i -llln-H, t tfwvexi ,t fum.-V Fleet Week San Francisco provided a wonderful opportunity for the people of San Francisco, Alameda, Oakland, and surrounding communi- ties to meet ABRAHAM LINCOLN Sailors, and for ABE sailors to receive the warm hospitality of these fine cities. An exciting and somewhat nostal- gic port visit--the carrier was formerly homeported at Naval Air Station Alameda prior to its arrival in Everett--began on 9 October as the Shlp sailed under the Golden Gate Bridge as the centerpiece of the parade Of ships Four da s f ' ' ' . y o activities, to include a Fleet Week Appreciation Night d. - . inner, a fun run, a reception onboard USS Essex, and a barbecue SpO11' sored by our own Lincol C ' ' n ommittee, left the crew excited to return. The highlight of the visit was the embark of approximately sixty-BVS members of the original ABRA ' ' HAM LINCOLN 1818Comm1ss1onmg COIUIUIYTGS, the majority of which traveled all the way from Illinois to make the transit north to Everett Re A ' . ar dmiral Bill Hayden fretj, the ship 'S HIST commanding officer, and his wife Kit delighted the crew with stories Offhe ship 's first days and conversel 1 Y, were overwhelmed with the changes that had taken place since 1989--in particular, wom en onboard and e-mail!
