,iff- , if v EFQE E ff ABRAHAM LINCOLN HIGH -- 1913 Much has happened in the fifty year exis- tence of Abraham Lincoln High School. The spot which Lincoln High School now occu- pies was once part of the old pueblo land. lt was awarded to Dr. John S. Griffin in 1856 in appreciation of his services to the people of the pueblo, who had suffered an epidemic of small pox From Dr. Griffin, the land went to his ne- phew. Hancock Johnson: the German War- neick Brothers and finally to attorney W.W. Woolwine. Mr. Waolwine built o beautiful home on the site of what is now the Lincoln High Gym. Many years later, the land became the loca- tion of Abraham Lincoln High School, which was built due to the demand caused by a great in- crease in population. Students held classes on the lawn while buildings were being completed. Dr. Percy Andrus, an early principal of Lin- coln, spent a great deal of time and effort wor- king with community leaders to change the name of this district to Lincoln Heights and Eastlake Park to Lincoln Park. One high school lead to the organization of naming of a whole community! At the beginning of Lincoln's history, the school paper was called the Echo and the annual went by the name of the Orange and Black. As Lincoln progressed these names were changed to the RaiIsplitter and the Lin- colnian , respectively. These have been a very productive fifty years for Lincoln High School. Only time can foretell the future of the school in the next fifty years.
