G A B R I E L R . M A SON. principal. In the troubled world of today, there is much loud and heated discussion about government, economics, and war. Frequently our republic and our constitution are severely criticized and attacked by disgruntled leftists and rightists. To be sure, our form of democracy is riot |x?rfect. But the blessings it showers upon those who have the privilege ol living under its aegis are so many that all ol us should feel it our imperative duty to preserve the democracy which we have inherited Irom Washington. Jefferson, and Lincoln. his we can l est do by understanding the meaning of democracy—its genesis, its difficulties, its dangers, its benefits, its responsibilities, and its ideals. By studying our great historical documents and hv carefully reading such commentaries as John Bryce s 'The American Commonwealth. Charles Beards The Rise of American Civilization, and James I nislow Adams Epic of America, we shall have not only the necessary knowledge, but also the proper patriotic sentiments. Psychologically, these will lead to vigorous, courageous, and high-minded .action on our part in the support of our democracy. With stout hearts, we shall fight off our enemies, eliminate our existing deficiencies, and preserve our country as a blessed land of liberty and opportunity.
