Following a highly successful 1998 Western Pacific deployment, the ship proceeded to the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington for a SIX-lT1OH'Eh Planned Incremental Availability, or PIA. From April to September the shipyardlAbraham Lincoln team Worked increased air conditioning capacity, installation of diligently on projects to include an a metal and glass shredder system, replacement of Jet Blast Deflector F our, berthing upgrades, and the in- stallation of a mezzanine fitness facility. All projects were completed on time, and the ship departed the shipyard two Weeks ahead of schedule. A comprehensive commuting plan -- the largest ever undertaken by the Navy -- ensured that approximately 1,000 sailors per day reached the shipyard on time from various communities in the Puget Sound region. The ship Worked closely with Washington State bus lines and ferries to ensure the success of this signifi- cant project. Some sailors used the commute to study, others to catch up with shipmates, and others to sleep -- but all enjoyed the three-day Weekends the command provided in com en t' P sa ion for the many hours spent on the road.
