Under the leadership of Director Frank Williams III and the drill instruction of the Beckwith Brothers. Academy's Marching Band dominated many competitions. Their most impressive performance was the Cassadaiga-Music-ln-Motion, where they took 8 trophies including Grand Champions. For the past two years Drum Major Todd Fox has made a distinctive mark in AFIS history. Fie has won every Drum Major award in the competitions in which he has participated. The Band started off the year with remarkable potential, and after long hours on the practice field and many hours of individual practice, the results were very rewarding. One group which can’t be overlooked is the Colorguard. In their second year of existence they have performed to expertise. AFIS Concert Band, which is formed from the Marching Band, also sparkled in many festivals and competitions. Yet another integral part of the Music Department is the Orchestra and Stage Band. The Stage Band added musical variety with selections from the jazz, blues, and pop fields. Performing in many out-of-state jazz festivals, the Stage Band ranked highly. This 1980 Academe is the sixtieth consecutive yearbook for Academy High School. The 80 staff received additional responsibilities this year for the first time: the Patron Fund Drive for the four Erie Public High Schools and the Business-Financial end of the Academe. The latter entails the subscriptions, bookkeeping, account- ing. publicity, bill-paying, and raising additional funds through the raffling of 1980 Academes and candy sales. Thus, the twenty-three members of the staff met during the fourth period and also spent many hours before and after school and during vacations in order to meet their deadlines. Many frustra tions and setbacks occurred; however, these were outweighed, in the long run. by the dedication, enthusiasm, congeniality, and comradery of this staff. The administration, many faculty members, and the custodial department deserve the Academe's gratitude for many considerations shown to the staff. The editors, section heads, bookkeepers, photo- graphers. typists, section members, artists, and the patrons' fund chief all contributed their varied talents to produce a quality yearbook. Senior editor-in-chief. Terry Peelman, deserves special recognition for his untiring service. The entire staff exemplified a fine group of students who combined hard work and fun into satisfaction. Have started here and now — To learn to care, to love and share Ourselves in all we do. The 1979-1980 school year began with a large enrollment of 486 freshmen, due mainly to the termination of the ninth grade at Twin Tech. We were shy at first, but after the first few weeks the feeling of not belonging began to disappear. We quickly assumed the roles we were destined to play. The upperclassmen and faculty helped to familiarize us with the building and to explain the computer- ized schedules, which were so new to us. As time passes, we will look forward to becoming sophomores, juniors, and seniors, adding to the glory of Academy in all the academics, activities, and sports. Id With our Freshman year behind us, we Sophomores look forward with great anticipation to becoming Seniors. We found ourselves getting more involved in extra-curricular activities which highlighted our second year in senior high. Gaining more seniority we still showed respect for upperclassmen but were happy to turn the tables and ridicule the freshmen. We began to realize we must accept the respon- sibility that came with our rank, as we moved up another rung on the ladder to 'S2. At the beginning of the year and throughout, we renewed previous year's acquaintances as well as making new ones. As we look back on our Sophomore year, we realized that what we said as Freshmen prevailed — This year brought happier memories to be had not only by us but by our best of friends.” Sharon Adams Jeffrey Adamaszek Anna Adrover Brian Alex Maureen Arndt Tonya Bailey Cynthia Baldi Mary Ballman Kimberly Banks sophomores Karen Bayer Lisa Bennett Ron Benton Rebecca Bihler I Jean Birk Lori Boback Annelle Bray Brian Alex demonstrates how lo focus the video tape camera to Amy Cohen and Trisha Hogan. Members of the class of 1981 returned to Academy In September proudly aware of their new status in school affairs. Being a member of the Junior class offered privileges not allotted to Sophomores, but it did not carry the responsibility associated with Senior membership either. Receiving class rings marked another step in the path to complete acceptance as Academy Lions. As in previous years, the all-Junior Prom Committee successful- ly planned the most important formal dance - the Junior-Senior Prom. Juniors looked toward the future through participation in college prep or vocational courses. Those planning to attend college took the PSAT, the College Entrance Examination Board tests, and the National Merit Scholar- ship Qualifying Test. They were also permitted to take Advanced Placement American History, a college level course. After eleven years of aspiration and hard work, class members are eager to assume school leadership in September of 1980.
