R ntatives from the Afloat Training GTOUP iATGl Pacific bfmfded the eprese n - giant aircraft carrier shortly before its departure fmm Naval Statlon Everett 011,25 C b b We drills and to plan graded events during the Tailored Ships ggiiqiiiir fsgesssement or TSTA. For fourteen days, Sailors fought. simulated fires, patchedeimagmaly piling 1-nptures, exercised their medical skills in mass casualty drills, and trained in damage control. lMC-loudspeaker ann0unCementS alerted them to man overboard and prOpL1lSi0U Plant dfi11S mme than twenty types Of drills tested their responses to emergency situations. 0 By the time the Final Evaluation Period arrived on 16 November, repair teams were moving quickly and with a purpose. ATG instructors stepped back from their roles as hands-on instructors to become sharp-eyed inspectors, and noted that in several areas, ABRAHAM LINCOLN was the Hbest ship they'd ever seen. During this very important training, ABE celebrated two significant events -- its ten-year commissioning anniversary, and the thirty-year reunion of three former Apollo astronauts. Air Force Major General William Anders, Captain f'Dick', Gordon, and Dr. Harrison Schmitt, accompanied by Mrs. Nancy Conrad, wife of the late Pete Conrad, joined the ship for a truly memorable stay onboard the Navy's finest aircraft carrier. The ship's first milestone ofthe new millennium was completion ofthe Com- posite Training Unit Exercise, or COMPTUEX. Underway on 19 January, Abe proceeded to San Diego where she was joined by additional battle group ships to spend approximately three weeks off the coast under evaluation by Commander, Carrier Group One. Every aspect of the ship's training was observed, to include extended and complex air operations designed to stress and exercise all facets of the carrierfair wing team, intense damage control scenarios, and comprehensive aircraft loading exercises. D The final three days of COMPTUEX, an intermediate assessment phase serv- ing as a report cardt' to Third Fleet of the battle group's readiness to complete theupcoming Joint Task Force Exercise, reflected the wartime readiness of the entire ship. And once again, ABE and its crew came through with flying colors.
