that there will be more girls trying out for the 1980 season. harrierettes trip CROSS COUNTRY In their first year of competition the Academy Girls’ Cross Country Team finished the season with one win and three losses. Their one win was against Tech on September 25. Freshman Carla Worthen was the first girl from Academy to finish first in a dual meet, but this happened in a losing cause to East. The team does, although, show potential for a better season this year. Coached by Bill Anderson. Elaine Benson, and Gregg Swabb. the Girls’ Track Team had a record of 0-6. Outstanding team members were Mary Jaycox, twins Jean and Jill Wayne, and Vicki Hooks. They were undefeated in Metro Meets for the last two years. All four girls returned this year for the 1980 season. The coaches are hoping for girls with enthusiasm that can help bring the team successful coming years. Sophomore Terry Marlin glides gracefully over the hurdles in an upsetting meet against East High last spring.

cindermen lose pace With the opening of the newly renovated stadium, the Academy Boys' Track Team got its season under way. The team lacked depth but had some outstanding athletes. At the top of the list of significant performers was Ray Dickerson, who in the 800 meter race became the first Academy athlete in two decades to win a state championship. Also qualifying for the state meet was Dan Young who now holds the school record of 13 feet in the pole vault.
