THE WORLD IN 1913 Nineteen-thirteen was the last year of the Gilded Era of Peace. People danced to the Blue Danube Waltz, Irene and Vernon Castle were introducing the Tango. and everyone was singing Alexander's Ragtime Band. World War 1 had not started yet- The world was unfamiliar with such names as: Hitler, Franklin Roosevelt, Hemingway, Mussolini, William Faulkner, Lenin. Hoover, Coolidge, Stalin, Nixon, Eisenhower, John Steinbeck, Mao. Franco, Khrushchev or Lindbergh. Woodrow Wilson ithe second Democrat since the Civil Warl stepped in as U. S- President. Jack London was the most popular novelist. People danced the Bunny Hug . People were scandalized by a painting, September Mom . Mexico was in the third year of its bloody Social Revolution. The last census showed Los Angeles had jumped to a population of over 300,000! L. A. was the seventeenth largest city in the U- S.!-People were beginning to pack the nickelodeons to see that funny Charley Chaplin in his two-reel comedies. California had more than two million people and was now the 12th largest state in the Union. On February 25, 1913 the first income tax became law, and the Federal Reserve System was created on December 23rd. Kaiser Wilhelm Il was Emperor of Germany. Czar Nicholas II ruled old Russia. Emperor Franz Josef sat on the throne of Austria-Hungary Italy and Spain were monarchies, and democracy was still considered a radical idea in much of the world. Los Angeles streets rang with the clip-clap of horses and the downtown section was a iangle of player piano music and scratchy gramophones - for radios and TV's had not been invented. This northeastern area was comparable to the Disneyland-Knott's Berry Farm section of today. Centered around Eastlake Park inow Lincoln Parkl was the World's Largest Alligator Farm and the World's Largest Ostrich Farm. The World's Largest Pigeon Farm was iust beside the North Broadway' Bridge until the great flood of 1913-1914 carried it away- Near North Broadway and Mission Road was SeIig's Zoo - the only real zco south of San Francisco. Many early movies were shot there- And just over the hill on North Broadway a brand new high school - Los Ang- eles' fourth was opened in September 1913. it was Abraham Lincoln High School.
