The Essence of Democracy We students know already that our greatest defense against the enemies of democracy is the love of liberty and justice that has been instilled in our minds through the years of our education. We know that only by keeping our minds free from prejudice and narrowness can we preserve the es- sence of democracyg that by opening our hearts and minds and keeping them clear and liberal, we can help to preserve for ouselves and our fellow-men that individual freedom which our forefathers embodied in the Constitution. Since he has spent 22 of his 30 years of teaching at Abraham Lincoln, his greatest interest in lite has always been this school, its program, growth, and ideals.
