F rom l6 to 22 February the men and women of this lovely community went above and beyond to make the sailors feel at home and to ensure that everyone had a wonderful time. Two days of public tours welcomed guests to the ship including Rob Lowe, Kenny Loggins, Den- nis Miller, and former Secretary of State Warren Christopher. A reception at the Santa Barbara Yacht Club and a gala evenm hosted 8 by the Santa Barbara Navy League at Fess Parker s Double Tree resort xx ere highlights ofthe visit Additionally a softball tournament a d b n ar becue tor the crew were complemented by around the clock assistance ot the Veterans Memorial Center to any sailor who wanted a place to relax and spend some time with f riends When rough seas precluded public tours and the return of sailors to the shi the c t t p 1 y urned out in full toice to piox ide blankets and shelter to anyone in need ABRAHAM LINCOLN will fondly remember Santa Barbara and the manx ti iendsliips formed there

Following a challenging at-sea period, the crew settled into homeport once again to enjoy the holiday period witht their loved ones. Two generous leave periods allowed sailors to relax, to travel, and to catch up with friends and family prior to getting un- derway in mid-January. The highlight of the holiday season is always the Childrens' Christmas Party, and 1999 certainly was no exception. On a Sat- urday afternoon in mid-December, the Na- val Station Commons building was alive with activity as hundreds of children were enter- tained by arts and crafts stations face paint- ing and a special visit by Santa Claus him- se Probably the most exciting event for the little ones was the distribution of hun- dreds of toys that had been purchased by the command with each receiving a toy to take home as a rememberance of this very special day What a great way to start the holidays'
